BATON ROUGE LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux has not been arrested. But it could be worse.
Perrilloux, a redshirt freshman from Reserve outside New Orleans, is among the subjects of a federal criminal investigation, according to multiple media reports.
Baton Rouge attorney Nathan Fisher, who has often represented LSU athletes in legal trouble over the years, is representing Perrilloux in this matter.
As of Wednesday, Perrilloux was still on the LSU football team, and LSU coach Les Miles sounded as if he knew very little of Perrilloux's situation.
"I have no information there whatsoever," Miles said when asked about Perrilloux during a news conference in which LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell announced he was going pro.
"You're giving me information," Miles said to the reporter's question. "I know nothing about what you're talking about. I do not know if he's in any trouble whatsoever."
Another Baton Rouge attorney said there were rumors Wednesday at the federal courthouse downtown that Perrilloux was going to turn himself in.
Baton Rouge Police spokesman L'Jean McKneely said Wednesday that a Ryan Perrilloux had not been arrested in the Baton Rouge area. New Orleans Police spokesman Bambi Hall said Perrilloux had not been arrested in the New Orleans area either.
Perrilloux or anyone in his family were not available for comment.
Perrilloux was the nation's No. 1 high school quarterback in 2005 coming out of East St. John, where he threw for 9,025 yards and ran for another 3,680 in his career. He chose LSU after first committing to Texas. Perrilloux was redshirted in 2005. In 2006, he played in five games, completing 1-of-4 passes for 10 yards.
With Russell leaving for the NFL and Perrilloux's future status unknown, LSU could be down to one experienced quarterback for the 2007 season. That is Matt Flynn, who will be a senior next season.
Flynn completed 12-of-20 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in limited duty in 2006. He was the MVP of the Peach Bowl last season with Russell not available because of a shoulder injury. Flynn completed 13-of-22 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns in a 40-3 LSU win.
"Certainly with the departure of JaMarcus, for both guys (Flynn and Perrilloux) that position becomes open and we're going to let the spring tell," Miles said. "Certainly Matt has an edge in experience and understanding, but I think it's always safe to let competition give the deciding answer. We'll go into spring, and there will be plenty of snaps to take all spring long for two quarterbacks. We'll certainly get a good view of who's best."
For the 2007 recruiting class, LSU has a commitment from one high school quarterback "" 6-foot-3, 210-pound Jarrett Lee of Brenham, Texas. If he signs with LSU next month, he will not join the team until August.
Miles will also be breaking in a new offensive coordinator this spring as he is busy now trying to find a replacement for Jimbo Fisher, who became Florida State's offensive coordinator on Monday.
