Wow, that's strange; but it's also refreshing when one considers that at least one school in our conference seems to do whatever it takes (grade changing, weak curriculum, etc.) to get their substandard student-athletes into school and keep them eligible. This is, in my opinion, the most reprehensible thing an institution that calls itself a university can do. And make no mistake, the fact that it's cheating isn't the most disgusting part... the worst aspect is that unprepared athletes will be passed along to the next round of tests (life) without the education necessary to do anything substantial in the workforce, should their dream of being a professional fail to materialize.

Universities reserve the right to make special exceptions for anyone with special talents. They make these exceptions for most football players, and every school does it. If a guy still can't make it in, then that's a major red flag to me about his academic situation.
Here's the deal. A coach can go to bat for the guys he signed if they are in academic limbo. Coaches will sometimes call for a "special admit" from the academic department. However, if you do it for everyone you sign, and if you do it often, then the admissions committee and the school administration will begin to lose faith that you are taking academics seriously. Spurrier called for a special admit for Melvin Ingram, but did not do it for Arkee Smith or Michael Bowman.
Like I said, the numbers always work themselves out when it comes to recruiting.

That's what I was thinking. Kudos to USC for towing (toeing?....whatever) the line.

UGA denied Michael Grant and Jamar Cheney, and they both went to Arky and Miss State, respectively. I'm curious to know how they are doing. I think schools can go overboard (cough cough Michael Adams)

The love affair continues.
PS- Auburn did not change any grades. Your accusation holds no more water than if I were to accuse UF of the same thing.

I did wonder about Auburn recruiting Enrique Davis.....his family has history with UF, but UF "cooled" on recruiting him because of his grade issues. I live near Panama City and have heard several times that his academics were pitiful...yet, Auburn signs him. I do realize that Auburn will "sign-n-place" guys...and that's cool. It just shows that Tubby has done well in recruiting and the stables are full so he can afford to lose some recruits to grades...I honestly will be happy in a year or two when the Gators can afford to lose recruits due to grades...right now, with only 78 scholarship players, we can't.

Cheney is pre-season All-SEC 3rd Team.
