I'm a Sox fan, so the Yanks sweeping them this week isn't exactly the highlight of my week. But I'm thinking it was worth it simply to get this story headline from ESPN: The Worldwide Leader In Sports (http://www.espn.com) (currently, as of 5:30pm EST, seen by scrolling down on the main page to see the list of top stories on the right):
Yankees wave magic Wang and sweep Red Sox.
Is there any other way to interpret that? Are the editors taking a long lunch while the college interns run the site? I don't know how that made it through, but I'm so very glad it did.
*EDIT* Well they've taken the headline down, but it was up for about an hour I believe.

I remember a lot of people on here when my yanks were struggling saying ohh they are done. They are old and they suck. Well we all know you guys are yankee-haters but guess what we are back! I dont think we'll win the division and I doubt we will win the wild-card either but we do lead the wild card now but 1/2 game with seattle coming into NY on monday. I think whoever wins that series will probably win the wild-card. Regardless of the yanks making it into the playoffs or not, I'm excited to see the young pitching. Phil Hughes has struggled a little bit since he got injured will he coming back to what people expected. JOBA chamberlian is a beast, literally, in the bullpenn as is Edwar Ramirez. I'm excited to see how Ian Kennedy does in the big leagues this saturday as he is taking Mussina's spot in the rotation. I can definetly see the yanks are taking a new approach because had this been years before, they would never ever pull a veteran from the rotation for a young guy, but they are doing just that and all this in the middle of the penant and wildcard race.

I lived in NYC before and the love that town has for the Yankees is incredible. They all say "MY Yankees"! And it gave me a soft spot for them too, watching the way they talked about their beloved Yankee Stadium.

You think they'll keep Joba in the bullpen longterm or will he be a starter? I can't think of anyone in the last 10 years with as impressive stuff that didn't get seriously injured as a starter...whereas he could easily be Mo's replacement and dominate.
Hughes I'm gonna wait til next year to decide upon. He has pretty good stuff, but he just makes terrible pitches from time to time and it just takes one in the Bigs. My guess is he'll be a quality #2 or #3 guy for the Yanks.
Edwar Ramirez (http://mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=469735) is actually a youtube star if you weren't aware. He records under a pseudonym though.... YouTube - "Chocolate Rain" Original Song by Tay Zonday (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwTZ2xpQwpA)

This week reminded me of the Boston Massacre of last year.
Wonder if it will have the same affect.

One minor difference...last year it put the Yanks up by 6 games and they really hammered the Sox in those games. This year the Sox are still up by 5 games and all 3 games were actually pretty well played. There's nothing particularly demoralizing about these losses unlike last year.

I didn't say they were the same. It just reminded me of it.

I dont think they will keep Joba in the bullpeen long term especially if they sign Mo Rivera for next year. If they lose Riveria I think Joba will stay or Edwar will take over. There are not going to be many quality pitchers on the market this winter so I think if we resign Rivera Joba goes into the rotation and they might even tighten the "Joba Rules" because of the injury worry. He's been electric so far. I love what they have done and how they have brought these young guys in. They are adding more emotion and energy that is really driving the team. Phil Hughes, I agree with you many scouts are like drulling over this kid. I think he has a shot to be a quality #1 but we'll have to wait and see.

Really what they need to do if they're going to make him a starter is send him down to Birmingham during the offseason and have his throwing motion examined. If he has any flaws that put him at higher risk of injury maybe they could change them without killing his effectiveness. I'll be shocked if he's not the closer down the road though. He's like a Papelbon clone but with a couple more MPH on the fastball. For once this decade the Yanks and Sox could have the most dominant somethings without having paid for it or made some lopsided trade.
Speaking of paying for things, do you think Red Sox Nation and Yankee Nation can come to an agreement to leave Johan Santana alone? I'm not going to revoke my status as a fan if we sign him, but it really just wouldn't be fair. I'm hoping he stays in Minnesota.
Also, I can't believe no one had any reaction to the ESPN headline I mentioned in my first post. That's one of the craziest I've ever seen.

haha, I'm sorry but if Johan comes into the market as a free agent I swear I hope the yanks pay them ANYTHING HE WANTS! Give him a freaking 6 yr 150 million deal I dont care he is worth it.
Johan and Liriano are going to be a DEADLY combination in the central.

Yeah, it's a shame Carl Pohlad is so stingy. If they had any common sense they'd just offer him $20 million/yr and accept the fact that's a discount price. I think Johan would sign that deal, and they really need him back if they're going to sell seats in that new stadium. Mauer and Morneau are great hitters, but when Santana's pitching it's an event. And we all know, pitching wins championships.
You're right though...Liriano and Santana will be a crazy combo if Liriano comes back 100%.

all the talk about the Yanks good young pitchers, but the Sox have some really good prospects as well. one of them, Clay Buchholz, just threw a no-hitter in his 2nd career MLB start.
Congrats, Clay!
