View Full Version : Who really should have won the Heisman? T. Smith or McFadden?

Troy Smith definitely did not look of Heisman caliber last night. The question is, is the SEC that good? Was one of our own (McFadden) more deserving of the trophy? The reason I really question this now is because of the poor performance of OSU and the fact ESPN is now talking about the SEC as if it were gold. Any thoughts?

Troy Smith looked great all year because of the lack of talent he and his team faced all year.

Of course I'm a little biased, but ya 1600+ rushing yards in the SEC (not just the SEC, but playing LSU, Floirda, Auburn, Tennessee, Alabama ect) with no passing game and facing eight, nine, and ten in the box SEC defenses. Ya, I'll agree with you on this one buddy. He was hurt in the SECCG and in the Capital One Bowl.

I have no problem with Smith winning the Heisman....he did stink up the field during the NC game, but OSU played all season ranked #1, and he was under great pressure with the attention and all, and he still led OSU to the NC game.

McFadden had an outstanding year, but I doubt anyone expected him or ARK to have the season's they did, so they kind of sneaked up on people. Most were paying attention to GA, FL, LSU and Auburn in the SEC......

I'm to the point of "who cares" when it comes to the Heisman Trophy. As ESPN slowly monopolized the mass sports information industry, so too has the Heisman devolved into a popularity contest instead of being awarded for on-the-field dominance.

The Heisman trophy is not for the best player in college football, it is for the leader of the team that ESPN blows the hardest. Saying that, Troy Smith deserved it. Darren Mcfadden was one of the best players in college football this year.

You hit the nail on the head. It's definately a popularity contest.

i still think Smith earned the Heisman. Had the Heisman been selected after the NC game, I don't know that Smith or Quinn would have been at the show.

T. Smith without a doubt was a deserving winner of the Heisman. He had a horrible game last night and got no help from anyone else on his offense...not to mention his gamebreaker was on the sidelines. That doesn't change the fact that he had a hell of a season before then. At best they were equally deserving of the Heisman and it should always go to the Senior in that case. McFadden will have his chance next year.

If anyone should have been given the Heisman it should have been me. So I could sell it on ebay for enough to buy the complete DVD series of Melrose Place, Party of Five, and Night Rider. :brick:

I have to disagree with you on this one. The reason I do. The Hoggs were able to stay close for most of the game with UF. You have to be a pretty good team to do that. I think some others that posted on this topic hit the nail on the head when they said that ESPN blows a player up, and that OSU played a bunch of weaklings. Look at Michigan, they were supposed to be tough and USC ripped them a new one, much like UF did OSU last night. OSU lost by 27 points last night. Arky lost to UF by 10 pts., Bama lost to UF by 15 pts., USC by 1 pt., UT by 1 pt., LSU by 13 pts. My point is the Big 10 blows hard. If all these teams can hang with UF, the SEC is by far the toughest conference and somebody from the SEC should have won the Heisman IMO. We just don't blow Corso and the bunch like the PAC 10 and Big 10, so there you go.

A big part of the reason that Smith won & McFadden didn't is because a large portion of Heisman Hype is generated in the preseason. Some preseason Heisman Hopefuls follow through with a good year (Smith) and others don't (K. Irons - injuries etc...). But unfortunately for a great player like McFadden that started slow (sluggish against USCW, injuries, etc...) the mountain of public opinion is hard to overcome.

All in all though I can't say that any single player stood out to me this year as a obviously dominate "Heisman" type player. IMO Lots of really good players this year, but no one that was iconically great. McFadden should be a front runner next year coming out of the gates.

Just because we are the best conference doesn't mean every single individual award should come our way. OSU sucked it up last night but I don't think you'd find any logical Gator fan that would tell you that Gator team last night played the same as it did in all the games you mentioned. They were out of their minds last night. Chris Leak didn't make any of his patented mental lapses, and Troy Smith had zero time to go downfield the entire game. If Chris Leak had the same kind of pressure all night there's no way he would have had as good a performance as he did. UF was simply better than them at every facet of the game so it was never an issue for them. A (weakly) comparable situation for McFadden would be if the D-line was in the backfield already on most of the handoff plays. Sure he'd make a few good runs along the way but overall he wouldn't do much in the game.

Back to comparing the scores....you know it doesn't work like that. ESPN had fun with that very concept where they joked that Ohio University was laying claim to the national championship since they beat a team, that beat a team.....that beat a team, that beat Auburn, who beat Florida. We beat Florida 2 out of 3 in basketball last year but you won't find a logical Gamecock fan claiming we should be the real national champ. The same applies now, and I hope not to see any Gamecock fans claiming we're better than OSU now since we only lost by 1 pt. Plus let's not forget that bowl games are a whole different story from weekly matchups. I'm sure no one here believe Penn St. and Wisconsin would routinely beat UT and Ark, right?

In conclusion, are we ever going to stop whining about ESPN? Halfway during the season I saw almost all of them say that the SEC was easily the best conference in the nation. But then everyone else started saying that so they had to create controversy to boost interest and fan the flames burning under fans arses. The majority of what you hear Herbstreit, Corso, Maye, Holtz, et al say is simply to boost ratings. They take things that either they believe to be true or could conceivably make an argument for and exaggerate it to piss you guys off and get you talking. It clearly works. They're no different than political pundits spewing their BS on CNN or Fox News. Like your politics, take everything with a grain of salt.

No team in the SEC would have been worse with Troy Smith as their QB this season, and almost all would have been better with him as QB. He's a terrific player that never had a chance last night. McFadden is a beast as well, but I stand by statement that AT BEST they were equals and the Senior should always take priority over an underclassman.

also remember that mcfadden has 1600 yards sharing the backfield with another 1000 yard rusher, so that makes it even more incredible

Maybe you should be sitting with the talking heads at ESPN. No offense but, it sounds like an explanation they would give. What I posted was just my opinion. I don't think Troy Smith will last 3 years tops in the NFL. As far as McFadden goes it shouldn't matter whether your a senior or underclassmen, the better player should win the award. Not that the award means much anymore. I'm not going to argue the issue. It's just my opinion and the way I see it. And of course I am biased towards the SEC. But your crazy if you think OSU would have been at the NC game last night had they played an SEC schedule.

Which makes me question the post before yours. What is it supposed to mean? Troy Smith and OSU for president?

:icon_rofl Now, that's hilarious. I was wondering when someone was going to crucify that guy for that. Every time I see him do that, I start laughing. I can't help it. I've been silently thanking God all year he didn't play for UF. I don't care if he's the best player in the country, it's hard to get respect when everyone in the stands is laughing their a.ses off. And they did. I even heard commentators trying to muffle laughs, not always successfully.

I like skinner. I think hes funny but I also think hes a great punter. He had a bad game in the SEC CG though.
Other than that hes been pretty good for Arkansas's spec. teams.

Yeah, he's a good punter, just goofy. He's got the whole "chi" thing down. I guess if that's what it takes to clear your mind then so be it. My wife found the pic. All season long she kept asking me, "what the hell is he doing?" I had no logical explanation for her. That's just Skinner.
