Roy Clark - Before you scream...
There was a series of books called the Book of Lists. They posed this same question to many well known guitarists (Clapton, Paige, etc.). Nearly every list said Roy Clark was the best stringed instrument picker alive.
Too many greats to list just five.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Eric Clapton

One of the main influences that just about every major guitarists agree on is the legendary Chet Atkins. I use to be into the guitar during my teenage years back in the late 80's & early 90's. One thing I noticed over and over again was that when asked who influenced them the most, almost every big time guitarist would have Chet Atkins on his list. I had no idea who this was so I found some of his stuff and was blown away.

Absolute most wild guitarist of all time. Check out jazz greats Pat Martino and Pat Metheny. Metheny's first album, Bright Size Life, is an absolute classic...although bassist Jaco Pastorius up-stages him in just about every song.

Very true, and the same can be said for Les Paul. I have an album with Chet Atkins and Les Paul playing together. Each of them had such a distinctive style that it is easy to tell when Chet is taking the lead and when Les Paul is taking the lead.
I have several guitars (I'm sort of guitar broke), but my most expensive is a Gibson Les Paul.
