DULUTH, Ga. — Survive and advance.
The LSU women’s basketball team managed to accomplish both after Friday’s roller-coaster ride through the quarterfinal round of the Southeastern Conference tournament against Ole Miss.
The fourth-seeded Lady Tigers overcame a sluggish start to nearly register a runaway victory before beating the fifth-seeded Lady Rebels, 52-46, at The Arena at Gwinnett Center.
“It’s very disappointing, that’s where discipline stuff comes in,” LSU All-American center Sylvia Fowles, who herself survived a late-game scare after falling on her left shoulder. “We have to have that swagger just to put people away.”
LSU (25-6) advances to face top-seeded Tennessee, an 81-63 winner over eighth-seeded South Carolina, in a semifinal at 5:45 p.m. today.
“What you’re reminded of is that Ole Miss is so aggressive,” LSU coach Pokey Chatman, referring to her team’s 18-point second-half lead. “You can’t for a second be soft with the basketball. They’ll claw and scratch. Any other team you get that 18-point lead it might be all right. We didn’t do a whole lot to help ourselves, but fortunately we finished it.”
