Two teens shot after fireworks display

Two teenagers were shot while walking on the levee near the USS Kidd last night after the city fireworks display. Police are looking for the shooter. Baton Rouge Police spokesman Cpl. L'Jean McKneely said a 17-year-old male was shot in the head, and a 16-year-old female was hit in the torso at about 10:15 p.m. The girl is in stable condition, while the boy is in "very critical" condition at a local hospital, he says.
Police say both victims were innocent bystanders. McKneely said police plan to release a description of the shooter this afternoon. A handgun was found near the scene; a pending ballistics test should show whether it was the same gun used in the shooting, he says. There was talk that other violent incidents happened after the fireworks display, including stabbings.
McKneely said police responded to a few fights last night, but no arrests were made. He said there was a stabbing on Eddie Robinson Sr. Drive, but had no further information other than to say it was unrelated to the shooting. Robert Combs, spokesman for the Baton Rouge Fire Department, said this morning he was unaware of any incidents his department may have responded to last night, although he said he would not necessarily have been notified if firefighters had assisted on a fight or a stabbing.

Come on, Geaux. There's no way to tell if this is because of New Orleans. Four people were taken into custody last night, and all four were released several hours later. There's a press conference that started at 2:00 cst with the Mayor and the Chief of police. We'll know more later. Here's links:

I haven't heard anything about a stabbing, though. Do you have a link?

I'm just saying the locations are changing. Such shootings are not uncommon in North Baton Rouge, but to happen at such a public event with lots of families and children present in downtown Baton Rouge raises your concern.

It certainly does. Hopefully something positive comes out of this with the meeting between Mayor Holden and Chief LaDuff. They sounded like the BR area policing is going to get a major overhaul regarding violent crime, which "seems" to be getting worse with the youth in areas like Old South BR, the GSRI area, and North Baton Rouge. Like I said, I hope something very positive comes out of this. It would be a travesty if fireworks on the Levee becomes too dangerous for families and their kids. That's a Baton Rouge pasttime and everyone should be able get along and enjoy it.

It sounds like the mayor is right on top of this. His zero tolerance on gun-toting hoodlums is a good start.

We have too many great outdoor events, such as Bonfires on the Levee at Christmas, Friday's Live After Five (music in downtown), etc., to let hoodlums make them unsafe.

Definitely. The thug-culture is a cancer and they need to eradicate it. Baton Rouge is too fine a city with lots of terrific people for several bad apples to bring it down to the level New Orleans has been the last several years.

For a city that's home to perhaps the finest HCBU in the country, I hope to see Baton Rouge work hard to keep the ghetto thug culture away. That starts with cracking down on drugs and continuing to promoting 2 parent households that are stable.
