I hate the Yankees too, but they won't stay in the cellar. They pull this every year. Torre understands the importance of momentum in baseball and always puts half of his pitching rotation on the DL in the first half of the year for hangnails and sprained pinky toes.

Yall can hope that the yankees will suck. Oh yeah I forgot they still have 26 rings, and your mighty teams have what like 2 or 3 or probably NONE! The yanks are down because of injuries on their pitching staff and when Wang, Pavano, and Mussina get back in full form yankees will be back once again. I dont know how many of you follow baseball but this very well happened two years ago when they plugged in 19 different starters over the course of the year, and oh may I remind you they did win the divison. You guys have hope that the yankees will be down but dont get your hopes up.

I'm not telling you to like them...I'm telling you don't get happy because they are doing bad.

They haven't won a ring since 2000 because that was the last time they did it the right way. They got greedy and wanted to keep winning immediately rather than stabilizing the franchise. They tried to buy championships with high-priced free agents but that rarely works ('97 Marlins is the only example I can think of). Most importantly they have tried to do it with offense and everyone knows it's pitching that wins championships. Steinbrenner has finally realized he doesn't really know what he's doing and Cashman is trying to stabilize the franchise again.

Cash is actually doing a pretty good job...the problem is that time is running out. All their stars are in their 30s. Yes they have a couple of very good young players but Cano, Wang, etal are not the type to carry a team to a championship. Yanks fans are gonna have to be patient, because if they don't win another ring in the next two years it might be awhile.

Really the only thing that scares me about the Yanks is they've purposely positioned themselves to throw $180+ million at Johan Santana after the '08 season. The Red Sox are working to do the same, but I really hope he stays with the Twins. I'm sick of the arms race the Red Sox have decided to take part in. It's bad for the game.

As for the assertion that the Yanks do this every year so they'll be okay....they haven't lost 7 in a row and been in last place this late in a season since '95 before Torre was here and before the Devil Rays even existed. Mo got the save yesterday, but when they turned the camera to the Yanks dugout everyone was staring at the ground. That Yankee confidence is gone for now.

Also of note...the NY media was going crazy Friday saying that if the Sox swept the Yanks Torre was gone on Monday morning. Quite a soap opera building.

The Red Sox are tied for the best record in baseball, and the offense is struggling mightily. Manny is sub .200, JD is struggling now, Ortiz has been a double play machine this week. More evidence that it's PITCHING that leads a team to the top and the Sox statistically have the 2nd best pitching staff in the majors.

I think the sox take the division this year. Yankee$ will be fighting for a wild card spot.

That might be the case Gator but I remember last year when this happened and EVERYONE said the same thing you are saying now. That probably will be true...but I'm not buying it yet.

I'm tickled to death they are in last. I hate the Yankees. Mainly because I think Steinbrenner is a total a$$ and all of their players are way overpaid.

You cant spell yankee$ without the $$$ thats for sure.
I like teams who can actually win using their farm system. Yank$ think they can buy a World championship every year.
It makes me sick

Haha, you gotta love the Yankees. They signed Roger Clemens today to a 1yr $28 million deal. That's right, $28 million. Now to be fair, it's really a prorated salary, so they're ONLY going to be paying him $19+ million for 4 months of baseball.

why would you "gotta love the Yankees" because they are willing to out-spend everyone else in order to get who they want for their team? If I'm not mistaken, that practice is one of the main reasons why most people hate the Yankees......

I'm not surprised that NY got Clemens. I think the only reason he would go to either Boston or NY was if either just paid him a ton of money and give him an offer he can't refuse. If Boston offered him more $$ than NY was willing to offer, he'd be a Red Sox right now. Boston has a better chance of making the postseason than NY does, and one pitcher is not going to solve the Yankees pitching issues (IMO).

sorry, i thought the fact that most do hate the yankees would make it obvious that i was being sarcastic.

as for Boston, it sounds like they were offering $18 million prorated but they wanted him to wait until the end of june....so really they were only offering him 9 million bucks of real cash.

i'm not gonna do the math but i'm interested to see what the Yanks luxury tax amount ends up being next winter. since they're already over the limit this will add over $10 million to whatever the tax amount was going to be.

Those damn Yankee$ are charging... If they stay hot I don't know who will stop them.. they have been at or close to -300 favorites in most games they have played lately. unbelievable. Just hit the switch and they are playing ball again. I wish Matt Stairs would have beaten Clemens tail in Toronto

i was driving back from DC yesterday and listening to ESPN radio. they mentioned that since the all-star break there are 5 yankees in the top 13 of OPS in the AL. that's absurdly good and a pace they're unlikely to keep up...especially with the schedule getting tougher for them. that being said you have to bet on them making the playoffs now whether it be the East or Wild Card slot. their pitching is still suspect though so i anticipate another playoff appearance but another year without a title.
