Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Former boxing champion Diego "Chico" Corrales died Monday in a motorcycle accident. He was 29 years old.

"He always cared about the fans and gave them their money's worth," promoter Gary Shaw said on his website. "He was a true warrior. He was what boxing stood for, and what boxing is all about."

Corrales died two years to the day after one of the greatest fights in recent memory. On May 7, 2005, he posted a 10th-round TKO of Jose Luis Castillo at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas for the WBC lightweight title.

In that infamous 10th round, Corrales was twice knocked to the canvas before a stunning turnaround that forced referee Tony Weeks to stop the fight in the final minute of the round.

Castillo would get his revenge in a rematch five months later and Corrales never recovered. He failed to make weight for his next fight in October of 2006, a loss against Joel Casamayor, then moved up in weight six months later in a loss to Joshua Clottey.

After the unanimous decision against Clottey in April of 2007, Corrales didn't fight again.

Corrales finished his career with a record of 40-5 with 33 knockouts. He won his first 33 fights before a loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the WBC super featherweight title in January of 2001.

Sad story. I really liked Corrales.

Very sad news indeed. Corrales was always ok in my book but after the first fight with Castillo(even though the fight should have been stopped), no one could deny the heart of Corrales. Big loss for the boxing world.
