This is from another gamecock message board

After reading the story below about Spurrier rewarding M. Flint with a scholarship, I thought I'd share another good story I heard today from a trustee/board member at USC. I was asking him about the new ballpark and other construction plans and he told me pretty much everything I've read on this board. What was interesting was the story about USC's bicentennial.
For those of you that don't know, USC was established in 1801, but the first class did not graduate until 1807 (5 total graduates all from Newberry, SC). As apart of the celebration this year, the school has researched the 5 graduate’s family trees and have invited all of them to Carolina for a mock graduation later on this year.
It turns out that one of Ben Crenshaw (famous golfer) grandfather's was one of the first 5 graduates at Carolina. The higher ups thought this was a great fundraising opportunity, so they called Crenshaw and told him that they want to do a golf t'ment in Dec. at Musgrove Mill and have him play with Spurrier. Well, Crenshaw signed off on it and it was now up to Spurrier to commit.
The school contacted Spurrier and asked coach if he'd play. Coach asked what the date was and they told him it was Thursday Dec. 6th. In classic Spurrier fashion he responded as follows "Nah, appreciate the offer but we'll be practicing for the SEC championship being played that Saturday."
I thought that was a great story and really shows how much confidence Spurrier has in this team in 2007.

He's gonna need it with road games at UGA, Less-U, Arkansas, and Tennessee....that's a brutal slate.

Road game at UNC, too, and I think you'll definitley win there, but Butch Davis will make it tougher than Bunting would have....fwiw.

FWIW I'm the only USC fan willing to admit that we have two chances at LSU...slim and none. The rest are at least winnable imo. (Before you all jump on me I'm not saying we'll win all the rest, just that I don't count them as AUTOMATIC losses)

you're not the only USC fan here by far that thinks that....most others have also written the LSU game as a loss, even if they write the other major games as "toss-ups" (including myself). I don't think anyone will jump on you for saying what they (for the most part) agree with....

I think if everyone else is a toss-up, then Less-U should be a toss-up, too. They haven't proven they're unbeatable.

I'd wait to see how the new kids progress before "giving" them any games, imo.

10-2 and an appearance in atlanta is what I've been saying all offseason. I'm still believing.

I wasn't trying to diss the Gators by calling them a toss up and LSU a loss. I was simply factoring in the reality that at least we get you guys at home. Playing at LSU was the deciding factor in doubting our chances there.

No, I didn't mean it that way. I was just saying that if SOS really has everything together to play with anyone, then Less-U should be worried, too...but I see what you're saying.

Road games for any SEC team are tough, no matter who you are.

Agreed.

I wrote off the Auburn game last season as a definite loss. If it weren't for a dropped TD pass and a total of 1 foot on 2 different goal line over the tops by kenny irons, that game goes to the cocks. I'm not expecting to win at LSU, but I will never again assume that we have no chance against any team.

Auburn was not our toughest opponnent last year, in my opinion. I think they're pretty overrated. Both Arkansas and Florida were much tougher.

Don't put too much stock in it. We said the same thing last year about the smirk he had going into all of his press conferences. South Carolina will be comptetive. At this point we all know that.

This is by far his best shot. I also believe that this is his best chance until another 2-3 years away. This year he has a lot of experience and playmakers like Mitchell, Boyd, Brinkley, etc. Seniors make a difference. Any juniors you are afraid of losing after this coming season? That could hinder the other years.

Spurrier is sweating confidence these days. Making comments like he believes the 2007 recruiting class will bring Carolina it's first SEC Championship (not meaning necessarily this year, but while they are here), making no bones about the fact that if Carolina can beat Georgia we have a shot at this thing (Also saying it will be almost impossible if we don't win that one), and some other comments he has made. Fun time to be a Gamecock. 2008 is when many experts are looking at Carolina, but he is gonna get as close as he can this year. And for those who write us off as a loss to LSU, has he not already proven to you he can play ANYBODY with much less talent? The talent gap has closed tremendously. What does that tell you? Games like Georgia and LSU are the kind of games he lives for, just like any other coach worth anything. I can assure you he hasn't put an L beside them on his schedule.

That's true, too. This will be our worst defense for the next 3-4, maybe 5, years. The offense will only get better, too, as Tebow gains experience, but we shouldn't have the drop-off on offense like we'll have with the defense this year....

Then again, who knows how our front seven will turn out. Maybe Dunlap, Davis, and the LBs will overachieve. Can't tell this early...
