View Full Version : How the Crimson Tide Got its Name

thethird
02-16-2007, 03:38 AM
In early newspaper accounts of Alabama football, the team was simply listed as the "varsity" or the "Crimson White" after the school colors.

The first nickname to become popular and used by headline writers was the "Thin Red Line." The nickname was used until 1906.

The name "Crimson Tide" is supposed to have first been used by Hugh Roberts, former sports editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald. He used "Crimson Tide" in describing an Alabama-Auburn game played in Birmingham in 1907, the last football contest between the two schools until 1948 when the series was resumed. The game was played in a sea of mud and Auburn was a heavy favorite to win.

But, evidently, the "Thin Red Line" played a great game in the red mud and held Auburn to a 6-6 tie, thus gaining the name "Crimson Tide." Zipp Newman, former sports editor of the Birmingham News, probably popularized the name more than any other writer.

What's this thread about? It's in the trash talk forum, so I'm assuming there'll be some smack at some point. So far, all I've read is an informative article on the origin of UA's nickname. It's been posted before in the regular forums, and the only remarks were a lot of thanks from guys who didn't know where the name came from. Somebody's been taking trash-talking lessons from Vandy fans.:brick:

Nickname for the University of Alabama athletics teams.

The Crimson Tide soundly defeated Auburn today on the basketball court!

This one was my favorite. Of course I think AU beat UA on the basketball court this season.

They are buddy. You need to quit thinking otherwise. The balance of power in this state has shifted and its completely on Auburn's side. Quit living in the past, Tommy Tuberville is better than Bear Bryant and Brandon Cox is better Starr/Namath/Stabler combined. Get it straight before you post, geez.

I wonder what it's like to pull for a team with four different mascots?

The Plainsman, The War Eagle, The Tiger, and The Wingnut. All wonderful mascots, but for the love of football, pick ONE!!

 jk Having fun before I step on the death trap tomorrow. That's to say, I'm flying to Indiana tomorrow. Delta.........Hopefully the in-flight movie doesn't suck, if they even have one.

What is the derivation of the term, "Capstone?"
(Or, as The Barners and others say, "the Crapstone."

Just wondering.

"The Capstone"
The University of Alabama is often referred to as "The Capstone" by alumni and friends of the university. "The Capstone" is a nickname for The University of Alabama coined by former UA President G. H. Denny when he referred to the University as the “capstone of the public school system of the state” in 1913. Capstone means 'the top stone or high point.'

so just how did Auburn come up with so many nicknames? Was this similar to dirty businessmen hiding their laundered money from the taxman behind shell corporations and paper companies? The Auburn Athletic Department tells the NCAA investigator, "you must be here by mistake. You're investigating some team named the Tigers. We're the Damn War Eagles!"
