Shockley leaves with knee injury
Associated Press, Updated 2 hours ago

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Falcons third-string quarterback D.J. Shockley was carted off the field with 4 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter after spraining his left knee in Atlanta's 13-10 exhibition game win over the Buffalo Bills on Friday.

Falcons coach Bobby Petrino said Shockley will have an MRI exam Sunday to asses the severity of the injury.

"It didn't look good," Petrino said. "I didn't like the way he looked on the field."

Shockley, a 2006 seventh-round draft pick, was hurt after attempting to cut to the inside of the field on a 10-yard scramble. Shockley's right foot slipped when he planted it at the Buffalo 15-yard line, causing his left leg to twist awkwardly before he was tackled by linebacker Josh Stamer.

Shockley was 4-of-5 for 46 yards passing and added 18 yards rushing on three carries. He was replaced by second-stringer Chris Redman.

"Obviously he's distraught," Atlanta quarterback Joey Harrington said. "That's not anything you like to have happen. It may be a little while before he's able to get going again."

Shockley didn't play in any Falcons games last season as a rookie.

The Bills also were dealt a blow when backup defensive end Ryan Denney broke a bone in his left foot on the opening kickoff. The injury leaves Buffalo with only three experienced defensive ends - Chris Kelsay, Aaron Schobel and Anthony Hargrove.

Bills coach Dick Jauron didn't give a timeframe of how long Denney will be gone, but he wasn't optimistic.

"At the very least it will be a substantial amount of time," he said.

Shockley out for season

Falcons third-string quarterback D.J. Shockley will miss the rest of
the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament and injuring
the medial collateral ligament in his left knee in Friday's preseason
game against Buffalo, a person close to Shockley with knowledge of the
injury told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Surgery has not been scheduled because medical officials are waiting
for the swelling in the joint to subside, the person said.

The Falcons said Sunday they would not address Shockley's medical
situation until coach Bobby Petrino speaks to reporters after practice
Monday. The Falcons initially said Shockley's injury was a sprain but
they would have further details following an MRI exam, which was
administered Saturday.

Team officials spent the weekend exploring options to replace
Shockley, who was competing with Redman for the No. 2 job behind
starter Joey Harrington. They Falcons have held trade talks with
Philadelphia about veteran Kelly Holcomb but nothing had developed as
of Sunday.

There is a chance the Falcons will wait until after the first wave of
NFL player cut are made following their Aug. 27 preseason game to sign
a quarterback, most likely a veteran. Their direction could largely be
determined by how much faith Petrino has in Redman being Harrington's
main backup.

For now, second-year player Casey Bramlett, who was signed last week,
is the third quarterback.

Shockley suffered his injury while running with the ball on a
fourth-quarter drive against the Bills. Shockley's left knee buckled
as he made a cut and shortly before he was tackled.

The North Clayton High and University of Georgia product immediately
grabbed his knee and writhed in pain as trainers rushed onto the
field. Shockley, in his second season and an immensely popular player
locally, eventually was carted into the locker room.

I saw the play where DJ got hurt.

Is it just me, or did he look a lot bigger in a Falcons uniform than he did at UGA?
