Sorry guys, I know this isn't the "Florida Recruiting" thread, but I think this news deserves it's own thread!!!
John Brantley, 5* QB, Gatorade National Player of the Year has switched his committment from Texas to Florida...he called Coach Meyer this afternoon to confirm it. Brantley's uncle, who hosts a sports radio show, made the announcement..."Johnny's 110% GATOR"!!!
It has been rumored since Brantley committed to Texas this Summer that it may not stick. His father played at UF as did many of his other family members...the family reminds me of the Tebows, all of them are Gators. Glad he came to his senses!!!
Congrats to Coach Meyer and Staff for picking up a HUGE committment!!!!
GO GATORS!!!!

I was wondering about him. I read an impressive ad on him on espn.com. Its quite awesome to have a blue chip QB (besides Tebow).
I was about to ask you or GN what the status was on him. What an outstanding pickup for the gators. :thumpsup:Florida has one hell of a recruiting class this year!

I've been MIA lately on the recruiting trail....last I heard JB's dad said they were going to discuss distance as a reason to possiblly switch schools, but that was all at the time. I guess it's happened!
All I can say is WOW....that's a HUGE get for us. He'll redshirt, and have two or three years to lead the team.....unless Cam has something to say about it. I love the board right now, but I don't want to lose Cam...I think he can be special.

Yea, Brantley has insisted that he wants to RS...Cam will be Tebow's back-up...heck, I believe Cam will contribute alot next season. That'll give Brantley some space in between QBs...what do y'all think will happen with Waggener? Will he "gray-shirt"...
Tell you what, I watched Brantley's team play a local team, Blountstown...the guy throw's a prettier spiral than Leak, if it's possible. He's got a total cannon for an arm.

Here's what I think.....
Meyer finally realized that you can win in a big way with (and, possibly, with only) the passing game. We have had virtually no running game and no option with the QB all year, and we're playing for the national championship with a SEC title ring on order.
So, things to do: Go get a big back to run it between the tackles (Bo = check) and get a mobile (if not a true "dual-threat") QB who can throw and move the pocket (JB = check). It's the passing attack out of the spread that's dangerous....WVU's style won't work consistently.
I really hate to say this, but I think we pull Waggener along until we're SURE JB and Cam stick. Once that happens, we grayshirt him or let him loose....or he pads the roster in the hopes of getting some last minute mop-up duty in three years.
The worst thing would be to let him go now, JB switches back to Texas, and we have two schollie QBs on the roster again in TT and Cam.

This was a big pickup for the Gators! Congrats! This kid is so fundamentally sound that it's ridiculous. He and Jimmy Clausen are the most fundamentally sound quarterbacks in this class, and Brantley could play right away if he wasn't behind Tebow and if he didn't want to be redshirted. It sounds like y'all are going to have the same problem y'all had with Spurrier and the same problem we will have starting next year . . . Who do you play at QB?! This is a great problem to have. For what it's worth, it sounds like Brantley is a GREAT kid, too. Congrats, once again. As much as I don't want to play him, it's great that the talent will stay in the SEC.

From what I've heard on Newton, it sounds like he will stick. He will likely back up Tebow next year, with Brantley red-shirting. I honestly don't know what to think at this point, because I have been really big on Newton since he committed. He has improved a LOT and I think he would be agreat QB for the spread that we want to run. It's going to be interesting, to say the least. LSU managed to keep 3 top QBs, I hope we can do the same!

Nice read on Brantley's decision:
http://www.gatorsports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061220/GATORS01/61220029
Waggoner faxed in his signed LOI this afternoon...he's officially a Gator!!
Cam Newton's dad said this evening that his son is happy that JB has committed and he can't wait to get to Gainesville and start the competition.
Brantley, Newton and Waggner...3 stud QBs in one class...wow!
Brantley will RS and Meyer/Mullen will bring him in slowly Tebow's JR year...Cam will be a soph...and don't forget, Cam is big enough and fast enough to be a CI-type if it comes down to it.

Yeah, just read all the updates.....
I think I'd put the trio of Tebow, Brantley, and Cam against any other three-deep in the nation....maybe even the entire world, lol.
We're just totally STACKED at QB now. Make some room on the bus for all the top WRs now....
:D :D
And one other thing....with JB winning the Elite 11 MVP award, is there any reason he shouldn't jump Clausen for the #1 QB slot? Maybe the no. 1 spot overall? He should've moved up considerably.....

Clausen is the most over-rated QB coming out of HS since Dan Kendra...he threw 3 pics in the state championship game...Brantley has smoked him in the camps...well, the ones that Clausen has attended.

Don't even have the best three-deep in the SEC. LSU's Russell, Flynn, and Perilloux have that.

Yea...Russell is the best... He's likely gone this year...
Flynn had one good game vs Miami...and from the looks of Miami...that wasn't that spectacular of a performance...
And Perilloux has yet to play...
Besides, our true freshman, Tebow, spanked Russell in the head-to-head...
I say, potentially, the best in the SEC...

Ok you want to discredit Flynn and Perilloux who have been on campus for multiple years while heaping all sorts of honors on Newton and Brantley who haven't even enrolled?
Oh, since when did 2 of 2 passing for 36 yards and 9 rushes for 35 yards equal a spanking?

Oh, since when did 2 of 2 passing for 36 yards and 9 rushes for 35 yards equal a spanking?
Since the other guy's numbers looked like this: 24/41 for 228 yards, 1 TD and 3 INT.
Let's put the numbers side by side:
Tebow: 2/2, 100% completion percentage, 2 passing TDs, 0 interceptions, 9 carries for 35 yards, 1 rushing TD
Russell: 24/41, 59% completion percentage, 1 passing TD, 3 interceptions, 4 carries for 19 yards, 0 rushing TDs
Now, in all seriousness, no one is saying that LSU's QBs aren't talented. In fact, in an earlier thread one of the Gators was worried that we wouldn't be able to keep all three. I responded by saying something to the effect of: "LSU pulled it off, I hope we can do the same." We all realize that LSU's QBS are top notch. And yes, we are celebrating and heralding this QB class a bit prematurely. Tebow has yet to see time as a starter, and Brantley and Newton aren't even on campus yet. You have to understand that we are very excited to have this depth at the QB position after only carrying 2 scholarship QBs throughout the entire year this year. The ones we added aren't too shabby either...

More to the point, if you're going to talk about Russell, then you have to include Leak. A Russell-Tebow comparison isn't fair.
I guess I was thinking more about the three deep after graduation.....

My points exactly...we Gators are just happy to have some QB depth...the fact that all 3 are higly heralded QBs makes it all the more sweeter...Cianne was just trying to rain on our parade... He should be worried about the rebs....oyeoeyeyoeyeoyeoyeeoyeyoey...football!

I agree...my point was, Russell "looks" like the dream QB...but he has yet to perform that way...and he's the starter, so he's the best they have...doesn't say much for Flynn or Perriloux.
