LSU professor blames 'Mister Rogers' for begging students

LSU finance professor Don Chance took aim at Mister Rogers in a Wall Street Journal article Thursday. In "Blame it on Mister Rogers: Why Young Adults Feel so Entitled," Chance relates an epiphany he had the end of last spring semester as his students, as usual, filed into his office begging for extra points to raise their grades to an A.
"They felt so entitled," Chance says. "And it just hit me: We can blame Mister Rogers." The late Fred Rogers' message to children was that they were special just for being themselves. Chance says that unlike his American students, his Asian-born students take whatever grade they are given and interpret B's or C's as evidence they need to work harder.
Chance wishes more parents would lay it on the line: "The world owes you nothing. You have to work and compete. If you want to be special, you'll have to prove it."
