Sources: Smith to leave Kentucky for Minnesota

By Andy Katz
ESPN.com (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2808406)

Tubby Smith will leave Kentucky to take over the head coaching job at Minnesota, multiple sources told ESPN.com's Andy Katz.

Smith had four years remaining on his Kentucky contract.

Smith has met with Kentucky players and Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart. Smith is expected to fly to Minnesota later Thursday afternoon.

Smith called former Minnesota coach Dan Monson early Thursday and told him he was accepting the job. Minnesota is expected to pay Smith $1.8 million per year.

Wow. I gotta say Kat fans unless you can get a quality, big name, good recruiting coach to replace him, this may not be good news. At least as far as your short term situation is concerned.

However this should give us much to talk about this spring.

Word is they are going after Billy D and Calipari first.

HOLY SHAT. WILDCAT NATION, EXPLAIN YOURSELVES.

Either there's silence among the fans in Lexington or there's public cheering from the blogs to the radio shows. I wonder what Alan Cutler's gonna say about all this on his radio show.

after winning the NC, and establishing the Gator's program to elite status, I wonder if the prestige of the Kentucky program will be enough to lure Donavon away.....unless he has some dream of cementing his "legacy" by taking the storied program back to it's glory days.

However, Calipari is interesting. Memphis is certainly not Kentucky, and for him to get to the level of a Donavon or Smith, he will need to lead a program like Kentucky to championships......he looks to be a better bet, to me.

Agree. I could envision Calipari leaving Memphis (and a weak conference) to go to UK. However, it would shock me if Billy Donovan left Florida. With the success Donovan has brought Florida basketball, the prestige of the UF job is equal to or exceeds the UK job IMO.

However, all this is purely speculation at this point as Florida and Memphis are still in the hunt for the NC in the Big Dance.

Tubby let the quality of assistants on his staff slip quite a bit over time. He was told the staff would be replaced and it was up to him whether he would make the changes or go with the staff. To his credit, loyalty-wise, he supported his assistant coaches and chose to leave.

This has been awhile in coming. Tubby is a very good coach, but he does not enjoy recruiting and he didn't surround himself with good recruiters. He was given "encouragement" to correct that two years ago and did not take the needed steps to do so. The media won't spin it this way, but this move is much less the result of recent records and more about the steadily declining level of talent. Yes, the two are directly related, but Tubby would still have his job if he'd just put more into recruiting the last couple of years.

Mitch Barnhart wanted to keep Tubby, but knew he'd likely balk at cleaning house, so the groundwork toward bringing in a new coach was begun some time ago. Whoever comes in is unlikely to turn things around next year though. Talent-wise, UK looks to be in the "just above .500" range in 2007-2008, and it would take Randolph Morris returning, no other defections among the top seven returning players, and signing both Patrick Patterson and Jai Lucas to change that. I don't know if we can count on all those things happening. And even if they all do happen, next year will be a rebuilding year.

But you can bet on UK being back soon. This is the first big step toward that.

Speaking for the Big Blue Nation... Best of luck, Tubby. We couldn't have asked for a better representative of the university, but we demand better results on the court.

Well, this should make 5* recruit, Patrick Patterson's decision a lot easier. Donovan's been pushing hard for him because he's the last big-man game-changer not signed. Florida, Kentucky, and Duke were all in the running. There was even a rumor earlier this week that he'd committed to UF. The family backed away from that; but, I can't help but think maybe Tubby told him he was leaving so he wouldn't base his decision on who had recruited him at UK. Maybe Tubby didn't want him going to UK, when he knew he was leaving. Everybody thinks it's either UF or UK.

After careful consideration, I had to decline the offer to coach both sports.
