The State | 06/15/2007 | Newton leaves Canada (http://www.thestate.com/188/story/92395.html)

What do you think? I'll give him I wouldn't want to live in Canada, but he has a chance to play a form of pro ball. It also sounds like a slap in the face to Carolina. I pretty sure he blames the coaches for putting him at different positions for not going to the NFL.

He has a legit gripe IMO. He's not just some thug player, he's really smart, really savvy, and he has been screwed a few times during his time at Carolina. He always put the team first and he suffered b/c of that....

Sounds like Robert Johnson at UA, but I think ROJO had it a little worse.

I think you play wherever the people that are paying you ask you to play. Doesn't make sense to quit a job without a job, especially in professional football. So I guess he intends to work out in Columbia and get a QB position...where? If he could have stayed and played and got paid, then he may have gotten a shot at QB down the road. Doesn't add up.

Sadly, Newton's achilles heel is his achilles heel. We all know he isn't as slow as he showed at the Combine and USC's pro day but I guess that's what the free education is for; something to fall back on. He was a helluva player for us and yeah, he did put the team first without fail but let's face facts here too. Syvelle Newton was a decent quarterback, not a great one. He probably looked better taking snaps due to his scrambling ability and buying time for receivers to get open by moving the pocket and/or throwing on the run but pro teams don't often take chances on marginally good athletes (by NFL standards) who have a recent torn achilles.

He's not just some thug player

You clearly don't know Syvelle Newton. He was a great player for Carolina, but he's definitely a thug. He stole from the university and even punched the student body president in the face. Most students who had some sort of interaction with him while he was at Carolina would tell you that he's not as nice of a person as he seems.
