View Full Version : What Do You Think About Reputation Points?

Reputation points can make or break certain posters (in their own minds I suppose). Others don't care. Personally, I don't care about recieving them. I just like to give them. But the more I have, the more I can give to a person for a good post, so I don't mind recieving them. I give them just for the heck of it sometimes.
What are your thoughts and intentions concerning reputation points?

I think some people use them just when they get pissed off, others use them as they are intended to be used IMO. Using them to put someone down that doesn't share the same veiw as you is childish IMO that's the wrong way to use them. I'm like you Wally, I don't care one way or the other but, it does suck to get neg rep for having an opinion or being proud of your favorite team.

I think its bad when some people negative rep others because of disagreements of opinions. I have my own opinion about it but I don't pay the bills for this site either.

i think it's fine until people get bitchy about receiving neg rep and try to retaliate. It's just a few negative points, it's not like they can't be made up.

I think I've given rep only a few times, in my early days. I don't give negative rep anymore. Just the positive stuff.

i think the neg rep is a way of showing disapproval, and it apparently bothers some people, so it works. its just ridiculous when you neg someone for constant flaming and then get neg back with coments like, "I dont really care what you are tire of loser, how that NC thing going??"

Exactly. But it doesn't bother me. If I was in the red, I'd still be alright. Red looks better anyway. However, I don't think I could do anything that bad to drop that far down. I also don't give neg rep to trolls, it keeps them around long enough to get banned. A ban is much more severe.

As for MY own personal opinion, I have never negative repped anyone including the notorious flamer.

I see your point, but there are some, not all that flat foot go off; thus, showing their disapproval and then also give neg rep. A lot of the time the one giving the neg is the one that started the flaming to begin with. :brick:

What possible difference does it make? I am here to keep up with the SEC and if I have an opinion, I like to share it.

I've never neg repped anyone, either. That would be pretty stupid, IMO. As soon as you do that, you've opened the flood gates where 2 people just keep neg repping each other until you're both screwed.:azz: Then people get together and gang up on other people. It's a bad practice, all around. If I've got a disagreement with someone, I'm confident I can relay that message with my mind in a post. Clicking on a red button isn't terribly creative, and doesn't help getting your point across. The person getting the neg rep might not even find out why. Stupidity shows its face in the man who ( no longer able to rationally and logically debate his case ), resorts to insults and volume, in a vain attempt to illustrate his point.

Well said, bravo. Something should be said about people who make wayyyy to mean post in a 24 hour period. Even a goat needs to graze.

placing importance in reputation points is the same as placing importance in a high post count, in my opinion. It may only matter to younger posters, who make up the majority of blog sites across the net.
It used to be having a high post count was thought to be as big an indication of someone's reputation or knowledge as the points was. You figured that if some one contributed to a forum so much, then they obviously have something to say. But the emphasis is on the word "contribute". A member could post 20+ posts a day, and have 1,000 posts in no time, but if 70-80% of all his posts were garbage, then it doesn't say much.
For a site such as this one that should have a large contingency of adult posters, posting ones opinion, or addressing a topic or comment, in a intelligent fashion means more to me.

I agree with you here. Its not how many posts you have but the quality of each post right?

Reputation points should be something that people are proud of, not obsessed with.
Unfortuanetly, there are people who try too hard to earn them while others blatantly abuse the use of negative reputation points simply because they can. I've shown this sort of abuse by one poster in one of my comments on the "Funny Shula Pic" thread. In this case, the abuser dished out negative reputation to another poster for calling his school's fan "classless trash" when in all actuality the abuser used the same language to describe his rival school's fans.
That sort of abuse of reputation points isn't going to be solved with more negative rep, but I would expect the higher administrators to take issue with this poster and his abuse by returning the points that he took away as well as implement measures to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

i don't worry about the quality of my posts except that they express how i feel about the situation. i'm not here to to p... on your leg trying to make you think it is warm rain. i try to respect each and everyone on this board regardless of their 'jort' persuasion. my two best friends are gators and we butt heads a lot BUT we have got each others backs. that is what make it or breaks it to me as to my reputation.

Personally, I think there should be no neg rep. If people like you, they can give you positive rep, if not you will get no rep and it will not grow. The only neg rep I have ever given has been payback. This sounds bad I guess, but I dont neg rep people unless they neg me first. I would rather get my point across with debate than sneaking around and neg repping someone because I disagree with them. My rep doesnt really matter to me except for when was below 10 and the rep I gave out was worthless. Here is an example, a certain poster had alot of rep power and I had virtually none. When I disagreed with some of his post, he started neg repping me every other day. I didnt even notice until he had "nuked" my rep points so low that I couldnt even give out rep. This went on for weeks and even though alot of people were giving me plus rep, his constant negs were cancelling that all out and then some. I like to be able to give out plus rep when someone makes a good post, other than that, its pretty much useless. IMO

I know where your coming from here. Pretty much all of my closest friends are die hard UGA fans. They give me hell about being a gator fan all the time and im always outnumbered with them. But they too have my back all the time.
I remember a group of drunk UGA fans who were talking trash to me in jax after UF won (again). My Georiga friends all got in their face before I even had time to respond. You could tell the other guys were kinda shocked.
I wouldnt trade my dumbass UGA friends for 1000 Gator friends.

this is a bulletin board for posting guy, you disaprove by... get this.....posting! If someone is extremely innappropriate to someone frankly undeserving or just an A-hole, then give'em some neg reps (even though hardly then) but sometimes a poster deserves an A-holish retort.............you can't just act like a child and neg. rep as a way to "show them"

I'm glad I saw this post. I kind of forget about rep points, thanks to those gave me some.
How do I find a full list of my rep points so I can see if I have any negative ones?
(aza, I SWEAR I'm not a moron!)
Oh, and my two cents worth - I thought the purpose of the rep points was to self moderate, but from the conversation it seems they can clearly be abused. Rather than see how many cumulative posts someone has, I'd rather see how many negative rep points you dished out. That will tell me all i need to know about you. That and whether you roll their toilet paper over or under

I personally only give neg rep points to anyone who personally attacks me which doesn't happen often. I like to give positive rep points as some of y'all say some funny stuff!
