With these favorite/ most memorable game threads I thought I would go the other way....What was the most heartbreaking game you have witnessed?

From recent memory I would have to go with either the 2005 Auburn game in Athens when they won at the end of the game on that long pass play...or the 2004 Tennessee game in Athens when we were coming back and on the last play of the game, for the win, Pope runs the wrong route and we lose

As far as games I've been to probably the Arkansas game from 2002-2003 (I believe) in which Bama went up about 28-0 and then wound up losing in 2 or 3 overtimes. That walk back to the car sucked.

You have about two decades worth of Florida games. Pick one.

Ohio State vs. Michigan State 1998 - Lost NC for us that year but we beat Michigan. Damn Nick Saban!

Witnessed in person, or just the most heartbreaking game in general?

The most heartbreaking game that I actually attended was in 1999 in B'ham when Bama lost to Louisiana Tech on a last-minute TD pass. Tech had some backup QB in the game because the starter was hurt, and it was a 4th down, I believe. We were just one play away from avoiding an embarrassing defeat, but the QB lobbed the 4th down pass to the back corner of the endzone where the WR, built like a beanpole, pulled down the pass in double-converage. The La Tech sideline erupted in celebration. Other than that, Legion Field was dead-quiet. I just sort of sat iin shock for about 10 minutes. It took a while for it to sink in.

I believe it was '02 in Athens, 4th and 15, our corner falls and Michael Johnson is wide open for the W with 30 seconds left.

Auburn led 59:30 of that game, but lost in the end on a 4th and 15....

In person:

Clemson 63 - USC 17. (2003) I know heartbreakers are typically late/close losses, but this one almost destroyed all my optimism that the rough season was a fluke and next year would be better (though it was).

Tennessee 17- USC 14 (2000) We could all taste victory....then Travis Henry singlehandedly beat us with a long drive late in the 4th quarter.

On TV:

Florida game this past season. Why do we have to keep discussing such games? Everytime I come close to purging that day from memory another topic reminds me of it. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go make an emergency call to my therapist.

In person the "Earthquake game" Auburn-LSU in BR in 1988. A typical Dye era Defensive struggle. W/ a 6-0 lead w/ about a minute left, we were already celebrating in the stands and I suppose our Stout D that had shut LSU down the entire game was busy celebrating too because Hodson hit some "coonass" WR accross the middle and then the beer bottles of piss started flying at our heads. Like one of my old coaches used to say "it aint far from the palace to the sh#t house!" What really sucks is that was our only regular season loss that year.

Well, this isn't from my team or the SEC, but watching Boise State come back and beat Oklahoma with all the gimmick plays must have crushed the life out of Sooner fans. That is also on my top 5 list of most exciting bowl games. That last sneak statue of liberty for the 2-point conversion was amazing. Hell, that whole last drive by Boise State was one of the most incredible moments in all of sports, in my opinion. Down by 7, 4th and 18 from the 50. 15 yard pass, a lateral, and a tying TD as time expired. Then they give the lead right back, as Peterson runs the first play in for a TD in OT. Then Zbransky hits a WR for a TD on another 4th down play. Then the SOL behind the back for the win in OT. Unbelivable. Oklahoma fans thought they had it won when BSU had a 4th and 18 from the 50 in regulation. Then they thought they had it won with AP's TD run. Then they thought they would go into another OT, at least, after another miracle 4th down TD. And lost. This, after overcoming an 18 point deficit, in the first place. And, to little ol' BSU.

It was Boise State that I was referring to as being up by 18. They were up by that much, only to see Oklahoma come back and take the lead. Sooner fans were probably going bonkers by that time, thought they had the game won twice after the comeback, only to lose like they did. Had to hurt.

Wisconsin-LSU 2004 (Bowl)

LSU played Iowa in the 2004 capitol one bowl, not Wisconsin. Drew Tate threw the game winning bomb. I thought for sure that game was won by LSU.

The most heartbreaking game to watch would be the UAB game in 2001. It helped that we went on to win the SEC that year.

Hands Down--1997 Iron Bowl

We had the damn thing won, and it should have been our first win at Jordan-Hare. All we had to do was run out the clock. We had the ball in our territory. It was third and 4, with about a minute to go. Anyone with more than two functioning brain cells calls a running play. Either you get it, or you punt them deep into their own territory.

That jackass OC Bruce Arians calls a swing pass to Ed Scissum, who got hammered after catching the ball and fumbled, allowing Auburn to kick the go ahead FG. Ed was absolutely devastated. On the ensuing kickoff, Auburn squib kicked, Scissum got it, and was so determined to make up for the fumble that it took half the Auburn team and a 15 yard facemask to bring him down. We were able to get in range for a 50+ yard FG to win, but it was short.

After the game, Dubose said he was unaware of the play call, which, come to think of it, is a pretty good summation of his entire HC tenure at Bama.

The Stoernover without a doubt. Arkansas is 8-0 and has to only burn 3 minutes off the clock to beat Tennessee at Neyland stadium to go 9-0. QB Clint Stoerner stumbles and uses the ball to brace himself and fumbles. Tennessee scores with seconds left and goes on to win the National Championship. The fumble stumble will haunt UA football history for ever.

They didnt recover from that loss and lost close games to Miss. State and Michigan in the citrus bowl afterwards. Stoerner got some payback the next year by throwing a winning TD against Tennessee but the stakes were not as high.

I think you mean Iowa instead of Wisconsin, Geaux. But those Big Ten teams are all alike (big and slow), so I can see how it's easy to get them confused. The Tennessee-LSU game of '05 was definitely a huge upset, considering the circumstances involved. I'm going to go with LSU-UF instead of '06 instead of LSU-Auburn, though. The Auburn game wasn't so much heartbreaking as it was rage-inciting. We went into the Florida game having found out that Auburn had just lost to Arkansas and that left the west wide open. We all thought that LSU was going to come out and dominate that game. It started that way, then after the dropped punt it all fell apart. Very heartbreaking.

Live and in person - 1968 Ole Miss at LSU when Archie Manning drove Ole Miss to the winning TD in the last minute. But on the other end of the emotion spectrum LSU beat Ole Miss after time had expired in 1972, Bert Jones to Brad Davis for the tying TD on a play that started with :01 second on the clock (we ran two plays in the last 4 seconds) and then the PAT for the winning point! And I was there for both games.

via TV - 2002 LSU vs Arkansas in Little Rock (on CBS) when Arkansas drove down and scored in the last minute to win the SEC West berth in the SECCG. If LSU had stopped the Hogs, LSU would have gone for the 2nd straight year.

For me for PSU it was 2005 against Michigan. MRob led his team to score with less than a minute left and I was pumped thinking we will win. Well then PSU kicks to Breaston who gives them good field position. After a bad call on a Avant catch that he was clearly out of bounds and the fact that Carr complained for 2 more seconds left Michigan had the ball at the 10 yard line with 1 second left. As Henne hit Manningham in the endzone, I just fell to the floor and layed there for 5 minutes.

Then after the season I looked back at that game and if those 2 damn seconds weren't added to the clock PSU would have won and would have been 12-0.

In person? Easily Arkansas vs Texas in 2004. We shouldn't have even been in that game to contend, but the team played harder than they ever did and I thought we should have won it. Matt Jones fumbled on the 8-yard line with less than a minute left and we lost 22-20. I almost felt like crying after that one. I hate Texas so badly.

On TV? Probably this year versus LSU. I finally decided Darren McFadden is the greatest Razorback ever to put on the pads. Not only was it so close, but I also realized with pure sickness all that optimism was over and the BAD days were a comin'.

Worst one ever for Arkansas? Easily 1969 Arkansas-Texas. Lost 15-14. I wasn't even close to being born, but that was the day Arkansas football died forever.

The 2005 Georgia loss hurt, but that day I realized we had something special in Darren McFadden and Felix Jones. One of the few losses I smiled after.
