COLUMBIA — South Carolina football signee Quintin Richardson was stabbed early Sunday morning in an apparent fight at a Columbia-area apartment complex, police said. Richardson, an 18-year-old offensive line prospect from Columbia, was involved in a verbal altercation with 19-year-old Ross Grant that became physical, said Lt. Chris Cowan of the Richland County Sheriff's Department. Richardson was wounded in the upper body, but the injuries are not considered life-threatening, Cowan said.
The incident occurred at Hunter's Green Apartments in northeast Columbia, not far from Spring Valley High School, where Richardson recently graduated. No charges have yet been filed, and Cowan said police are still in the early stages of piecing together what led to the fight that landed Richardson in the Providence Hospital Northeast emergency room. That's where police learned of the incident, Cowan said, at 2:25 a.m. Sunday. "At this point in time we're investigating to determine what the altercation was about and why he was stabbed," Cowan said. "We have several people we need to interview, including Richardson and Grant. That's really all we can say right now."
Despite enduring a knee injury that cost him most of his senior year, Richardson was still one of the more highly thought-of recruits in a nationally lauded recruiting class for the Gamecocks. Rivals.com rated him as a four-star prospect, the fifth-best player in the state and the eighth-best offensive tackle in the country. If the injuries do not hold him back, Richardson could compete for playing time on an offensive line that coach Steve Spurrier has been critical of in recent months.
