ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia football team strapped on shoulder pads for the first time this preseason on Monday, then went through a two-hours-plus session at the Woodruff Practice Fields.
Even with a temperature of 96 degrees and a heat index of 112 degrees, the Bulldogs looked sharper on their third day of workouts, according to Coach Mark Richt.
"They handled the heat about 10 times better than the first day," Richt said. "They sucked it up and worked hard, so I was pleased with that. On the first day, there were a lot of 'loafs.' They cut it down the second day and probably had even less today."
Guard Chris Davis said he thinks the Bulldogs' offensive line is showing improvement, despite having several underclassmen.
"We are young, but we're not using that as an excuse," the redshirt freshman said. "We have to face the challenge head on. We've got to keep going and keep trying to get better. We had a good spring and offseason, and that got our confidence up. Now we have to stay strong and keep doing things the right way."
Richt said cornerback Bryan Evans "felt better than he thought he would" after pulling a hamstring on Sunday. Richt called hamstring injuries "unpredictable" and said the team will be cautious on Evans' return. Cornerback Thomas Flowers wore a non-contact jersey after getting a shoulder stinger on Sunday, but Richt said Flowers "feels good."
Georgia, which is ranked 13th in the USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll, opens the season at Sanford Stadium against Oklahoma State on Sept. 1. Kickoff against the Cowboys is slated for 6:45 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2. All Georgia games are broadcast live on the Bulldog Radio Network on AM 750 WSB in Atlanta and on both 106.1 FM and 960 The Ref in Athens. The radio audio also can be heard worldwide on both georgiadogs.com, the official website of UGA Athletics, and on XM satellite radio.
