You know what is funny about the PS3 release in Japan? They sold 14,000+ less games than actual consoles. I guess some people just couldn't afford both.

My girlfriend has a Wii on pre-order for my birthday which will go in the living room while my 360 resides in my bedroom on my HD TV.
I will say that I may eventually get a PS3 so I can take advantage of my TV's HDMI input, but after dropping $1800 to build a new computer, I think I can wait.
The only thing I don't like about the Wii are the controllers. :thumbsdow
I hate those things, but other than that it's graphics are pretty good. That along with Nintendo's reputation for quality.
This will be the 1st title I buy for the 360. Here's a review of it.

Halo 3 MP public beta due spring 2007
Public beta test of anticipated shooter's online multiplayer to launch next year; new Halo 2 maps, new TV spot also en route.
As part of its most recent weekly update, Bungie Software announced that "will be some pretty BIG surprises and maybe announcements," on November 16, the fifth anniversary of the release of Halo. The news caused followers of the flagship Xbox, PC, and soon Xbox 360 franchise to go wild, prompting predictions of everything from a ship-date announcement to a demo going up on Xbox Live Marketplace.
Guess what? As it turns out, everyone was wrong. Early this morning, Bungie's parent company Microsoft announced that next spring, it will stage an open beta test for the multiplayer aspects of Halo 3. "The Xbox Live multiplayer public beta, which is a prerelease version of the multiplayer experience of Halo 3, is scheduled for availability in spring 2007 exclusively on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system," Microsoft said in a statement.
Microsoft gave no further details about the Halo 3 beta, but did divulge some information about the PR campaign for the eagerly awaited game, due sometime in 2007. On December 4, a single advertisement for the game will be shown during an airing of Monday Night Football on ESPN. "The ad...will provide viewers with a unique and compelling look at Master Chief and the world of Halo 3," Microsoft said in a statement, giving no further details.
Microsoft announced today that Halo 2, the massive Xbox hit which has seen 4 billion Xbox Live games played to date, will also be getting a series of "all-new multiplayer maps" next spring. However, unlike previous Halo 2 downloads, the new maps will only be available to Xbox 360 owners. Previously, a set of maps were offered for both download on Xbox Live to regular Xbox owners and also via a $19.99 boxed retail game disc.

Sony faces $366.6 Million loss in games division.
By Justin Mann, TechSpot.com
Some real figures regarding the hurt Sony has been put under recently have been made available. For their overall company, profits were only a fractional 6% of what they were a year ago at $14.3 Million. What's even more astounding is that their games division has reported a loss rather than a profit. A massive one at that, with a loss of $366.6 Million. Various reasons have been cited for the losses, including the costly battery recall, production and launch of the PlayStation 3, reduced pricing on the PS2 and PSP as well as others. Slower software sales also played a part.
Supposedly they will still retain a healthy profit through the end of the year, though one must wonder how much of that is based on the potential sales of the PS3 and its games. Likely, Sony is not counting on their games division making much of a profit, if any, for a long time.

Compatibility glitches for PlayStation 3.
By Derek Sooman, TechSpot.com
Sony has admitted that the PS3 is unable to play a number of titles which were designed for the PS and PS2. The idea was always that the PS3 would be fully backwards compatible, but Sony have come forward and said that the audio features do not work on some titles, and that some other titles have problems with graphics.
A Sony spokesman has told the BBC that they are aware of a number of titles that have compatibility issues, but that Sony will be making a software upgrade available that will deal with these. Seemingly, some 200 games sold for the original PlayStation and the PlayStation 2 are affected by these issues. This apparently includes such blockbusters as Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy.
Industry specialists say the glitches are similar to problems that often plague console launches and are not likely to have a lasting impact on the PS3 business. The console was originally intended to go on sale in early 2006, but production problems and shortages of components caused a delay. The European launch of the console has been pushed back to March 2007
"There are always sorts of little problems at launch ... It may take some time to make everything compatible, but I don't think it's a huge problem," KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide said.

Yea, the controller is the reason I'm getting a Wii. It's also why I'm going to put it in the living room so I can have a place to spread out and over exaggerate all my motions and act like a general crazy person.
FEAR is a great game. I have it on PC, and it scared the crap out of me. Condemned is a good one to pick up too (also made by Monolith). You really need to get Gears of War though. Best game on the system.

GatorNation

I'm not gonna buy a new system until all the bells and whistles of the NCAA Football title come with it. That's why I didn't buy the 360: NCAA '07 didn't have the new playbooks, stadium pulse, and a lot of other things....
I'm guessing that won't happen until EA Sports feels confident that gamers have switched over to new-gen consoles so they don't lose PS2/X-box sales from customers that haven't purchased a new system.
Cianne

Losing the new playbooks was the only bad thing about NCAA '07 for the 360 (outside of Ole Miss' stadium not being in the game :() Losing stadium pulse and the extra fluff where you get to be a booster didn't bother me. I never used those things anyway. I just wanna play football.

Son of a $*$#$, I thought that getting to wal-mart at 5 today would be early enough to get in line seeing how auburn isn't exactly huge, but no, kids got there at 2AM this morning. It doesn't help that the Sony isn't shipping nearly as many as they said. Wal-Mart was supposed to have 10-20, but only got 6.
The Wii looks like it would be cool to use the controllers for a little while, but wouldn't it get on your nerves after awhile/tiring as hell if you're playing boxing or something. Also, the games on them look like they didn't have a graphics upgrade and look like they are more geared towards kids and anime fans.

They have an optional control pad you can purchase if the other doesn't suit you. Also, the little nunchuck attachment (the toggle) is just that. I think the pad that you attach the toggle to can be played as a regular controller. Horizontally.
I like the idea that you can move with the game. It's Nintendo's way of saying, "Video games don't have to make you a lazy zombie." You can actually get a work out playing just a couple hours of Super Mario Galaxy or Super Smash Bros. Brawl (set to be released in 2007, instead of as a launch title :brick: I can't stand the anticpation).
I think the Wii can outsell the overpriced monster machine, the PS3. $600 or $700 is way to expensive for a console. I'll be buying the Wii, and when Halo 3 arrives, the X-Box 360.

The PS3 does not upscale games or DVD's.
If your HDTV is 1080i and does not take a 720p signal, you will only be able to game in 480p unless the game is designed for 1080i. This affects the flagship title Resistance: Fall of Man among several others.
If your HDTV is 1080i or 1080P but will take a 720p signal, you TV can upscale to 1080 resolution but this will introduce some lag into the gameplay.
In contrast, the 360 Does upscale games and will also upscale DVD's if you use the VGA cable.

I think the fact that Nintendo WII is only $250 is what appeals to people the most. I know that my wife and I are on a tight budget & we both agreed that if we buy a new gaming console, it will be the WII.

They actually invented a slip-resistant bracelet/wrist band you can attach to the Wii Remote. I heard that Nintendo forced themselves to take a loss by cutting the price. Lower prices = better profits from consumers in the long run. They lost money for now, but hope to make the money they did lose by selling the Wii at a much lower price. Otherwise, the system would be about $350-$400 like the XBox 360.
BTW, thanks for the link. I enjoyed seeing that girl's knee dislocated.
Cianne
12-13-2006, 02:36 PM
Slip-resistant? That's not the issue. The issue is that the wrist band breaks and then the controller goes through a TV.
Oh and generally all companies take a loss on the console. Microsoft actually makes money on the console because they hold all the rights to the innards so that they don't have to worry about royalty costs. Sony loses about $300-$350 per console sold though.

It is you who is wrong.
Insiders stress that Revolution runs on an extension of the Gekko and Flipper architectures that powered GameCube, which is why studios who worked on GCN will have no problem making the transition to the new machine, they say. IBM's "Broadway" CPU is clocked at 729MHz, according to updated Nintendo documentation. By comparison, GameCube's Gekko CPU ran at 485MHz. The original Xbox's CPU, admittedly a different architecture altogether, was clocked at 733MHz. Meanwhile, Xbox 360 runs three symmetrical cores at 3.2GHz.
Clearly, numbers don't mean everything, but on paper Revolution's CPU falls performance-wise somewhere well beyond GameCube and just shy of the original Xbox. However, it's important to remember that there is no way to accurately gauge the performance difference between GCN's PowerPC-based architecture and the the Intel-based CPU of Xbox. Further, even if we could, these numbers are only one part of the equation.
Revolution's ATI-provided "Hollywood" GPU clocks in at 243MHz. By comparison, GameCube's GPU ran at 162MHz, while the GPU on the original Xbox was clocked at 233MHz. Sources we spoke with suggest that it is unlikely the GPU will feature any added shaders, as has been speculated.
"The 'Hollywood' is a large-scale integrated chip that includes the GPU, DSP, I/O bridge and 3MBs of texture memory," a studio source told us.
The overall system memory numbers we reported last December have not greatly fluctuated, but new clarifications have surfaced. Revolution will operate using 24MBs of "main" 1T-SRAM. It will additionally boast 64MBs of "external" 1T-SRAM. That brings the total number of system RAM up to 88MBs, not including the 3MB texture buffer on the GPU. By comparison, GameCube featured 40MBs of RAM not counting the GPU's on-board 3MBs. The original Xbox included 64MBs total RAM. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 operate on 512MBs of RAM.

It is you who is wrong.
I wasn't entirely wrong. You mentioned that the RAM specifically. That is what I was touching on. I should have made that clear in my post, but didn't.
This is straight from the article you quoted. The original X-Box ran on 64MB's of RAM. The Wii runs on 88MB's of RAM, eclipsing that of the X-Box. The Gamecube only ran on 40MB's, which is less than half of the Wii. Making the Wii more than twice as powerful as the GC, and shades more powerful than the original X-Box.
Not only is the RAM more powerful, so is the GPU...
Revolution's ATI-provided "Hollywood" GPU clocks in at 243MHz. By comparison, GameCube's GPU ran at 162MHz, while the GPU on the original Xbox was clocked at 233MHz.
So, again, I wasn't entirely wrong.

Anyone get a chance to see and/or play NCAA '07 on both systems? That's the game I play 98% of the time. The only others, really, are the Hitman and SSX series, though I may buy one or two of the war games. They look pretty sweet.
I'm guessing for the money differential, PS3 better be a lot better than 360 (at some point, at least), or Sony is going to lose a ton of cash.

You mean at the "end" of Blood Money, when he's stretched out on the coffin thing?
If so, I have some great news....

That isn't the end of the game, my friend! You have to get up (keep wiggling the joystick and your heart rate will continue to rise, until you get up) and waste the party, then escape.
The game will take you to a new cut sequence, and THAT will be the end.

Alright....so, I'm seriously thinking about taking the financial plunge into next-gen, but I keep hearing that the PS3 will eventually blow 360 out of the water once they get their stuff together.
Simple. When the PS3 starts blowing the 360 out of the water (if that ever happens) pick up a PS3 then. Hell it might be cheaper by then. Till then just enjoy either the 360 or the Wii that is fun right now.
Anyone get a chance to see and/or play NCAA '07 on both systems? That's the game I play 98% of the time. The only others, really, are the Hitman and SSX series, though I may buy one or two of the war games. They look pretty sweet.
I'm highly annoyed that the PS2 is getting still getting games like NCAA '08 while my old original Xbox gets bupkiss. So I'm forced to update my rosters on NCAA '05. But it's all the same. And that game only cost me $2.

I voted PS3 because IMO, it has the capability to exceed the other systems in term of overall capability, but honestly I would love to get a Wii for SSBB, and a 360(Elite) for Halo 3.
They are all great systems and each have good exclusive titles. I would love to own all 3, but I'm an unemployed college student. lol

I bought the kids a Wii last Christmas and traded an old plasma TV for a brand new PS3 about three months ago. The Wii is very fun for the first couple of months and if you have some friends over to play but it gets kind of old after awhile. The PS3 doesn't really have any decent games out on it STILL. I voted for the Wii but the Xbox 360 is probably the best system overall for anybody but casual gamers now that they upped the warranty to three years. Just my 2 cents...
Me personally, I'm a PC gamer. My kids are the video console players around my house.

XBOX 360 sells almost 5 times more than Playstation 3
What's New

FIRST ONLINE Oct 19, 2007
September proved strong for the Nintendo Wii and the XBOX 360 leaving the Playstation 3 gaming console in the dust.
The numbers for September:
XBOX 360, 527,800
Nintendo Wii, 501,000
Nintendo DS, 495,800
PlayStation Portable, 284,500
PlayStation 2, 215,000
PlayStation 3, 119,400
Game Boy Advance, 75,000
The big reason for the raise in XBOX 360 sales are mainly contributed to the release of Halo 3 which is released exclusively on the XBOX 360 console. Analysts believe that it will keep the XBOX 360 strong through the holiday season.
Still, this most be very disappointing numbers for Sony. The company has a goal of selling 11 million units world wide before March 2008 which will be hard to meet. In July they said they had sold 4.5 million world wide with only 1.7 of them in the US.
In early July they lowered the price trying to boost sales which helped but only for a few months it seems with the new numbers. Yesterday they did it again, cutting prices with $100 and introducing a new entry model priced at $399 hoping to turn the ship around.
If they succeed we don't know. No doubt this holiday season will be watched with great anticipation from a lot of companies. It could be the make it or break it season for a lot of them.

Kind of sucks. Wave bye-bye to Sony then. They bet the house on the PS3, it was pretty much a make or break deal. Looks like its going to break them.

This is for anyone who plays Metal of Honor or Call of Duty. I'm not sure if anyone on here has heard of this game but it's called Sniper Elite. It is hard to find and when you do it's usually still about $45.00 bucks new or used. But trust me it is worth every penny. I play it on Playstation 2. I don't know if it's available for any other systems. the story line goes that you are an American OSS agent in Berlin during the last days of WWII during the Battle of Berlin. You have been sent in to attempt to keep the Russian's from getting their hands on Germany's atomic secrets. You are disguised as a German Sniper. You wind up having to fight both Russians and Germans. Probably one of the coolest things in the game is when you make a really great shot the screen goes to slow motion and follows your bullet to the target. It is quite gory. When you shoot someone (I always go for the head shot ) it is very realistic. In other words their head had a big chunk blown off in a bloody mess. If you like WWII games or shooter games in general, you have to try this. Good luck finding it though.

Sony has a track record of trying as hard and long as possible to turn failures into successes. They tried hard with Betamax, they tried hard with Minidisc, and they are still trying to sell the stupid PSP.

Betamax provided a superior picture to VHS. Minidiscs are/were superior to cassettes and CDs. Doesn't change the fact that the PSP is a financial failure.

Like I said in another thread
I don't think one is any better than the other. It's all personal preference. Now, while the 360 seem to be made of plastic and cheese, I love mine. I've gotten the ring of death twice now, but at least Microsoft is trying to save face and fixing them for free.
My best friend has a Wii and I play that quite a bit, but not enough to justify buying one. Same with the PS3. 250 is 250, and 500 is 500. Not to mention I don't seem to find the time to play my 360 as much as I want.
I figure at some point I'll have a ps3 and probably even a wii (considering I own about every other console known to man). I just haven't done it yet.

I agree with ThatGuy, it's basically personal preference and there'll be fanboys of each console who'll argue to the death about which is better. The Wii is truly the only unique one cuz IMO, the games on PS3 and Xbox 360 look more or less the same. I liked the online play of the 360 but family/work/life in general limits my playing time to next to nothing so I don't even get to enjoy that advantage as much as I'd like.
My allegiance to the Xbox is pretty weak...I just like the controllers FAR better than PS3's. Even from the original PS console, the controllers were just too small and I'd constantly fight hitting wrong buttons by hitting 2 at once, etc. but when the Xbox came out, I fell in love at first play with their controller cuz it fit my hands better. The online play was awesome (back when I had time to do it!), the price, the ease of transferring files to/from my PC...those are all good points but it's more about price and the controller for me.
The ring of death argument doesn't apply to me cuz with both the original Xbox and my 360, I've never had a problem. Morrowind used to freeze every now & again on the original but I haven't had a lick of problems with the 360. *knock on wood*

See, both my xbox's have been so trouble-free and I keep hearing all these stories about people seeing this ring of death, I'm wondering if they're doing something i'm not that's causing it, y'know?

I have a 360 from original release, and it's never acted up on me. Just keep the transformer off the carpet, and you really should be fine for the most part.
Oh and Wayz, the Morrowind issue was prevalent in a lot of the original XBox games that heavily used the hard drive. It had a problem with clearing out old cache when you turned the system off so there wasn't any space to move stuff around when you started the game up. If you held down like all the buttons when you started the system up, it would clear it and make it ok to go.

If your 360 died due to a red ring of death (hardware failure), you shouldn't have had to pay any money since the warranty was good for three years from the date of purchase and the system isn't even three years old yet. What was the reason for sending it back?

Oh, no red rings mean you only have the normal one year warranty. $100 isn't that bad a deal though (all things considered even with it sucking). You get free shipping which, at the heft of the system, would be in the $10+ range normally. You get a free month of Live which is $5. And you get an additional year of warranty on your system which I can't value off the top of my head, but I'd use the value that Best Buy/GameStop give for extra protection.
