Here is a breakdown of the last 5 years and the selected programs and how they fared in games against teams ranked in the top 10 at the time of the game. It is interested to me that Auburn(and Tennessee) have played more games against top 10 teams over the last 5 years than anybody with 15.
1. Ohio St....8-3 .727
2. USC...7-3 .700
3. Auburn...10-5 .667
4. Florida...8-6 .571
Miami...4-3 .571
6. Texas...5-4 .556
7. Virginia Tech...4-4 .500
8. Georgia...4-5 .444
9. LSU...4-6 .400
Tennessee 6-9 .400
Oklahoma...4-6 .400
12. Michigan...4-7 .364
13. Lousiville...1-2 .333
14. FSU...3-7 .300
15. Wisconsin...2-6 .250
16. West Virginia...1-4 .200
Penn St...1-4 .200
18. Notre Dame...2-9 .182
19. Cal...1-6 .143
Oregon...1-6 .143
21. Alabama...1-9 .100
22. Nebraska...0-10 .000

Auburn is 8-1 in the last 3 years, which is just as many wins at the #1 team on that list (8-3 OSU), with less losses.
We'd be by FAR #1 over the last 3 years

Both teams are now ranked and there is no denying that both are very respectable and good teams this year, but that's a moot point

Tech also beat Miami last year, who was a top 10 team. They can beat anyone, it just matters what kind of day Reggie Ball is having

The problem I have with these rankings is they use where the team was ranked when the game was played. They should only use the final polls to determine the rankings of a team you beat or beat you. If a team starts the season ranked very high (for example TX this year) and then gets exposed as the season goes on, you shouldn't get the same credit as for a team that finishes in the top 10.

Also just look at Bama in 2000 (preseason #3, finished 3-8) or Tennessee last year (also preseason #3, finished 5-6).
