The early commitment total for LSU’s football program reached five Wednesday thanks to a pair of commitments from one family. LSU gained pledges from Franklinton’s brother duo of Brandon and Jhyrn Taylor — the younger brothers of current Tigers’ junior defensive back Curtis Taylor. The addition of Brandon and Jhyryn Taylor — both of whom are projected cornerbacks —give LSU four of its five commitments from the state of Louisiana, while the other — fullback/linebacker prospect Kellen Theriot of Bellaire, Texas — is originally from Scott and played for two seasons at Acadiana High.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Brandon Taylor, who is a year younger than Jhyryn, selected LSU over scholarship offers from Ole Miss, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Kansas State. He also received interest from Notre Dame. “He’s tough and explosive,” Franklinton football coach Shane Smith said. “It takes him one or two steps to hit top-level speed (4.45 in the 40-yard dash) and when he cuts, he’s able to maintain that high-level speed.”

Brandon Taylor has started for the past two years at Franklinton, starting at both tailback and wide receiver on offense and defensive back. He’s a two-time All-District 9-3A selection and second team choice on the Louisiana Coaches Association’s All-State team on defense. Taylor rushed 62 times for 564 yards and scored eight touchdowns. He also caught 10 passes for 205 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Defensively, he registered 30 solo tackles, three interceptions, two of which were returned for scores.

Jhyryn Taylor (6-0, 185) had offers from both LSU and Ole Miss, but was certain about his destination. “He never wavered from LSU,” Smith said. “He wanted to go to LSU.” Jhyryn Taylor has been an All-District 9-3A performer during his career for Franklinton, which finished 6-5 in 2006. He caught 40 passes for 650 yards and seven TDs. “He’s not quite as fast as his brother (Brandon), he’s got pretty quick feet which is important for a cornerback,” Smith said. “Like his brother, he also plays with a toughness and he will hit you.” (Credit: William Weathers, BR Adovocate)
