View Full Version : Is there any truth to Auburn giving out phony NC rings in 2004?

Did this really happen? And if it did, why? Auburn had a great season no doubt, 13-0. I have read lots of articles and rants about this accussation of phony ring giving, but know one really ever came out and said whether or not it is actually true. If it did happen I would like to see the ring. Please clarify.

Yes, and we did the same in 1993.

Man, that is f..ked up! I can understand giving the players something to remember their season, but that is inexcusable. And, in 1993 they were caught cheating! I'll tell you what that does. It cheapens all the accomplishments of legitimate National Champions. That is the most disrespectful thing I've heard in a long time. How can Auburn fans even wonder why fans of other schools hate them so much, or why they don't get any respect from other conferences and CFB, in general? People don't dislike AU because they're afraid of the competition; they dislike them for all the other extra-curricular activities outside the actual games; like this. If you go to the Swamp, you'll see that they only say "Best in SEC" for the years we won the conference while on probation. It doesn't say SEC Champions. What a disgrace.:thumbsdow :blackeye: on the conference.

The rings for the players say National Champs, but for the fans and everyone else, we simply call them "Perfect Seasons". Go to Jordan-Hare next time you're in Auburn and you'll see that the flags we have flying say "Perfect Season 1993" and "Perfect Season 2004". The rings are strictly a players thing that was done by the coaches. Everything else, we refer to those 2 seasons as "Perfect Seasons".

I guess it is true. I wonder if Boise State are going to claim people's champions this year? Boise State seems pretty classy, I doubt they will.

It seems that Tommy Tuberville wanted to give his players an award for great seasons. Perhaps in his mind (with 2004, at least) he felt that Auburn was the NC. In any regards, He or no other members of those teams are running around claiming MNC's for their own for teams that finished with worse records than others, like a bunch of Bammers I know of....apparently it's been a common practice for Alabammer supporters to claim MNC's, and then tout them to others for years........that's far more disgraceful, IMO......

After ther Sugur Bowl Tubby told the media he didn't wnat to hear anyone say they weren't national champions. In fact go to Auburn's sports museum where they have space dedicated to 2004 they have a large framed copy of Eufala's city paper that says "NATIONAL CHAMPS!"

Well here's the thing with giving the players rings that say "NC" on it: They were not National Championions. Just like Boise State wasn't this year, Auburn or Utah in 2004, Marchall wasn't in 1999, Tulane wasn't in 1998, Penn State in 1994, Alabama in 1966, etc.
When Auburn went 11-0 in 1993 the players got rings that said "Best in the SEC" because they were record wise even if they could not play in the SECCG. Auburn in 2004 was SEC Champions and had a Perfect Season, not a National Championship season and their rings should have reflected that. They were not the first team to get screwed and their coach should have done SOMETHING about it other than say "We're gonna get NC rings just because I say we can."

Tubs made the call, he did it for the coaches and players. Like I said to you and everyone on here, we the fans call it a perfect season as does Auburn Athletics and Auburn University as a whole.

It's not that bad, IMO. I agree that maybe the wording on the rings shouldn't have said NC, but what the heck... they're unofficial anyhow (i.e. awarded by the coach) so it's not that big of a deal.
This is just another reason to show how sometimes great teams get the cold shoulder because of the way National Champions are determined for Div I-A college football. When you have 2-3 (or more) different bodies that award national championships, there's always going to be trouble. Heck, there's been past years that there have been 4+ national champions declared by the various bodies... that's where some of Alabama's came from. At least we don't declare some of the ones that were awarded by "lesser-known" bodies, but it still sucks to share an NC with other teams in the same year without actually having the teams play each other.
The BCS was supposed to solve this by having a single matchup between #1 and #2 for the championship game, but we saw those plans go to crap a few years ago when the Associated Press awarded USC a national championship even though LSU won the BCS NC game. I actually thought the same would happen to Auburn in 2005 that happened to USC, and they would have ended up getting the AP title. But unfortunately the media didn't agree.
I still think Auburn would have won the NC that year, or at least made it a much better game than Oklahoma did. That had to have been in the Top 5 for being the most boring NC game in the history of college football.
As others have stated in this thread, the school itself is not calling it a national championship... they are just advertising it as a perfect season. If the coaches want to treat the players like champions (without making it official for the school), then they have every right to do so. They could have easily been the best team in college football that year, but nobody ever had the chance to find out.

I have no doubt that while Bear didn't give rings to his players on the 1966 team, he too made sure they were known as champions. I haven't read the book on The Missing Ring but I'd imagine that's what Keith Dunnavant wrote.

When Auburn went undefeated, who was it? Oklahoma and USCw? I think the pundits said Auburn would get humiliated by either of those two teams. The media also said Auburn didn't belong in the BCS MNC game. They said that even though Auburn went undefeated in the SEC, they put the SEC down as a strong conference but not as strong as the folks in the SEC thought they were.
Hmmm. Sounds to me like you could have substituted Florida for Auburn in the above scenario and it would be 2007 (except for the undefeated part).
It seems to me that Florida may have benefited a little bit from Auburn getting screwed. The "pundits" had to know that the SEC deserved to prove them wrong and thankfully, Florida absolutely blew their opinions out of the water. Which should help every SEC Champion for the next few years.

With the BCS it seems whatever conference gets screwed one year doesn't get screwd the next time around. Unless you are the Big 12.

God I sure hope not.. I mean seriously, it would just be a black mark on the perfect and clean history of the "award" that is a mythical national championship. God forbid CTT has some rings made for a bunch of kids who played their hearts out all season long and got shafted by a terrible BCS system.
Anyone who came in this thread and is actually upset or thinks that CTT buying these rings as a personal gift to these players has had a negative effect on the way the national championship is looked at is PATHETIC. Not a single one of you would have the balls to look those kids in the eyes and spew the crap you are posting here. Absolutely pathetic.

BTW, the NCAA officially recognizes 17 Championiships for Alabama:
1925, 26, 30, 34, 41, 45, 61, 62, 64, 65, 66, 73, 75, 77, 78, 79, 1992.
"The Other Five" not recognized/claimed by the University of Alabama, are however recognized by the NCAA as legit championships.

I don't hate CTT for that. I've repeatedly said I'm grateful for the AU loss. Without it, we don't win the NC. I lost all respect for the man for a number of reasons. It doesn't even have anything to do with UF. He just strikes me as a wretched person. If he coached anywhere else, I'd think the same thing. I dislike Auburn because every time I've been to Jordan-Hare, I've been exposed to the nastiest, most hateful, most classless fans in CFB. That's my experience, and it's not an opinion or up for debate. Every time I've been there, those little white trash monsters destroyed my car. And for AUBleak, my girlfriend didn't leave me for an Auburn guy( if there is such a thing ). I left my wife, but not because she was a War-Stork. That was only one of her many character defects. All those AU students weren't very bright, though. The car was my wife's ( the AU fan ), and her brother's roommates ( students at AU ) did it. Those guys can't even get their vandalism right! So, while I take all opinions into account; you'll understand if I don't give much credence to those of " people " like Blake. AUChamps, I mean no offense to you and some of the other AU members. I appreciate much of what y'all have to say, including in this thread. But, I don't often hold my tongue when attacked by morons, for having an opinion. My opinion of CTT is fair game in this forum.
