The animal houses for LSU’s tiger mascot and Southern’s jaguar mascot are featured in a front-page story in today’s Wall Street Journal. The newspaper looked at the trend of building luxurious habitats for live college mascots. Southern University is planning a $1.5 million habitat for its next jaguar (Lacumba II died of old age several years ago), including miniature Mayan temples and a cascading waterfall. Southern students say they want the nice accommodations to show that the school is "moving to the future". The habitat is also a way of keeping up with the 15,000-square-foot estate on the LSU campus that will serve as the home for its new Mike. The Journal notes that longstanding rivalries and criticism from animal rights groups is fueling the mascot building boom.
