A few answers ...

Posted by Phillip Marshall, The Huntsville Times September 11, 2007 9:48 AM

Is it really only Tuesday?

It seems like it's been a lot more than three days since I left the Jordan-Hare Stadium press box at almost 2 a.m. Sunday. I could have spent just about all that time answering emails and comments on this blog.

Here are a few answers to questions asked multiple times:

Tommy Tuberville and Al Borges are not feuding.

Brandon Cox has not had a flareup of his illness.

Auburn's defense is not mad at the offense.

Auburn's seniors did not request a meeting with Tuberville last Sunday. Tuberville meets with the seniors every Sunday during the season.

Tuberville believed the right thing to do at the end of the regulation against South Florida was let the final 20 seconds run out and play overtime. He still believes that. He says it did not reflect a lack of confidence in Cox or the offense.

According to Auburn's coaches, the reason there is not as much shifting and motion as there was in 2004 is that it would not be of any value against the defensive alignments they have seen.

Auburn coaches believe South Florida was a better team than Kansas State, particularly on defense.

There is still no word on the status of suspended tailback Brad Lester. Tuberville will, no doubt, be asked about it again today at his weekly press conference.

I am not sure that I believe the one about going to OT, but he would never admit that he lacked the confidence in the 'O' anyway

Here is a few answers I'd like to see.....

Kodi Burns will be worked into the QB rotation over the next two games and will probably be the lone starter by the Florida game.

Brandon Cox will be fitted for a personalize clipboard during the same span of time.

I heard on one of the other sites that Burns would be red-shirted.

Burns, Caudle, Field, ANYONE...... PLEASE!

There is no way in hell that any of them would have a more horrendous game than Cox on Sat.

It's worth a shot. If all else fails, go back to Cox. He will be more graceful than ever to keep his job. But if Tuberville keeps failing to make a change, and we struggle against MSU, we will lose to Florida in a couple weeks. 2-2

I've heard the same thing. I think Tubberville would rather make butt love with a hairy trucker than play a freshman as long as there is anyone else available no matter if they have a clue as to what there doing or not. I'm seeing more and more true freshmen getting playing time and making a difference in their teams wile we redshirt just about every freshman in sight.

This was a Joke right?

Lee Ziemba
Wes Byrum
Bo Harris
Ryan Pugh
Chaz Ramsey
Chris Slaughter
Patrick Tatum
Mike Mcneil

They are all true freshmen and are listed on the depth chart, do you want me to list the redshirt Freshmen we have?

First, yes it was a joke. Second, did you see the part where I said "as long as there is anyone else available"?

Ok, sorry, I must have missed that part.

Here is something interesting:

Auburn standing by struggling Cox, but Burns might see action

By JOHN ZENOR
The Associated Press

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville didn't even wait for the question to be asked before providing the emphatic answer.

Who's the starting quarterback? Brandon Cox, the same guy it has been for the last two seasons. But, Tuberville hopes, not necessarily the same guy who has thrown four interceptions in the Tigers' first two games and been abused by not only defenders but media and fans.

"I know Brandon Cox has taken a lot of heat," Tuberville said Tuesday at his weekly news conference. "Brandon Cox is our quarterback. He will be our quarterback."

But the Tigers might take other steps to spark an offense that has given up a league-high seven sacks and committed five turnovers in an overtime loss to South Florida, leading up to Saturday's game against Mississippi State.

The changes might even include implementing a package to utilize athletic freshman quarterback Kodi Burns, giving opposing defenses a different look like Florida did last season with Tim Tebow and Chris Leak.

"They're trying to give him the same treatment Florida gave Tebow last year, trying to put him in and run a couple of draws here and there or whatever," said Robert Dunn, who is expected to replace Prechae Rodriguez as a starting outside receiver.

For more details, he said, "Y'all are just going to have to come out Saturday to see what's going on."

The speedy, strong-armed Burns definitely would be a changeup from Cox, a pocket passer with little mobility.

Cox's teammates spoke out strongly on behalf of their senior quarterback, but they're also intrigued by what Burns might be able to do.

"You've got to realize Kodi's a true freshman," defensive end Quentin Groves said. "You can't take a fifth-year senior and replace him with a true freshman. It's just not going to work.

"Kodi's never been in a real game. Brandon's been battle-tested plenty of times. You can't make up for experience with athletic ability. I think that's what a lot of people are trying to do."

But he also praised Burns' speed and quickness and his "cannon" right arm. Groves recalled a fall scrimmage when Burns pulled up and "threw almost an 80-yard bomb."

Tuberville, who wasn't asked about Burns Tuesday, indicated earlier that just putting in a quarterback to run doesn't necessarily solve the problems opposing defenses are creating for the Tigers.

"The way people are playing us we've got to throw the ball," Tuberville said Sunday. "And Kodi being there is not going to get them off of us. Kodi doesn't know the passing game as well as Brandon. His elusiveness will probably help a little bit. But you're still going to have to throw it most of the time. They are not going to sit back and give you an opportunity to run it, either.

"If a couple of more games go by, Kodi will be looking at redshirting for sure."

No. 2 quarterback Blake Field said he is "not at liberty to say" how coaches were working the passers in practice Tuesday.

Cox was picked off twice and lost a fumble against South Florida. He was off-target on a couple of plays that could have been touchdowns, but also had receivers drop some accurate passes.

Cox said he has done his best to ignore the criticism of his performance.

But he said offensive coordinator Al Borges told him he is "putting too much pressure on myself when I just need to do what I've been doing and just distribute the ball where I need to and keep us out of bad situations. Just get the ball to the guys that make the plays."

Borges said he's not about to replace Cox at this point. The fifth-year senior is 20-6 as a starter, after all.

"I just think that's such an easy out, to bail on your starting quarterback when things aren't going very well," Borges said. "That's what everybody wants. Everybody blames the starting quarterback. The backup's the fans' best friend.

"But until you think he's lost his confidence or he's just totally non-productive, then you've got to consider that. You won't beat your head against the wall. But I haven't reached that point yet."
