USC's Boyd under investigation in connection with shooting
By JOSEPH PERSON - jperson @thestate.com
Cory BoydThe Richland County sheriff's department has interviewed South Carolina senior tailback Cory Boyd and several other Gamecocks' players as part of its investigation of a weekend shooting at a Columbia nightclub.
Chris Cowan, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, said a witness told authorities that Boyd was involved in the incident, which took place around 1 a.m. at a private club at 7201 Columbia Mall Blvd., Suite 169. There were no injuries, according to Cowan.
"It's still under investigation to determine whether he was there or involved," said Cowan. Cowan said several USC players, whom he would not identify, were at the club. According to an incident report, witnesses said there were gang members present.
USC coach Steve Spurrier said he was aware of the investigation, and had spoken to Boyd about the incident. "I'm always concerned when they go to nightclubs," Spurrier said today. "They've heard me talk about guns and nightclubs. If they want to go there, if they want to get in trouble, then they'll pay the consequences if they're guilty."

This is obviously a wait and see situation. A football player stands out in a crowd so Boyd may have been there at the time of the shooting but not involved. Obviously if he or any of the others were really involved in a frickin shooting then we all say 'sayonara.'
Ignoring football for a second...it's really disturbing how the gang population has increased exponentially over the past 5+ years. My sister was in law school around the time it was starting and she would tell me how her professors were desperately trying to get the police and city to act on it before it got out of control. But that would cost money on an issue that wasn't a big problem yet, and now look where we are. I think '06 was a record homicide year in Columbia proper.
Oh and for any recruits that may be reading this....none of the violence was anywhere near campus so no need to worry about that. The police makes sure that area is safe but unfortunately have let the projects (which are miles away from campus) police themselves for too long.

(Columbia) - The Richland County Sheriff's Department is investigating a shooting near Columbia Place that may have involved senior tailback Cory Boyd and other Gamecock football players.
No charges have been filed in the case, and no arrests have been made.
Deputies responded to 201 Columbia Mall Boulevard Suite 169 around 12:45 Sunday morning, to hundreds of people running from the scene and shots being fired.
The owner of the building, Patricia Thompson, rented out the building for a large Omega Psi Phi party.
Investigators say the incident began when some gang members had a confrontation with USC Football players. Deputies say according to witnesses, a man identified as Cory Boyd fired a gun into the air. Investigators say the gang members retaliated, and fired shots at the players. Deputies say people began running away and "total chaos erupted."
Investigators say they found marijuana residue, tobacco shavings and the odor of burnt marijuana. They say there also was a broken window at the scene

From what I've heard, Cory Boyd was at the party, but was not involved. I have heard however that Brandon Isaac was punched in the altercation

We seriously need to keep our football players in a bubble or something. I know this was probably not their fault, but they've gotta know that they're going to have a target on their backs...especially out at a club. I wish Spurrier would set an earlier curfew. I realize their college students, and grown men, but they've got to know by now to just stay in

Apparently Boyd and Brinkley work as bouncers at some club and their was incident. From everything I've heard there is no reason to believe that the two are anything other than witnesses at this point.

I've heard more or less the same. In fact, I haven't heard Brinkley's name as much or more than I've heard Brandon Isaac and Matt Raysor's regarding all of this. I heard someone tried to start something with Raysor...why I don't know, the dood definitely isn't the smallest on our team.
We'll see, we'll see....somehow the events of this day make it hard to even care how this story shakes out.
Yea I've heard jasper and cory were bouncers checking id's, and denied the shooter access to the club. There was an altercation where Isaac was punched, and Isaac and Raysor are being questioned further.

I hope Boyd and Brinkley come off clean. I think USC will have a great chance to make a run at the SEC East Title next year with both of these guys on board. Plus I hate to see any team lose players do to crime-related incidents. I really hope these guys are innocent, they are both very fun to watch on the field and make SEC football that much more exciting.

That said, if the allocations hold up does this put USC on the board for the Fulmer Cup?

I've since heard that the 'altercation' everyone's referring to involving a gun wasn't even at the club Boyd & Brinkley worked. The cops questioned Boyd because he had had contact with the guy earlier in the evening.
As for Raysor & Isaac, I have no clue....but I'm sure we'll all find out soon enough.

W-B,
Can you provide any details?
Thanks

This is a wait-and-see situation, as was pointed out at the beginning of this thread. For a while, it seemed as though things looked very grim, but everything I've read for about the past two hours has been favorable. There was a team meeting held at 5:00 today, and it seems as though Coach Spurrier is standing by his players until he is forced to do otherwise, just as he did in the Garcia case.
There is definite cause for concern, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it tonight. This is a developing situation, but I've heard nothing but positives for the past two hours. This happened about 15 to 20 minutes off campus, and it sounds to me like all of this was started and carried out by the bloods. The Brinkleys would probably rank in the top 10 on our football team in terms of character, and Boyd could be put in the same category, even though he made a huge mistake two years ago. I just don't see them as guys who are carrying guns with them.
Just be patient. Justice will be served. I think they are clean, but only time will tell.

Ive heard that Matt Raysor was the Bouncer, and Isaac, Boyd and Brinkley were there as well. someone sucker punched Isaac and Boyd was attempting to keep it from blowing up into a huge brawl. in the light of the VT shootings we can all see what can happen when idiots get guns in there hands. im just thankful that no one was hurt in this incident. hopefully what i heard is the truth because losing any of those guys would be a huge blow to our season.

Is the Patricia Thompson that is listed in the police report and Moe Thompson's mother one and the same?

I don't think they are. The I/R said that Patricia Thompson owned or rented out the facility for the party and we all know that Moe's mom couldn't afford to do that.
The friggin gang trash is out of hand and it starts in the home. But that's another thread, I won't hijack this one with my stand on the soapbox.

"Rhett" is listed as the complainant on the I/R and is the one that pointed to "Cory Boy" as the initial shooter.

Whatever really happened, this is another sign that SOS should ban his players from going to clubs and bars. I went to USC and went out just about every weekend when I was there. I never had a problem like this. This is the 4th time in less than a year we've had a player with serious problems at a bar.

According to the article below, it was Moe Thompson's mother. Moe was there as well.
From the article:
This weekend’s party took place at a rental facility run by Trish Thompson, the mother of former USC football player Moe Thompson. Trish Thompson said Omega members approached her a month ago about renting the facility, located in a strip mall behind Columbia Place and known as “Carolina Athletics at Suite 169.”
Trish Thompson said fraternity members arranged for security at the party. She said she and her son were in attendance to oversee the function.

I'm sure The State will find a way to connect them together:
"In today's scrimmage, RB Cory Boyd - who's namesake was arrested by authorities for firing a firearm in a gang-related dispute - and teammate of Stephen Garcia - who was arrested twice in a two-week period - rushed for ......."

Our Cory Boyd has been questioned, has not been charged, but Spurrier said at the Gamecock meeting last night if he or anyone else who was there is guilty, they won't be here anymore. Period.

Supposedly this guy was already in jail the night of the incident and there are 2 different Cory Boyds involved in 2 different incidents that are totally unrelated. Just passing along what is being said on CockyTalk.
Update from WIS tonight... Brandon Isaac is now being questioned along with Cory Boyd. Looks like the rumor of Isaac getting punched might have some legs.

UPDATE: Sounds like good news.
WLTX-TV News, Weather, Sports for Columbia and the Midlands of South Carolina (http://www.wltx.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=48859)
(Sumter) - USC head football coach Steve Spurrier says running back Cory Boyd may not face charges in a recent shooting incident.
Spurrier made his comments Wednesday while speaking at the Gamecock Club in Sumter.
Spurrier told the crowd that although the investigation into last weekend's shooting continues, he thinks all indications look like Boyd could be cleared of being a person of interest.
Spurrier did say he'll wait unit the rest of the investigation has concluded.
Deputies responded to 201 Columbia Mall Boulevard Suite 169 around 12:45 Sunday morning, to hundreds of people running from the scene and shots being fired.
No one was hit by the bullets.
The owner of the building, Patricia Thompson, rented out the building for a large Omega Psi Phi fraternity party.
An incident report had said that a witness identified Boyd as being there and firing a shot, but that has not been confirmed by investigators.

This is good news, but I still think SOS needs to put in place a ban on bars and night clubs for the team. I don't know if it's a god complex or what, but our team is getting into way too trouble at these places.
