Spurrier questions players passion

By KENT BABB - kbabb@thestate.com

Steve Spurrier said he wants USC players to prove they enjoy playing football. Fifteen days into spring practice, the Gamecocks’ third-year coach is undecided on some players’ passion.

Spurrier said after the team’s Wednesday evening practice that he hopes to identify players who enjoy the game when the team has a scrimmage at Williams-Brice Stadium at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The scrimmage had been announced for Saturday, but the Gamecocks will take the weekend off for Easter.

They will not leave town before Spurrier sizes them up.

“I don’t understand some of them,” he said. “We’ve got what we’ve got. We’ll find those that like football and want to play — and aren’t afraid.”

Spurrier said he hopes Friday’s scrimmage, the team’s second of the spring, will simulate a game atmosphere.

“Our guys get nervous out there,” Spurrier said. “Get some people out there in the stands, get some real-looking referees and a few sports writers covering it and television boys, they get nervous.”

Two players who have proved themselves to Spurrier are cornerbacks Stoney Woodson and Carlos Thomas. Spurrier said the juniors, who struggled this past season, have proved they belong on what Spurrier expects to be an improved defense.

Meredith will play. Junior offensive tackle Jamon Meredith, who suffered a sprained ankle during Saturday’s scrimmage, will play Friday, Spurrier said.

“Yeah, he’s all right,” Spurrier said. “He’s not that bad.”

Meredith, who is expected to be the Gamecocks’ starting left tackle, hurt his left ankle when a teammate fell on his leg during an extra-point attempt Saturday. He wore a protective boot Monday and did not practice.

Geathers wants to add bulk. Freshman Clifton Geathers said he is unsatisfied with his weight, which he said is 275 pounds. Geathers, a highly recruited defensive end from Carvers Bay, said he hopes to add at least 20 pounds of muscle before USC’s first game, a Sept. 1 home contest against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Geathers, who is listed at 6-foot-7, said he also has plenty more on his agenda.

“I’ve got a lot of stuff to improve on,” he said. “I’ve got to basically just learn the plays and remember the plays. That’s the main thing.”

I haven't been paying attention to the practice reports this spring so I'm not really sure how individual players are doing. Anyone know which players Spurrier is referring to with this comment?

Not really sure. I have gone to a couple of practices, and they look pretty dang good to me. He has been irritated with the QB's a bit.

he's upset with the qb's and I think a little with the WR's. But mainly the QB's. He's already stated we'll probably be more of a rushing team.

Yeah, and for the Gator fans out there....we learned our lesson. Geathers is big, tall, and can jump. In other words, we're stealing your idea and planning to use him as our Jarvis Moss on the FG block unit.

I believe the reason Spurrier has made these comments is because in his first 2 years at USC, he really did not have big expectations for his teams. Sure, he felt they could win more than lose, and go to a bowl, but I'm sure he feels at the very least that any team he coaches - with very little talent or depth - can reach those goals.

I think this season, he feels that USC can contend for greater things, and he wants them to contend - THIS YEAR, and not look back with regrets. He has already publicly stated that he feels USC should compete for the EAST this season......before long (maybe starting next season) he'll start EXPECTING the Gamecocks to compete for the EAST, and even for the SECC. But it has to start somewhere, and usually with learning how to walk before you learn how to run.

I think he just want's his team to get fired up, and start accepting no less than the utmost efforts from themselves and their fellow teammates. He is seeing some players going through the motions or treating practice as if it's a job or a burden, when they should be excited about what the future holds for them, and stoked to make it happen. That excitement should show up on the field, and it's not like Spurrier thinks it should.

I'm sure by the fall practices, as we start getting closer to those season-opening kick-offs, CSS, Nix and the others will have the team fired up ans ready to go.

I agree lacene. It takes more than capabilities to win championships. Our players need to be fired up about playing if they wanna make any noise this year. It's that little extra effort that will and does make a difference.

I'm stealing this image from cockytalk. They have some really extensive spring coverage for any of you Gamecock fans interested.

I think thats really is way of motivating the players who want to play and those that don't.

Alabama didn't offer Smelley a scholarship because Mike Shula thought that a kid with a Florida Gators mailbox was going to come to Alabama. Did he close his eyes when he pulled in the driveway???

Alabama did indeed go after Smelley towards the end, when their other golden boy recruits went elsewhere. It was too little, too late.
