Stewart Mandel: Nick Saban isn't out to make friends, just win games (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/stewart_mandel/04/09/alabama/index.html) (04/09/2007)

Great stuff! It gets me excited, so I know what it must be doing for you Bammers. No doubt, Nick's the real deal in coaching. In the forseeable future, he may have Alabama football as dominant as it ever was. I like these statements from the article:

I left town certain of two things: That Nick Saban is every bit the jerk he's made out to be -- and that he's exactly what the doctor ordered for the Alabama football program.
After drifting in mediocrity for the better part of 15 years, enduring two rounds of NCAA sanctions and cycling through five different coaches this decade alone, the SEC's most storied program finally has a strong, unquestioned leader.

That is exactly the Nick Saban that I remember from LSU. He's picking right up where he left off; great news for Bama, but not such good news for the rest of the SEC.

About the only thing I can say with 100% certainty is you must be a complete SOB to survive as Alabama's head coach.

And it appears that Saban is a perfect match.

Saban is and thats what we needed. These players are seeing and feeling the things it takes to become a winner instead of whiners. If you cant cut it...SEE YA ! There will be alot of pizzas made before opening day.

Seriously speaking, Nick Saban is probably more in the mold of The Bear than any other coach that Alabama has had since his time. He is just what the doctor ordered to get the Bama football program back to prominence. Whether they will admit it or not, you know that Tubby and the boys down on the plains are having some serious concerns.

Well the Bear seemed like a nice enough guy but when it came down to it nobody, I mean nobody told him how to run his football program. That's the way Saban is so I think if the boosters and alumni just stat the hell out of his business he will do great things.

Someone please explain the making pizza phrase. I think it's referring to puking but I want to know for sure.

Why does he even have to be compared to the Bear? He's his own man. Let him just be Nick Saban for god's sake.

I just don't understand why you have to be an a--hole in order to coach a football team at a high level. Lots of coaches are both successful and personable (Meyer, Stoops, SOS, Caroll, JoePa, Bowden, etc.).

Ha! These two personable? They are both great coaches but, I would not go as far as personable.

Now I know you've been smoking. Meyer and Bowden are about as similar as Gandhi and Manson. Meyer's a cool, calm, and collected guy. He's extremely personable. You're just not going to see him giggling like a girl on the sidelines. He got plenty excited after the SEC and NC wins. There's a big difference between focus and freak us. He's meticulous, and strives for perfection. He doesn't actually relax until the game is over. Until then, he wants to see effort on every play; regardless of whether we've got the game in hand or not.

Geaux, you're right on target. The Bama players are going to, for the most part, hate his practices, but love the results. Probably a lot like the Bama players of old felt about the Bear. Those in Barn Country will never admit it, but the "Saban Factor" has certainly rained on their party in the state of Alabama. Saban was probably the last person they wanted Bama to pick up due to his success at LSU. Time will tell.

I can't speak for any other team, but at Alabama everybody and their grandmother knows how to coach championship football teams.

So if you happen to have a few million dollars to donate, you get to call plays at Alabama. It takes a real SOB (and a guaranteed contract) to push this nonsense outta the locker room.

Saban is an SOB. And with a $32 million guaranteed contract, he'll be Alabama's SOB for at least 6 years. Even at 6 years, the buy out is $9 million. That is the best job security money can buy.
