University of Florida player Matt LaPorta was the 7th overall selection by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft. LaPorta is the second highest selection overall by a Florida player. John Burke was selected sixth by the Houston Astros in 1991.

LaPorta was drafted in the 14th round last season by the Boston Red Sox. There is a possibility that LaPorta might be asked to move to left field because of the Brewers infield depth. Looks like he'll be battling fellow Gator, David Eckstein, in the National League Central.

I don't know what Milwaukee was thinking. They already have Fielder at 1st. Unless they are gonna try to get Matt to play catcher like he did in High School.

Read the post again. He's probably going to be moved to left field. The common conventional wisdom concerning draft picks these days is: take the best possible player regardless of position. Of course that doesn't include the specialty positions like catcher and pitcher. I guess they couldn't ignore his bat, and he can play about 5 different positions.
