Just to get it out in the open I do not hate Tim Tebow. I think he will be a good QB for Florida especially after seeing th Orange and Blue game, but it seems like everytime i pick up a football magazine i always see a big article on TT. One mag i seen even has him 2nd in the heisman running! That seems a little ridiculous to me. Especially since he has never even started a game at the college ranks. I mean haven't heard Florida fans on here talk much about a repeat, but alot gator fans i know already have him taking the Gators to another NC win in 2007. Is it possible for him to live up to all this hype as his first year as a starter? Or are some gator fans setting them selfs up for disapointment?

Let me get this out of the way, I HATE Tim Tebow. He is the most overrated player I think i have ever seen. If he beats teams at crunch time with his arm i will at least give him a little respect but that's it. all it will take is a bad season and the fickle gator fans will turn their backs on him and sing the praises of a cam newton or john brantley. tebow is set up to fail.

Typical remarks concerning Tebow from non-Gators...but tell me this...wouldn't you like to have him on your team? Be honest...;)

See, there's a fine line between envy and hate...I won't stoop so low...take Stafford for instance. He didn't "light-up" the SEC last season...but I see the "potential" for a star SEC QB...and I can admit it.

Well, the kid was hyped before he even left high school. People were mentioning the word Heisman in the same breath with his name before he even picked UF, simply from looking at his high school performances. So far, he's lived up to the hype. Fans of other teams may not be so impressed because Meyer only let him do certain things last year. He played on a sort of leash, especially with the passing game. Two reasons for that. First, we already had a senior QB that Meyer trusted to throw the ball, and run the offense the majority of the time. No point in ruining drives because of a freshman mistake. At the same time, he did want the kid to get his feet wet. Second, I think Meyer wanted to give as little away as possible, regarding Tebow's throwing ability. Let everyone find out when they have to face him. And, he had a hitch concerning release time that Meyer wanted to correct prior to full-time duties. In an interview 2 months ago, Meyer said they had accomplished that; and Tebow was ready to take the reins... even then.

But, as UF fans, we follow his progress more closely than fans of other teams; and we get to see more actual play and watch film. The sports analysts do that for any player they're going to write an article about too, so, they're aware of the potential. Those who pay particular attention to TT know he's a gunslinger, and will put up big numbers. Rival fans are basing their predictions on incomplete information i.e., only what they saw Tebow do in restricted duty last season. That would be a mistake; and I'm quite certain there isn't a single rival HC or DC making the same one. If you're a fan of any team that plays UF, you better hope your coach isn't judging Tebow on what he was ALLOWED to do last year.

As far as winning a NC, the rest of you guys are lucky that most of the Gators here are a little more circumspect about our chances of winning a title. Every fan base has its irrational fans, and they often let their optimism about a single player override common sense. I've always thought that was an oxymoron, because sense often seems far from common. In any event, most of us have stated that we don't see a NC this year for a couple of reasons. We have some questions on defense, with so many going pro after last year. And, Tebow is bound to make some sophomore mistakes in his first year starting full-time. I don't think either of those will keep us from being a great team... maybe just not championship caliber.

That said, it's not out of the question, because we believe in our coaching staff's ability to get guys ready. We had numerous freshmen contribute a great deal all year (think Tebow and Harvin). That's a Meyer philosophy, and one that more and more coaches are adopting. At a time when players are leaving early with ever increasing frequency, coaches are finding it necessary to play their freshmen right away, to get any decent production out of them before they bolt for the NFL. If it doesn't happen this year, AGAIN, watch out in '08, when those two guys will be juniors, and have 2 years of experience under their belts.

Tim Tebow scored 890 on the SAT; Chris Leak scored an 8 on the wonderlic and won a bcs nc; Vince young scored a 6 and won a nc. Florida is my favorite to repeat as NC, just based on that pattern of dumbness

Chris Leak scored an 8 after only taking a small part of the test... 12 questions. He graduated from the University of Florida in the Fall, 2006 semester with a degree in sociology from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He was a finalist for the Draddy Trophy, also known as the Academic Heisman for college athletes. He was a keynote speaker during the graduation ceremony, an honor only a handful of individuals are allowed to participate in, due to their achievements in college.

While in college, Leak was listed on the SEC Academic Honor Roll each semester at UF. His mentors describe him as possessing tremendous motivation, compassion and the unique ability to lead by example. His peers agreed and elected him team captain three of the four years he played at UF.

Probably should do your homework before making statements that people might construe as your own pattern of dumbness.;)

Maybe if he finished the test, he'd actually have been a draft choice. Wonder if this was one of the 12 questions:

actual wonderlic question: 8. When rope is selling at $.10 a foot, how many feet can you buy for sixty cents?
Maybe there were some questions about running the option. I'm sure he missed those.

I'm sure that's true. At UF, he'd have had to answer questions at the best academic school in the conference. Already the highest ranked public SEC university, UF may surpass even private school, Vandy, this year. Many publications already consider UF a better school than Vandy.

We've had this discussion numerous times in previous threads, so I won't take the time to look up all the accolades and articles supporting my statement. Somehow, I don't think he has any regrets, whatsoever. I'm sure of this: As far as options go, he has far more than any one person needs. He's on a pro team, has some really nice jewelry, and graduated with a 3.+ from one of the best universities in the country. None of which he'd have had he ended up at Rocks Up Top.

Leak answered 12 questions on a "sample test" and scored a 8.....this is old news...we had this discussion months ago, newbie. We provided the "link" then. As far as Tebow's 890, that was a score he made in the 9th or 10th grade...he retook the SAT and had a much better score...don't know what it was, but he's currently making straight A's at one of the top public universities in America...so I wouldn't use the term "dumb" to describe him...especially if I root for UT...

The question was: "wouldn't you like to have him on your team?"

Stafford, like any QB, is one play away from sitting on the bench for a year with an injury...so, wouldn't you like to have a guy like Tebow as a "back-up"...

Thanks for the pic! I've been looking for one that good for months. Now there can't be any question that that was an incomplete pass.

As far as Tebow is concerned, everybody wanted him out of high school, especially UGA. All the fans I know (and there are plenty in Atlanta), were crushed when he picked UF, and were like, well, "Stafford should be pretty good, too.".

Where Vandy is concerned, I'm not going to debate something with some flamer who's only relying on past reputation and perception to further his argument. UF has been moving up on Vandy for the past 10 years, and already surpasses them as a research facility. Again, there are numerous threads devoted solely to this topic, and while Vandy still holds the academic crown, the difference has narrowed considerably. In fact, some publications already consider UF the best SEC school, academically. Either way, the gap between UF and Vandy, and the other 10 schools is enormous. UGA has made headway, but their GSR for student athletes has been so bad for so long, that they're not really on the same level as the other two. I don't mind doing my homework, but I'm not doing it twice for anyone too lazy to do their own. The research isn't difficult... most of the facts are on this site. Run a search. Don't prove my point by refusing to learn on your own.

This has nothing to do with the thread...but thank god this isn't the Sportsline.com message board or instead the pleasent discussion we see before us we'd be privvy to such intelligent remarks as "Tim tebow is a P****y" or perhaps (this was an actual thread topic from that board) "The Gators are a bunch of C**ts". Thank god for SECtalk.com

So, I should not say anything bad about UF? Because I have a lot of opinions of Herban Meyer that you won't like.

\Just tell me if that is one of the unwritten rules and I will stick to it.

At this point...I would give Stafford the edge. Any UF fan would wish that Tebow had as much PT (and therefore experience) as Stafford did last season.
Ill wait till about 2 or 3 SEC games into the season before I make an actual judgment on who is better.
I think no matter what, Stafford is better for UGA's offense and Tebow is better for UF's offense.

I think I'm one of the few non UGA fans who noticed Stafford come along ever since the AU game. I think he was developing rather nicely. Hopefully he can pick up where he left off last season. Hes going to have to as OSU and USC will be no pushovers. IMO if Stafford looks good in those two early tests...the rest of the East is in trouble.

If Tim Tebow doesn't top the oppositions " most hated rival player " at the end of the season, I'll be very disappointed. He's made great progress in the off season with both mechanics and understanding the offense. Everyone knows he has game, so desire is certainly not an issue.

I can understand that stance...I sure as heck wouldn't trade Tebow for any QB in the Nation...and UGA doesn't have a QB on their roster that I'd trade Cam Newton for. Now, if Shockley was still around...

If Meyer doesn't take UF to the NCG this year, he will be in the hotseat.

Ummm ok??? So the guy that won the toughest conference in America and the NC in his 2nd year at UF is going to be on the hot seat if he doesn't take his team to the NCG this year??? I dont see ur logic. I dont think Florida will repeat i think this will be a reloading year for them but in 08 they look very very scary to me.

I've actually said the same thing numerous times, as far as how Stafford should perform this season. I think he and Tebow will light it up in the WLOCP. It should be a regular fireworks show. While Stafford made some really bad decisions typical of a freshman early on last year, he did start to come on later. Or, maybe he just threw it to opposing DB's because they're the only ones who'd catch it. His receivers (even the supposedly sure-handed ones) couldn't catch the ball if it had been coated with Liquid-Nail.

If the receivers are better, he should have a big year. I think he's past the poor decision-making phase.

Sure you wouldn't. And, last year, I'd have played Cox before letting Stafford continue to stink up stadiums. Cox looked A LOT better than Stafford when he got the chance to play. Stafford made some improvements later in the year; but, when you throw twice as many INT.'s as TD's, there's a lot of room for improvement, and you better make some. Receivers dropped a lot of passes, and that accounts for part of his poor completion percentage; but, his INT.'s were almost always bad choices.

Tim Tebow -- Big man off campus
The nation's best QB has turned the high school he doesn't attend into a football powerhouse.

Jemele Hill | Sentinel Staff Writer

From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

-- Luke 12:48

First thing they notice is, Tim Tebow is white.

Ten thousand Filipinos sit in an auditorium ready to hear this young, white American with a gentle smile and kind eyes.

He says he has brought hope. Says he can tell them where to find faith. The Filipinos sit in awe because most have never seen an American, much less a white person.

Then, in a sweet, confident tone, the high school senior tells them about Jesus. Tells them they can be renewed if they believe. And they absorb every word. When the American is done, 8,000 want to know this Jesus.

The 18-year-old goes to a prison that houses the biggest drug lord in the city, to his father's orphanage in Mindanao, to scores of schools with the same message. He sometimes spreads the gospel for 16 hours a day. He rides in a rickety jeep up hills for hours to towns he can't pronounce. He lives on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chicken and rice and protein bars for 17 days.

During his trip to the Philippines this summer, Filipinos constantly asked Tim Tebow for his autograph just because he was American. They don't know they might have collected the signature of a future NFL star.

Tim preached about a Christian resurrection in the Philippines, but thousands of miles away on another continent, Tebow leads a different kind of conversion at Ponte Vedra Beach's Nease High School.

Once a dilapidated football program with a shabby weight room, no freshman program and a long history of losing, the St. Johns County school has morphed into power with Tebow, a left-handed genius who is rated as the best high school passing and running quarterback in the nation.

The plan always was to build Nease's football program, but Tim's dominance accelerated the process.

Today, Nease's football budget is $130,000, up from $40,000. Another $180,000 has been poured into upgrading the weight room. This year 167 players showed up for tryouts. They were lucky to get a quarter of that before Tim arrived.

"We were extremely weak," said Bernie Sanders, the president of the Nease Golden Panther Booster Club. "It wasn't even up to most Pop Warner teams."

Nease's profile as a football school has undergone a dramatic change. The Panthers were 2-8 and 3-7 in the seasons before Tim got there and hadn't qualified for the district playoffs since 1994.

With Tim, they are 16-7 with an appearance in the regional championship.

Expectations have soared for Nease football, which is ranked No. 6 in Class 4A. In fact, they are so high Nease the school makes its nationally televised debut in a road game at noon today against traditional power Hoover (Ala.) High on ESPN -- the first time a high school game has been televised on the network.

"We're not trying to get all the glory," Tim said. "We're just trying to win a state championship."

His school day begins the same way each morning. He reads his Bible for a half-hour, reciting the three scriptures that define his life -- Luke 12, verse 48; Matthew 23, verses 11 and 12; and Proverbs 27, second verse.
He checks his planner, where his mother, Pam, has detailed his lessons for the day. He learns history, chemistry and algebra like any other high school student. This week, she used flash cards to make sure Tim knew the periodic table.

He spends most of his day totally segregated from the Nease student body -- the same group that chants his name during and after games.

Yet the Tebows' learning center/apartment has become the source of controversy.

Tim has been home-schooled since kindergarten. His four other siblings were also home-schooled. But the Tebows' permanent home is in Jacksonville, which is where the majority of home schooling took place before Tim came to Nease.

How can this be?

To understand why a high school star has two residences, understand the Tebows are devout Christians who believe the only way their children would learn certain values was if they instilled them.

"You have to start early with your children," Pam said. "You can't decide in high school, `Oh, we want him to have good character.' "

Tim first played high school football at Trinity Christian in Duval County, where the Tebows' family farm is located. They played him at tight end and defensive end. He wanted to play quarterback. His family wanted him to play quarterback.

His father, Bob, knew in the early stages that his son would be a terrific quarterback. When Tim was 4, Bob's palms started stinging from tossing the football with him.

The Tebows took Tim out of Trinity Christian and went looking for a program that would let Tim play quarterback.

They checked out a number of schools before their search led them to the guidance counselor's office at Nease.

Nease? The perennial basement team?

Craig Howard, Nease's then-new coach, was the one responsible for Tim's arrival at Nease. He's been coaching for more than 30 years, spending half of those years at the college level.

His offense was cookie cutter to the one used by Meyer at Utah. Howard promised Tim he could throw until his arm melted.

"We just hit it off from Day 1," Howard said. "I love Tim like a son."

Tim's move to Nease wasn't viewed innocently -- at least not after Tim hit the field and showed he could make any throw and had a 40-yard dash time hovering around 4.6 seconds.

When Tim transferred to Nease, a home-schooled student could play at any school in St. Johns as long as they lived in the county. The Tebows followed the rule by renting an apartment in the county.

There was grumbling once Tim's talents became known, and the Tebows fought the perception they used the rules to their own advantage.
"Their parents are following the rules," said Joseph Joyner, superintendent of St. Johns County School District. "You're always going to get people who criticize someone who is successful. You're always going to get people that try to find something negative."

Nease people see it as sour grapes. They say Tim's transfer wouldn't have raised an eyebrow if he weren't a five-star recruit and Nease was still a fledgling football team.

"We were the homecoming team for everybody," Sander said. "You scheduled Nease for that because you know you're going to win."

When you're good, everything comes under attack. And Tim's home schooling was no exception.

Tim is a B student. And yes, his mother administers his grades and his tests -- so you can guess what the whispers are about.

Overlooked is that three of the Tebow children, who also were taught by the same woman, have graduated college and another is an engineering student at Florida. And Tim achieved the required SAT score for college athletes as a sophomore.

"People try to cause trouble for us," Tim said, "but we try not to worry about it. We know we're doing the right thing."

"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips." -- Proverbs 27:2

C'mon, Tim, just take a little credit. Just get a little bigheaded.

"We're just trying to make this year better than last," Tim said. "We've got a lot of good players in the program."

You mean the seven teammates who might not have had Division I scholarships if the college coaches that came to see you didn't notice them?

"They got the scholarship because they put in the hard work," Tim said.

Try to get Tim to say he's the toughest person on Nease's team because he played three quarters against Menendez with a broken leg in 2003. Try to get him to call himself brilliant because he broke Anquan Boldin's state record for total offense with 5,630 yards last season.

Try to get him to admit he's the perfect weapon because of his 46 touchdown passes last year. Try to get him to puff his chest because ESPN is filming a documentary on him that will air around National Signing Day in February.

For someone else, it might be hard to stay humble.

For Tim, life it's not because his life is geared around humility and service.

His father, a full-time evangelist with his own ministry, and his mother demand no less That's why he's taken three trips to the Philippines. That's why his parents made him chase cows in 95-degree heat on the family farm, and won't let him out of his other chores no matter how many Elite 11 camps he attends.

"We kept him place," said Peter, Tim's older brother.

You wonder if Tim will stay this way, if a year from now he'll still be the same boy brought to tears when his dog, Otis, was hit so hard by a car around the farm it broke some of the animal's teeth in half.

A year from now will he still be reading his Bible every morning? Will he still believe in saving himself until marriage?

"People have talked to me about that already," Tim said. "Hopefully, I'll be able to say no and stick to my faith."

Much was given to Tim. Much was expected. Much has been delivered.

Everybody should remember that Tim Tebow was the recruit that comes along just once in three or four years. This guy is destined to do well at Florida. His character, attitude, ability, and experience all indicate that he will meet expectations. Florida is lucky that Tim wanted to be a Gator! (I'm glad he's not on our schedule this year.)
