The '95 Cornhuskers were dubbed greatest team in college football. '61 Alabama made the quarterfinals.

HAHA....ESPN does this every so often, and they get the same result, lol.
But how can it be a true "all-time" team when it's decided by popular vote? Shouldn't "experts" decide these things for posterity...? Well, ESPN has no experts, but that's another problem.

Well, I don't disagree about ESPN having no experts. But if the entire nation decides (or a small portion representing the nation) who the All Time Greatest Team is, doesn't that make it legitimate?
The people = the voice. The experts = biased selections.

Well, it's just that if there are, say, more Oklahoma fans home sitting by there computers, ready to vote, then that certainly gives that program an advantage.
I think fan voting is cool, and to a certain degree does reflect a measure of truth, but I think there are just too many non-football related variables at play to say it's definitive, IMO.

Agreed. I guess there is really no way of determining the all time greatest. It's a matter of personal preference I suppose.
But it's hard to argue against the 1995 Nebraska team as a all time great. I chose the homer route an picked Bama, twice.

My non-expert opinion is that the '95 Huskers were the greatest of all time.

I also honestly believe that the '80 Georgia team could beat the '05 Texas team. One word---Herschel!

It's definitely hard to argue with the team that put it on us in our first NC shot. The problem is, there's been a lot of college football before our time, T.V.'s time, ESPN's time, and the young voter's time. We likely have never seen the best team of all time. Don't think many senior citizens are on line voting in this one.

That my friend would be an excellent matchup. The '05 UTx team didn't have a stellar defense, especially against OK State and USC. Granted it was better than USC's defense, it was the offense and Vince Young who carried them to a national title.
My prediction:
UGA '80 - 35
UTx '05 - 28

I would give my left nut to watch that one. You gotta remember too, that the '80 UGA team had a pretty mean defense, so I would say more along the lines of 28-21

I have always respected and liked Vince Dooley, as well as Herschel Walker. I don't think there has ever been a greater era in UGA history than when Dooley was coaching UGA.
My dream matchup would be 1966 Alabama (Undefeated, no title) vs. 1955 Oklahoma (Undefeated, National Title).
My prediction -
'66 Bama - 14
'55 Oklahoma - 10

I'm still miffed that the 1938 Vols were not in the brackets. Neyland's team went undefeated in the regular season ( giving up a total of 16 pts including seven shut outs), was ranked #2. Played #1 and undefeated Okla in theOrange Bowl and Posted their 8th shut out of the year in a 17-0 win!! BTW, that game ended a 14 game OK winning streak and was the 13th of 23 straight Vol victories!!
I just know most of you were dying to know all of this....

I knew the Vols won a championship in 1938, but not that convincingly. Perhaps they should have had a spot on the list. I know they won in 1998. Didn't they also win in 1951?

Personally I think the USCsr. of '04/'05 with a better defense would be the greatest team of all time. They had so many offensive weapons, and some of the biggest playmakers in NCAA history.

Their lack of defense is what kept them from being "the Greatest". I'll take 1978 USC over 2004 USC anyday.

Actually, WG,
They didn't win that year ( at the time the NC was decided prior to the bowl games!!!) Oklahoma won that year! ...and We thought the system sucked NOW!!
Ironically, TN won the NC the following year going Undefeated and Unscored upon during the regular season , only to be beaten by USC in the Rose Bowl 14-0

Okay, so no title in 1938, but one in 1939. Also in 1951 and 1998.
Your arguement was that the 1983 team should have been on the All Time Greatest List? Okay. Cool.
I would make the same arguement for the 1966 Alabama team who went 11-0, shut out La. Tech, Clemson, LSU, South Carolina, Southern Miss, and Auburn. They only allowed 14 points or less by Ole Miss, UT, Vandy, and MSU (the most with 14) in the regular season.
The only close game was 11-10 over the Vols. They went on to beat Nebraska 34-7 in the Sugar Bowl.
6 shutouts, 5 games with 14 points or less. Of course Alabama dominated their way to 3rd place behind #2 Michigan State and #1 Notre Dame who didn't dominate jack squat.

While this always makes for great discussion, I do not think you can even begin to adequately compare teams from different years, much less different decades of colege football.
Heck, we can't even all agree that OSU and Michigan are the best two teams in college THIS year...... how could we ever compare a team from 10 years ago to one from 50???

One of the CFB websits...can't remember which one, actually spent the time and plugged in all of the data into a computer program that actually played virtual games between the teams....
The final was the '96 Florida Gators vs the '95 Nebraska Cornhuskers...Florida won by 2-3 points...I'll try and find the link.

1961 Tide. 10-0, NC, Outscored opponents 282-22 with 6 shutouts and only 3 touchdowns ALL YEAR. No team since has held for an average 3 points per game. 3 All Americans. (Pat Trammell, Lee Roy Jordan, Billy Neighbors)

The 66 Tide was screwed for sure. They finished unbeaten, untied and returning 2 time NC's (64 & 65) but were not crowned when ND and MS had a tie. I typo'd my post though, the team I was actually talking about was the 61 tide.

Actually, you typo'd twice. The '61 team was 11-0 overall, not 10-0. Their 11th game was in the NC against Arkansas, who they also beat for a Championship for the 1979 season.

The '90s had some great years for CFB ('95 Huskers, '96 Gators, '99 Noles, Ray Goff/ Jim Donnan...oh...well...some years weren't so great for some teams)
