View Full Version : A Better WR?

I was watching this video and starting trying to think of a better or more gifted WR in Bama history. Couldnt think of one, we have had some good ones with probally better stats, F Millons or D Palmer, but I am thinking more along the lines of hands, concentration, quickness, and sheer athletic ability. Then I started thinking about the SEC and eventually the entire NCAA. Still couldnt think of one, anyone else know of "A Better WR" to play college ball? And once again, I am not referring to stats, I know WRs like R Williams or L Fitz probally had better stats, thats not what I am talking about. Watch the video, you will understand what I mean when I say "Better".

There's no doubt he's a great receiver, but let's not get ahead of ourselves, homey. I was watching some clips during the bowl games, and they showed another guy making the exact same catch behind a DB's back and holding on to it. I couldn't even recognize the team he played for because it was a highlight clip and went too fast. Prothro's a handful, though. What's his status? As far as better receivers, I'd be here all night listing them. But, only because TP hasn't been around long enough to make honest comparisons. I can think of several UF ( of course ) receivers playing on Sunday, I'd consider "better". I'd like to know what TP's plans are.

Not really talking about Sundays, J Rice, R Moss, T Owens right off the top of my head and many more if I think for a second. I am talking more about WRs at a college level, and Im not just talking about "The Catch". The little video doesnt even do this guy justice, I have watched every single time TP has touched the ball and he has done way more than whats on that little highlight reel.

I was thinking more along the lines of Reche Caldwell and Jabar Gaffney. The reason I mention guys in the NFL is because part of what I consider great is durability and the ability to adjust to the step up to the next level. As I said, I really haven't seen enough yet. And all the guys you mentioned played in college before the NFL. Randy Moss was the most dominant college receiver I've ever seen; and I didn't even get to watch him that much. But, when I did see him, it was clear he was in a class all by himself. There wasn't even anybody I could compare to him with a straight face. Could you imagine if he'd played at a big-time program instead of Marshall? BTW- If Caldwell's name looks familiar; his younger brother, Andre (Bubba), #5, is the UF wide receiver who terrorized defenses all year catching the ball, and running those reverses that left jockstraps all over several fields.

Best in college: Reidel Anthony
A first-team All-America selection in 1996 and one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award in 1996 as the nation's top wide receiver. 126 career catches (tied for 7th best in UF history) for 2,274 yards (2nd best in school history) and 26 career TD catches (3rd best total in UF and SEC history) from 1994-96 (he entered the NFL Draft after his junior year in 1996). Had a sensational junior year in 1996 catching 72 passes (2nd best total in UF history) for 1293 yards (3rd best in SEC history) for 18 TDs, the best seasonal total in SEC history and a total that led the nation in 1996. Established a NCAA Div. 1A record for most consecutive games catching a TD pass (11) and tied a record for most games catching a TD pass in a season (11). Selected in first round of 1997 NFL Draft by Tampa Bay.
Best Pro: Wes Chandler
All-American in 1976 and 1977. NFL first-round draft choice in 1978. Played for New Orleans Saints, 1978-81, veteran All-Pro and Pro Bowl star with San Diego Chargers from 1982-87. Retired in 1988 after joining San Francisco. In 1999 selected to UF's Team of the Century. Now an assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys.
Or: Cris Collinsworth
All-American in 1980. Three- year All-SEC choice, 1978-80. Academic All-American, 1980. All-Pro wide receiver with Cincinnati Bengals and NFL Rookie of the Year in 1981. Inducted into Verizon Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 2001.

I got to see Moss play in person when Ole Miss played Marshall in the Music City Bowl. We lined up a 5'4" DB against him and actually held him in check after an 87-yard TD reception on the first play. Greatest plan ever.

SS and RB, very talented WR's at USCe, but I wouldnt trade Prothro for both of them.........Even if you threw in Rice....... I guess we are all a little biased when it comes to our opinions on good/better/best. I prefer Prothro to anyone listed thus far, but had he have went to AU, I imagine I might feel a little different. LOL

Don Hutson gets my vote. The guy played in the 30's and 40's (?) and he still holds some major receiving and overall records. Who still holds records after 70 years?!?!? tim is right, Hutson was a freak.
Don't forget Ozzie Newsome either. He was before my time and I never saw him play (obviously, the same with Hutson) but I know he was as influential a receiver as anyone in Bama's football history.
As for Pro, had he stayed healthy we very well may be talking about receiver of the year, perhaps even decade. I give him that much credit not just for his catching and other athletic abilities but for his game-changing abilities (no pun intended, he did after all make Alabama a cool million for such qualities). More often than not you see a QB or RB really grab a game and take control of it, Pro is one of the few receivers who could really dictate a game just by being on the field.
Gator you were asking about his future. Last I heard he was finally done with his surgeries and was well into his rehab. He still has a limp but he is very anxious to get back on the field in 2007. I doubt he'll ever be 100% again but the kid really loves playing football and I think you have to admire that after such a terrible injury.

I thought Pro medical redshirted for the 2006 season (since it would have been his senior season) so he could play in 07. I'm not familiar with how many years you can redshirt for an injury but I was under the impression that it was 07 or bust for him.

CJ is a great WR, but "easily" better, come on Blake, get real
CJ is bigger, faster, and makes a ton of crazy catches to go along with all of his receptions from arguably one of the worst QB's in D-1. Pro had Croyle who despite his lack of running ability could pinpoint deep passes. CJ is just one of those players who is on a completely different level, and he's projected to go #1,2, or 3 in the draft.
Bamafan316
01-13-2007, 09:25 AM
Well first of all CJ is a lot bigger then Prothro. Prothro isn't just a great wr he is a great player. He lined up as QB, WR, and PR. He was just an over all great athlete. On a college level Prothro in IMO is better player then CJ. In the NFL though it would go to CJ just because he is built for the NFL.

The thread title asks "A better WR?" and Calvin Johnson is a better WR. In fact, there are plenty of WR's that were better at the WR position than Prothro. Without that insane catch he is just another decent receiver at the college level that no one outside of the SEC would really know about.

To me to be one of the greatest college recievers you would also have to back it up some with some significant nfl career. WR's such as Desmond Howard, Michael Jenkins (whom still has a chance to make some strides with the Falcons), an Gardener (from Clemson) were decent and good recievers in college but were or are at this time busts in the NFL which tells me they were either overated or products of a system in college.

Not the best ever, but one of my personal favorites in Alabama history. I just hope he doesn't wind up like AC Carter. Bad injury, never got to play again. He was an awesome talent like Prothro too. It just sucks that his career was cut short. I really hope it doesn't happen to TP.

Bigger, not faster and like I already stated CJ is a great reciever. If you think "the catch" is the only thing TP has done, then you dont watch Bama football like I watch the Tigers. You sure do make alot of negative statements about The Tide for someone who obviously knows so little about them.
