I am looking to settle an office email thread war on who should be titled USC. Sounds stupid I know. Any way that you guys can show that USC(w) doesn't solely deserve the name based on performance?

This guy just dislikes SEC and tries to belittle them as often as possible. His point is South Carolina should never be labeled as USC in the media etc.

Thanks for the help.

First of all, tell him he's a doofus.

If you're east of the Mississippi, then

USC is South Carolina

U$C is Southern California

If you're west of the Mississippi, we don't give a sh*t what you think anyway. ;)

Ask him if he also thinks that the Securities and Exchange Commission should change its name.

The University of South Carolina(USC) was founded before California was a state. USC was founded in 1801, not exactly sure about California, but I can google it.

Not much grey area there....if you're not basing your argument on performance, the answer is obvious. They do have us in the performance catagory though. But that doesn't change the fact that they stole USC!

There's Southern California and there's USC. I don't understand what the argument is...our in-state rivalry with Clemson in football is longer than their school's history.

Same here... although, on this board, it's not really necessary to do that unless the topic could include the media debutantes. For the record, our USC was established in 1801, and started playing football in 1892. USC West wasn't established until 1880, but started playing football in 1888. So, South Carolina was first with the school initials by nearly 80 years, but didn't actually start playing ball until 4 years after Southern Cal.

I say SC for Southern Cal. and South Carolina for South Carolina!

I always refer to Southern Cal as Southern Cal (gotta admit it makes sense) or SoCal, and USC as USC, SC, or South Carolina. Either designation is not really for the team, but for the university that the team represents. It doesn't matter if you play point guard, nose tackle or shortstop for USC or take European Econimics at USC, it's still USC. Whether Southern Cal. started playing football before USC did is immaterial: USC was in existence for almost a century before Southern Cal was, and was even around before the State of California was a state. This reminds me of the "Death Valley" argument between Clemson and LSU...I will say that when i hear "USC" I immediately think of SoCal.....as did every male in my office today. South Carolina is usually referred to as SC or South Carolina around this area...but what difference does it make? I don't think anyone really cares except for maybe a few cocks and trojans...;)

We're sensitive about the issue because all we hear from Clemson and North Carolina is...."you're not known as the real usc, or the real carolina...so what does that make you?" It just gets annoying after a while....until we beat them...that shuts them up for about a week

There's humor in there somewhere, but I think you have to belong to a certain group to find it.

They're both USC as far as I am concerned. What about UM?

UM = University of Mississippi, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, University of Miami (FL & OH), University of Maryland, and many more.

I call Mississippi, Ole Miss or OM, or the Rebels or just Mississippi. I call Michigan, Michigan. I usually refer to Miami(FL) as UM (In addition to scUM, dUMb, Miami, the Canes, or the Hurricanes). Maryland is Maryland. That's just me though.

For me, I address the Cocks as SC and the Trojans as USC.

While we're on the subject: why is Georgia UGA? There is no other state that begins with G. Why the full-state abbreviation? I can't wait to play UTN. UFL is a big game this year, ya know. That McFadden down at UAR is something else. Maybe if we have a good season we can have a bowl game against UTX.

Speaking of UTX, I do refer to the Horns as UTx, and the Vols as UT (among other not so nice names and acronyms).

I think we're known as SCAR and they're known as USC. At least that's what's always on the ESPN gameboard. They get the national publicity and we don't, so they get to call themselves whatever they'd like and we can't do a thing about it. Same with Carolina Tarholes. It could change but I doubt it. If we start winning big and getting more national attention and fans outside of our region, they may at least start calling SoCal, SOCA or SCAL and then SCAR wouldn't bother me so bad.

Hey! That's a great question. Which name do you guys like best for Southern Cal; SOCA (pronounced "Sucka" or "Soaka") or SCAL?

Zee
07-18-2007, 08:29 PM
I think I am among a few Gamecock fans that don't really care what they call us. I know ESPN is going to get all wet over Southern Cal, so if it says SCAR by our score I don't care. I know in my heart that when it is all said and done, the people of Southern California have to live in Southern California and that is punishment enough. That being said, I was a little irritated when they tried to claim the interlocking "SC" from our baseball logo. That is just straight bullshit. I think we are still in a legal battle over that by the way...

For everyone who is gettting a kick out of the "Trojans" and the "Cocks", it reminds me of the best bumper sticker ever. We played and defeated the other USC in 1983. The bumper sticker/t-shirt of that year was:

"No Trojan can hold our Cocks"

dcbama
07-18-2007, 09:22 PM
but I think that until South Carolina is in contention for something more than the occasional Outback Bowl, this really isn't a question. The Trojans can be SC or USC at this point and South Carolina will be South Carolina. For the record, I think the Cocks will insert themselves into that debate before too long, but they're not there yet.

We are UA, THE Universty of Alabama. The main college that represents the state, you know?

It's kind of half ignorant to use UAT. The University of Alabama is located in Tuscaloosa, but you don't have to say Tuscaloosa. You only say the city in UAB, because its not the state's main University. :closedeye

Also, don't care if you said it to get a rouse out of it...had to acknowledge it.

Because the NCAA record books (the ones that you use to back up all your MNC claims) have Bama's official name as "University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa". UAT. Auburn is just listed as "Auburn University".

Then why did you state in an earlier post that you call Arkansas, UA? On your list that you use, they list University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Using your logic for calling Alabama UAT, you should call Arkansas UAF. The University of Arizona should be UA since they are simply listed as University of Arizona on the list.

And I guess we should be USCC since we are listed as University of South Carolina, Columbia.

Actually, there are quite a few major universities that they listed the city after the University name (Tennessee, North Carolina, Texas A&M, Nebraska, and the list could go on).

Your logic makes sense to me.

Those names are the NCAA reference names, and do not always reflect the institution's official name. All you have to do is read the list to see multiple instances where the NCAA label is not the same as the official name.

The official name is The University of Alabama. Period. End of Discussion. That's what is says on the university seal, that's what it says on my diplomas.

If referring to the Capstone as UAT gives you some transient feeling of achievement, though, feel free. Those inferiority complexes don't feed themselves.

OSU = Ohio State Univ., Oregon State Univ., Oklahoma State Univ.

We differ ourselves here at the real OSU as "the" Ohio State University or tOSU. It is actually the official name of Ohio State.
