montgomeryadvertiser.com*::* COMMENTARY: Offensive woes finally caught up with Tigers (http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070909/SPORTS/709090326/1001)

The defense desereved a grade of A+. The offense should be academically ineligible! :brick:

In a word....yes. In several words...should have done it last week.

I have always had faith in Cox and have said that he doesnt get enough credit..give the kid more than 2 seconds to throw and he is usually very accurate,,he is also the current winningest SEC QB at I think 20-6....BUT after that, lets just say performance, (cause it wasnt football), I think just maybe it might be time to reconsider...that was one of the absolute worst games that he has looked:brick:

Cox isn't the winningest SEC QB because of his performances, but because of the team surrounding him. He only threw for 14 TDs with 9 picks last season, which isn't too stellar. If Auburn doesn't blowout Missisissippi State next week, then I just don't know what to say about this team. With game at Florida, at Arkansas, at LSU, and at UGA, this could be a very long season for Tiger fans.

Don't we already have one of these? "Brandon Cox Needs To Ride the Pine"

Honestly I think we might have been better off benching him. Even though he threw a very few good ones, I still cringed every time he touched the ball last night.

Brandon was less than perfect last night (one way to put it) but the loss to USF was a team effort. Too many fumbles late in the game, not to mention burning almost a minute of regulation with 2 timeouts left along with the Defense letting them run that fake handoff QB keeper over and over and over makes me believe that some folks want to use Cox as a scapegoat or something. I personally dont think benching Cox will do anything to help the rest of the season, matter of a fact, it may end up making it worse. Just my 2 cents.

I'm out of the country and did not get to catch the game, nor did I see much of their opener, since most of it was at the same time as our game, so I haven't seen Cox this year. Has his performance really been bad? I know the stats didn't look great, but sometimes that doesn't tell the whole story

I still don't know why Tuberville didn't try to get into field goal range with 35 seconds and 2 timeouts left. To me, that was probably the dumbest piece of coaching in a while, especially with how Wes was kicking last night.

Cox was 16 for 35 with 2 interceptions and a fumble. He even had time to through the ball last night! He needs to sit down

Don't knock the defense. They held up for the entire second half wile USF kept getting christmas gifts left to them on our side of the field. I don't think I've ever seen a defense put in a worse situation last night time after time and still hold up like they did. They played their guts out. I can even forgive Fannin for his two fumbles. The first was knocked out by a USF defender and wile the second was just his fault. However this was his first game so I can write that off as freshman mistakes. Other than the two brain farts he did his job time and again. At this time last week we were saying that the line would not block, the runners could not run and the QB could not throw. Well now we can say the offensive line can and did block,(1 sack all night I think), the runners can run (100 yards & two TD's in the first half). But the one thing we can't say is the QB can throw or even manage the game. Several times last night he either just threw it up for grabs even when there wasn't much pressure or he threw into coverage. Cox should be one of the top SEC QB's right now because he is one of the most veteran QB's in the conference. However right now he looks like he's the fresman 3rd. string @ a Div. III team. Time for him to go take his place on the bench.

Thats cool, bench him, not like my opinions matter anyway, but Cox wasnt the only person that contributed to the loss.......thats all im saying.

Sorry Shk. Didn't mean that to sound testy towards you. I do understand that there were others that made mistakes in the game. That happens in every game. What I'm sick about is that in every area other than Cox, Auburn looked like a different team than when they played Kansas State. The offensive line was 100% better. We had a real running game with Fannin and Tate did much better as well. The kicking game was sound. The defense held up their end and more. Everyone improved except Cox. If anything he looked worse than last week. I've pulled for him and defended him but now it is time to face the fact that he has lost whatever he had back in 05.

Its all good 73, believe me, Bama fans know what you are talking about (see Ken Darby/Jimmy Johns 2006), but benching your 5th yr senior QB is one hell of a rough decision to make (IMO). Im not trying to knock the D either, I know they had their back against the wall alot last night, but even you know the play I was talking about never should have worked more than once, much less maybe 6 or 7 times, with the experience you guys have this year. As for Tubby choosing to run out the clock, who knows till you walk in his shoes, the night Cox was having, an interception on your side of the 50 was a definate possibility, damned if you do or dont I guess, so maybe Tubby deserves a pass on that one. I will say this though, if you are gonna bench Cox, no better time than the present, cause Miss is one of the best options you guys have to break in a new guy. From what I understand, other than Cox and a true freshman (Burns), you guys dont have many options but if it was me, I think I would keep Cox, play a slower paced conservative kind of ball game, limit him to 15yrd or less passing, maybe air it out randomly (just to keep the D honest) but for the most part I would put my faith in my O-line and a descent running game. Not that I think this will win you the SEC, but it might win some games you are supposed to and save you a little face around the conference, call it damage control. Then again, like I have said before, WTH do I know anyway? Later

I have been standing behind Cox for a while and I still think he has been a great QB for Auburn. Against USF I just dont know what he was thinking sometimes. It's hard for me to agree that we need to pull the Senior, and I still dont think we need to play Burns yet, but if Brandon comes out and dont show something soon in the MSU game then maybe we should give Fields a chance.

not sure whats wrong with him..........watch him though, he looks at his first two rcvrs on a play and theyre not open he panics and runs into his OL and falls down...........I don't know if him getting his jock knocked so often in the last two years is having a residual effect on him or not.........he needs to continue to start but they need in practice and then in games to start working a backup in

The next two games are key. Miss State & New Mexico State are good opportunities to get Kodi Burns or Blake Fields some reps and see what they can do. Look at Florida last year. They got Tebow in just about every game and now that is paying off. Even though this is his first year as the starter, he is producing results. Kodi burns is supposed to be the future for Auburn so let's see what he can do. It can't be any worse than what we've seen so far. At least he isn't helpless to get away from pressure. If half of what is being said about him is true then he could turn things around down there. I'm not saying he'll lead us to Atlanta or anything but he can't be worse than Cox has been.

I don't think they should bench him, but they should use Kodi Burns much in the way Florida used Tebow. Bring him in for some runs and then surprise them with a good TD pass. Let Cox start, but bring in Burns for an element of surprise for a few plays in the games

I respect what he has done at Auburn in his career. But without a running game (Brad Lester), he is absolutely worthless. I thought this was proven years ago to be honest (the GT game). Yes, we need to bench his sorry ass. This is totally inexcusable.

That's a great idea. But Kodi isn't the power runner that Tebow is. He's a quick and elusive freshman kid with a strong arm. Perhaps they should bring him in on third and long situations? THINK OF SOMETHING TUBERVILLE. Conservative moron.

"What do I think about Brandon? I think he's 20-5. That's what I think."
Tommy Tuberville

Yeah, but that unfortunately doesn't mean a thing when you don't have a running game. What do you say we just abandon the QB position and run Fannin 90 times a game? That would sure fix the stupid problem...
