View Full Version : Which Four Teams Would You Say Must Win Big This Season?

Matt Hayes from MNBC Sports list these four teams and their coaches: SN: Pretty good won't be enough for these coaches - College football - MSNBC.com (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18990426/)

1. Les Miles, LSU Before Miles, the Tigers hadn't won double-digit games in back-to-back seasons in the program's 100-plus years. Even the Nicktator didn't do it. Why, then, is this a crossroads season for Miles? Because those four losses the past two years were god-awful -- and kept a loaded team from winning a meaningful championship. Meltdowns against Tennessee and Georgia in 2005 and a combined 13 points in losses to Auburn and Florida in 2006 kept the Tigers from backing up their magical 2003 season. The skinny: An SEC or national championship could translate to a new job -- don't think he won't leave for another college job (Michigan) or the NFL. The schedule is favorable, and the bar is set at 11 wins. Anything else is a step back. The numbers: 22-4 at LSU, 8-4 vs. ranked teams, 2-0 in bowl games.

2. Lloyd Carr, Michigan The two sides to the argument: Carr is the best coach in the history of the program, or Carr has done less with more than any other coach. I tend to fall with the former, no matter what the Bo crowd says. But the past five years have not helped Carr's cause: Michigan is 1-4 vs. bitter rival Ohio State and 1-4 in bowl games. That's eight losses at the end of the past five seasons. Now more than ever, this program needs a defining championship to reassert itself among the nation's elite. The skinny: Carr's disdain for the NCAA's hypocritical ways eventually will lead to his retirement. A national title -- or another late-season stumble -- may be the nudge it takes. The numbers: 113-36 at Michigan, 39-23 vs. ranked teams, 5-7 in bowl games.

3. Bill Callahan, Nebraska It all sets up for Callahan this fall: Year 4 in Lincoln means four full recruiting classes aimed at changing the run-oriented culture. It also brings Sam Keller, the onetime Arizona State quarterback (and potential NFL first-rounder) who transferred to take over the offense. And, finally, the Big 12 has never been weaker. What's not to like? How about a team that still isn't tough enough to control the tempo (see: West Coast offense) and a staff that still is learning the nuances of the college game. The skinny: I still think hiring Callahan was the right move, but this team is desperate for a signature victory. Winning the Big 12 is the expected next step under Callahan. If not this year, when? The numbers: 22-15 at Nebraska, 3-6 vs. ranked teams, 1-1 in bowl games.

4. Karl Dorrell, UCLA He has the toughest job among BCS schools. Dorrell must set up shop across town from, recruit player-for-player alongside and constantly be measured against the best program in the nation. The Bruins' victory against the Trojans last year upped the ante. Now UCLA not only is expected to compete with USC, but -- with 20 starters returning -- the Bruins are expected to compete for the Pac-10 title. Ten wins is a legitimate goal and would eliminate doubts stemming from last year's step back after 2005's 10-win season. The skinny: Dorrell loves the NFL and eventually wants to return as a head coach (he has turned down opportunities). But he won't leave his alma mater until the Bruins return to the Rose Bowl. That might just happen this season. The numbers: 29-21 at UCLA, 4-11 vs. ranked teams, 1-3 in bowl games.

I hate that gay earpiece Miles wears.

He wore it about, well, one game in Tiger Stadium, and by half time he was wearing what he wears now. The noise was too loud in Tiger Stadium to wear that type of earpiece! Cutting edge technology doesn't always work on the football field.

I think I would also put in Phil Fulmer as well since I hear a lot of Tennessee fans complaining about him.

I think Lloyd Carr at Michigan is on the biggest hot seat in the nation. They are getting tired of mediocre seasons and wasting all the talent they are bringing in. This will be the fourth year together for Henne, Hart, and Manningham (3) so nothing less of a national title and a Big 10 championship will be excepted. It happened to us with John Cooper whom was 1-9-1 againist Michigan and at about .500 in bowl games during his tenure. They'll go 11-1 with that one loss coming Nov 17th!

He'll make it TO the season just fine. But his rump will be roasting the entire year. IMO, this will be his last if Arky doesn't make it to the SECCG.

Good to see that it's not just your predictions that are completely lame!!
:offtopic:
I think the original list looks pretty good to me! Anything short of an SEC West crown for LSU would be a HUGE disapointment! Carr just might as well be at the door waiting for the call if he loses to Ohio St and doesn't win the Big 10 again!! I honestly didn't know (and especially didn't care) who coached UCLA these days, but if he's on the seat, so be it!
I would HOPE that Fulmer would be an HM 5th!! It's hard to put a number to it, but even a 5-3 SEC record (should they look as unimpressive as they have in recent years) I would hope would signify AT LEAST a good look at moving the program in a different direction. I honestly think it's "an SEC East Championship or see ya year" for Fulmer and would support that!

I'm sure Nutt is gone unless he manages to win both the SECCG and their bowl game.
Getting to either is going to be a long shot in of itself.

The comment about Carr doing more with less sounds familiar for some reason.

Maybe it has something to do with me being an Arkansas fan...

I don't think Dorell is necessarily on the hot seat at UCLA. UCLA finished the year with some good momentum and had a pretty decent year. He is also recruiting very well and already has like 12 four star guys committed for next year. I think with the talent at UCLA now he could very well make a run at the PAC-10 title this year and if he has a good year and a great recruiting class I can't see UCLA pushing him out the door.
