Hate to see this legend come to an end. I always love to hear his "big play" reruns.

Munson: Retirement a real possibility
Legendary voice of Bulldogs meets with Evans to discuss 'contingency plans' (http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/uga/stories/2007/06/19/0620munson.html)

Hard to imagine anyone else calling a Bulldog football game.

I will always remember calls such as "Run Lindsay, run..." of course...but I will most remember the game in Athens a few years back between UT and UGA. An underdog UT team dominated most of the game and held on to win. Munson's call of the last drive went something like this:

"Is this how it's gonna be? We're going to lay down in our own house and let them come in here and whip us?"

The last play:
"It's fourth and forever and this will be the last play of the game. (dejected) Green goes back to pass...he heaves it toward the endzone and it is...intercepted...and the boys in the silver britches all fall to a knee...and Rocky top plays on and on and on."

I didn't have a dog in the fight but I nearly wrecked my truck laughing.

It would be sad to see Munson go...

I have listened to Scott Howard do Basketball games and I really like the way he keeps the excitement level up over the radio. He is a good broadcaster and would hopefully get the nod.

We stepped on their face with a hobnail boot that day....

The tone of his voice kinda got on my nerves. :laugh:
On a serious note...I hope he gives UGA at least one more year. He is as much a part of Georgia football as all the Uga dogs combined.

I must admit I do enjoy hearing his many analogies & the way he gets so excited on the radio. For those of us who grew up here in GA, you know how common it is/was to see our fathers & grandfathers watch the game on TV but turn the volume down and listen to Larry Munson on the radio.

Georgia football will still be big here but it will never be quite the same again without Munson making the calls.

Again, I hope he gives UGA at least one more year. He's a great guy and I have a ton of respect for him.

Wow, I'd hate to see him go. It's guys like him that halp to make college football so great. It's good to have a "homer" calling your games. I think it adds to the excitement of the game when the guy calling it is really pulling for your team. We lost Jim Fyffe three years ago and I'm still having a hard time getting use to the new guy. I think his name is Rob Bramlett or something. He's good but he's no Jim Fyffe. I'm sure the UGA faithful will feel the same about whomever comes after Munson.

You think so? I can't say that I have ever heard him call a game. One thing is for sure, Larry Munson has turned that job into one that is just as prestigious as being HC or athletic director at UGA. It will take a BIG man to fill that job and any UGA fan will tell you that no one will ever truly replace Larry Munson.

So when it comes to notable radio guys, I can think of the following for each SEC team:

Auburn= Jim Fyffe (RIP)
Alabama = Eli Gold
Georgia = Larry Munson
Arkansas = Paul Eells(RIP)

Who else is there for the other 8 programs?

Its Mick Hubert for Florida. Hes been with us since 89 I believe. He calls football, basketball, baseball, and other sports occasionally. I enjoy listening to his broadcasts but ever since I left south GA, I don't get to hear him much anymore. :sad:

Tough when a legend heads out to pasture. He will be missed if he doesn't come back this year. Some great calls over the years. The war over his successor has already begun. It's gonna get ugly unless they decide quick. Lots of backstabbing and throatcutting going on.

Hey AU Champ, you left our one of the Legends, Jack Crystal at MS,, He is on his 55th year as voice of the Bulldogs, He and Muson have been doing it a long time, It will be the same at State when he goes. I have followed MS since mid 60's and always remember scanning the radio and waiting for that distinct voice, Just like I do living in Georgia, once you hit a station and you hear Munson you just stop to see what is happening, Those old guys tell it like it is, They may not like the outcome but they state the facts, One thing most of the new guys don't do. They are too biased .

The "Voices" of our teams are just as much a part of Gameday as the tailgating, the pregame celebrations, and the actual football.

It'd be awesome if there was a compilation of the best audio from various SEC "Voices" and even a book that detailed each of them. I know it'd interest me.

Just a little info for you guys.

So revising the list:

Auburn= Jim Fyffe (RIP)
Alabama = Eli Gold
Georgia = Larry Munson
Arkansas = Paul Eells(RIP)
Kentucky = Cawood Ledford
Mississippi State = Jack Crystal
Florida = Mick Hubert

So that leaves Tennessee, LSU, Vandy, South Carolina, and Ole Miss. Come on guys, let's complete the list here.

Here is another question. When Munson fully retires who will be the veteran play by play caller in the SEC? That's of course assuming Munson is the oldest...

I think Jack Crystal is the oldest now and if Munson is older, then I'm sure he'll be the oldest once Munson retires.
