"In addition, an NCAA official confirmed that Rice offensive coordinator Major Applewhite will be named quarterbacks coach at Alabama under new coach Nick Saban."
Good deal. This is the same QB from the state of Alabama who played at Texas?

From a U Tejas website:
"Born 7/26/78 full name is Major Lee Applewhite a sports management major was born in Baton Rouge, La., but also has lived in Charlotte, N.C. (1989-90), Jacksonville, Fla. (1982-86), Savannah, Ga. (1981) and Texarkana, Texas (1978-80)"
I think I read he was named after former bama player Major Oglevee. Supposed to be a good coach. Nice pick up by Sa6an.

Don't think he is actually from Alabama, but yes he played at Texas. Both of his parents are alumni and he is a live long Bama fan who grew up dreaming of playing for Alabama, but DuBose never offered a scholarship.

Good hire, Major will be able to help JPW with some fresh ideas and thinking.
I don't get the hiring of Lance Thompson though, as he was demoted by UCF's O'Leary after the '05 season. The Irishman is no less difficult to work with as Saban and he is a Defensive Coach himself.
Seems that Saban's search is going slowly which is not unexpected.

I knew he had something to do with Alabama. I suppose he has his chance now.

Nah, but I'd have come up with something. I guess I should have typed it correctly, as Sa666an.

Applewhite was playing for Texas when I first moved out here. The was a QB controversy with him and Chris Sims. He seemed to me to be a smarter player and more respected by his team but didn't have quite the physical tools as Sims. Almost everyone agrees Mac Brown badly mishandled the situation.

Well, that's okay. Tommy Tuberville will always be to me: Tubby, Tubs, TuberVile, Tammy Tubesteak, Tammy Tinkerbell, Tommy wants his Mommy, Ears, The Pine Box Enthusiast, and many more!

I remember Applewhite as a player. Then Simms took over and I never heard from him again, until now. I'm glad he's a part of the Alabama coaching staff. The last QB's coach we hired turned out to also be our head coach (i.e. Shula from the Dolphins). We all know how that turned out.

Just curious. A lot of people have labeled Saban as Satan on here. I didn't know if you were doing the same, but I should have known.

He may not be Satan, but I bet he's on his Christmas card list!
Loved the briefing yesterday. Everything would be perfect if it weren't for those mean ole reporters!

Reporters huh? I didn't see the "briefing", but I do know that most reporters are a-holes and always try to spin things for the worst whether your name is Bill Parcells or Nick Saban.

I remember Applewhite as a player. Then Simms took over and I never heard from him again, until now. It would be more accurate to say that Simms tried to take over, or rather, Brown tried to put Simms in charge. Applewhite's last season or two was a series of games in which Simms started, but Applewhite came in late and won.

Well, I meant that after Simms was named starter, you saw him make the jump to the NFL. I didn't see Applewhite anywhere on Sundays. But I'm glad he's in Tuscaloosa now.

Hold the phone, guys. I've seen too many newspaper reports about Alabama coaching hires that were flat out wrong in the last month. I hope Applewhite comes to BAMA, but until it's made official by the University, I'm taking anything I hear with a huge grain of salt.

Make sure it's Morton's. It's the best salt available. I was under the impression he was already hired. I wasn't aware it wasn't official.

Nope, it's not official. (Wish it were, though.) However, I do like our chances. CMA is a life-long BAMA fan and both his parents are alumni. Nevertheless, we should know something very, very soon. This is a big recruiting weekend and it would help to already have him on board if he is coming. If I hear confirmed reports about him being on campus and talking to recruits, I would call it a done deal. Coach Smart was talking to recruits a day or two before he was officially announced by the University.

My take is that with CMA being so young, and not too far removed from the game, he'd definitely be able to work closer with JPW and Jimmy Barnes along with the other backups. He'd be a perfect fit imho.

That's pretty much the way I remember too. The fan base was pro-Applewhite but Sims was the golden boy who never quite lived up to the billing he recieved.
