STARKVILLE — Dietric Slater, a starting forward on the Mississippi State basketball team, was arrested Wednesday by Starkville police and charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance, driving on a suspended driver’s license and not wearing a seat belt, police chief David Lindley said.

Slater posted $1,040.50 bond at the Starkville police station and was released, Lindley said.

Lindley said Slater allegedly had one pill of the prescription drug Xanax in his possession. He said Slater was arrested at approximately 5:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Asked about rumors of the incident during a teleconference this morning to preview his team’s second-round NIT game against Bradley on Saturday, MSU coach Rick Stansbury Stansbury said there was little to the situation.

“All it was is he got pulled over with a suspended driver’s license that really wasn’t suspended,” Stansbury said. “They had taken care of it. He was immediately released after they found out all the truth to the situation.”

The Clarion-Ledger obtained the details surrounding the arrest from Lindley shortly after Stansbury’s teleconference.

Stansbury was conducting a team practice and not immediately available for further comment.

Slater, a senior, is the Bulldogs’ third-leading scorer and rebounder. He averages 9.9 points per game and 5.6 rebounds.

Slater missed the first 12 games of the season, under suspension for undisclosed violations of team rules.

Slater had only three points but was the team’s second-leading rebounder with seven in State’s 82-63 victory on Tuesday over Mississippi Valley State in an opening-round game of the NIT.

State takes a 19-13 record into Saturday’s game against Bradley. The game starts at 11 a.m. and will be televised by ESPN.
