Hey all,

I didn't get to watch the game either, but I just read there were over 35k at WB today. Great job showing support to the team and building fund, Gamecock fans!

The new unis are awesome! ESPNU announced the crowd at 40,000. Who knows? Mitchell was a no-show. All in all, pretty boring. B-52 and Davis weren't playing. Announcers picked us to finish tied for 3rd or 4th for '07. Tennessee or Georgia to take the east, Florida finishing 3rd or tied with us for 3rd. Auburn or Alabama taking the west with LSU finishing 3rd.

Beecher has a injured shoulder that he got by tackling a defensive player that just intercepted a pass from him earlier this week, maybe as far back as last Saturday's scrimmage. He will be OK, and will be back competing with the other QB's in the summer and for fall practice. During practices this week, they still utilized him as the holder for FG's, but kept him out of the 11 on 11 drills. He will be OK.....

At his press conference, Spurrier said he is very pleased with the defense. Said we were prepared for an 8 or 9 man rotation on the defensive line. He was not at all pleased with Mitchell. He said the goal for 2007 was to win the SEC, but said we should not be out bragging to anyone right now, because we were a long way off. He also said he hoped some of the freshmen receivers came in ready to play, and the main concern is the offensive line, or lack thereof.

Well you have to take all of that with a grain of salt.
I believe that I read that the teams were split up which means that the #1 OL was not playing as a single unit.
If so it should be expected that the D would dominate. OL always develop later than the DL, they have more assignments and need to practice as a unit to gel.
I think SOS just may be playing his cards close to the vest so to speak. I hope so. If that’s true, things aren't as bad as the may have looked to the fans and media.
Mitchell’s bad choices may be a catalyst for good things this fall, by giving him something to shoot for.
If not we may see a true freshmen come into the game against Georgia. I sure don't see a Ga 18-0 game again this year.

Spurrier didn't hide his disgust with Garcia's situation. He's p.o.'d Garcia wasted this entire semester and isn't getting reps with the team. "One more screw-up and he knows he's gone."

The way the teams were split up makes it tough to get a proper read on team play. But there is no excuse for Mitchell's sorry performance. He couldn't throw at all. Very disturbing.

I second your comments and opinions. I also like when Spurrier said of Garcia something like, "yeah, he should be fine as long as we don't have to go bail him out of the slammer." It is pretty obvious from what I have seen this spring the defensive line is going to be one of the best we have seen in a long, long time here. Perhaps ever. They are strong, quick, and deep. Like I have said since the first practice I saw. They look like an SEC defense.

As for Mitchell, I don't much know what to say, except what I already have. He always stinks in spring practice. I remember SOS's first year here, I watched him in practice and thought, "we may not win a game this year". Not sure what it is about him. I also didn't care for what I thought was a somewhat uncaring attitude about it to the media afterwards. Not the most well spoken young man you will ever here anyway. And, has a mug only a mother could love!!

This is what bothers me the most about him. Spurrier nailed him on this from day 1 and I haven't noticed much improvement. Without Rice's ability to make quick adjustments on routes, I'm not sure what we'll be able to do. Like SOS said, we've got to get a better OL and hopefully some of the (incoming) #1 recruiting class will be able to work with Mitchell's very average abilities. We really needed Garcia to work out this spring. He is a competitor and that's what we've be sorely missing, IMO, at QB.
