View Full Version : Smelley to Start 1st game, Mitchell suspended
didn't see it anywhere so I figured I'd post it.

Did they say for sure that Smelley is the starter?

According to the article...."Chris Smelley is slated to start at quarterback against Louisiana-Lafayette on September 1st."
Did they say for sure that Smelley is the starter?
Yep....It's a done deal....

yeah, Waldo and I had accidently posted a bit about in the recruiting thread, lol. Don't know how that happened....
This is just additional punishment for the summer school absences earlier, and not over any new violations. Spurrier (IMO) is just getting his point across a little bit more to the players, but it's mostly for effect (Wallace is out with a broke collarbone anyway, so the suspensions means nothing to him). We were already planning to play a lot of our reserves in this game, to further get a feel for their readiness in real game situations. Both Smelley and Beecher have been looking very good in scrimmages, so I don't think we'll have a problem in the game....it will still be an easy win for us, IMO.

This move may prove to be REALLY SMART in the long run.
BEST OF ALL it gives the backups much need on the field game experience.
Secondly, as stated above in another post, SOS is sending a message to the whole team.

I know this isn't knew, but it just seems like Blake Mitchell can't ever seem to stay all the way out of trouble.
The million dollar question is, Who starts agaisnt UGA? I mean if Smelley shows real poise and lights it up against ULALA, he may get the start in Athens.

I, for one, will actually be glad when he's gone. Sorta reminds me of Reggie Ball in a way. While he was there, GA Tech fans (at least the one I know) were constantly pissed at him, but wanted him to play because they thought he was the best they had. Yet, after the ACC Champ game last year, when he was suspended for the bowl, all of them wound up being happy. Actually, they found out their backup wasn't as bad as people thought. Maybe that'll happen with us, and Blake will be free to go to five points, pick fights with bartenders, and hopefully get his head knocked off. It's such a shame that playing football for us interferes with his personal life so much.

Way to go Blake. Your doing well. Keep up the good work, and hopefully Smelley, who WANTS to be here, will light it up next Saturday and make you the water boy you were part of last year. Funny thing. Smelley said last night after practice he felt he could run this team, and just wanted a chance. Great job Chris. Your time has come.

Yeah, cause they could have said the starter is "smelly" and you misunderstood.

The Smelley era has begun. Unless he gets hurt in the first game, he is our guy. There is no need to wait. Since Garcia is being redshirted, USC is set at QB for at least the next 5 years. Smelley, Beecher, Garcia - names that the SEC faithful will come to know very well.

Until you get the unfaithful to recognize them, then it's really not that big of a deal. See, even the unfaithful know who Tim Tebow is...

If the Smelley throws a pass to reserve tailback Taylor Rank, the announcer will be forced to say "the cocks went from Smelley to Rank on that last reception."

Agree with 10000000000%. Mitchell just cant handle being a SEC quarterback. He doesn't realize the responsibilites he has as the starting QB on a team in the SEC and he should pay the price. Spurrier has given him enough chances to succeed and he hasn't really taken that and ran with it. He thinks this is all a joke and doesn't take being the starting QB job seriously as it seems. He thinks that he is the best on the team and he can do whatever he wants and his spot wont be taken but I hope Semlley proves him wrong. Smelley is fitted for Spurrier's system more so than Mitchell ever was and I hope he runs with the opportunity Mitchell and Spurrier have given him and he reamins our QB for the next 3-4 years. GOODBYE MITCHELL!

Where were you Blake bashers when he was suspended for the first practice or so? Nothing has changed since then. This is only added punishment. By the way, Blake's appealling the suspension and I for one hope he wins and guides our team to an undefeated season. Sorry if that scenario keeps some of you from bitching.

I think he should just grow the damn mullet and become the heir apparent to Steve Taneyhill. He's got the attitude problem already.

Well even if he's surpassed Taneyhill, I still demand a mullet.
If we can't get one on Mitchell, maybe we can get one on Garcia. He's started down the Taneyhill path with the car keying. Get him started early.

Glad to hear that Mitchell is fighting for something. I was not bashing him. I was saying that he abdicated his position to Smelley. If Smelley starts next week and does what we all believe that he can do, then he has the job for good.
I am sure that Mitchell knows that.
Who is doing the disciplining here? It sounds like that someone in academics. I thought that Spurrier was disciplining him for violating team rules.

The academic department suspended him. Spurrier had nothing to do with it.

Well, I hope this gets solved this today. We don't need to be undecided going into next week. We need to know who the QB is before we start next week preparing for Louisiana-Lafayette.
We need to start this season off on a Good FOOT. We not need this crap right now.

I agree with Dr. P. IMO, Mitchell and his Dad are fighting for his career today. If Mitchell's suspension stands, he may slip to #2 after the first game and see much less action this season. If Smelley shows out, Spurrier would be happy to supplant Budweiserman and his bad attitude for a guy that's with the program mentally.
Personally, I'm not optimistic that Mitchell can stay out of trouble for an entire season anyway. Might as well give Smelley the start for LaLa even if Budweiserman wins his appeal. We're going to need him and Beecher before the season is over. I'll be glad when Spurrier has all the BS (before Spurrier) players out of the system.

I imagine that Mitchell will still be the #1 QB after the UL-L game, and for the majority of the season. But it is good to know that should he stumble we have 2 capable back-ups to step in. Big difference from '05, isn't it??

Doesnt matter much....Blake will figure it out when he's done with this year and has a crappy college degree and will be hard pressed to find a good job. He will not be playing in the NFL for sure. I'll be happy to get rid of him. I want to see what Smelley can do...and even Garcia for that matter, although Garcia needs to get slapped too.

a lot of the reports are that Mitchell dropped a class, but that either he or the professor of the class did not follow through with the paper work, so the class counted as excessive absences. Mitchell did not realize this until he was notified that he would be held out of the 1st game, so he's appealing it. He apparently must think that the professor is at fault, or that he has a case to overturn the suspension.
