Florida State boosters calling for Bowden to retire

"Our dilemma is: How do you ask a legend to retire?" The question was posed by Bill Davis, a past president of Seminole Boosters, Inc., in an interview with The Palm Beach Post. The answer might be coming soon.

Some Florida State boosters are calling for 76-year-old football coach Bobby Bowden to retire with the Seminoles (4-3, 2-3 ACC) in last place in the conference.

Palm Beach attorney Peter Mettler, who is a former board member of Seminole Boosters, told the newspaper he was one of many boosters who have written to Florida State, calling for Bowden to retire.

"I am convinced and frankly have been for the last two seasons that coach Bowden should retire or be forced to retire," Mettler wrote to Florida State president T.K. Wetherell, the newspaper reported. "Someone has to stand up and make this difficult decision. As our president I urge you to be the leader I know you are, and do what has to be done."

Mettler, who is a Golden Chief in the booster organization ($6,000 miniumum donation) told the newspaper he sent his letter on Friday, the day before Florida State lost at home to Boston College.

Davis also told the newspaper he thinks it's time for a change at the top for the Florida State football team.

"This is a real tough business. It boils down to one of two things: It's either the horses or the jockeys. And we think we have some pretty good horses."

A Web site, "RetireCoachBowden.com" also calls for Bowden to step down.

"We think it is time for someone in the FSU Administration to tell the Emperor he has no clothes...it is time to let our Legendary Coach retire with some amount of class and dignity. Let 2006 be the swan song year so FSU can look ahead to the future with a new, younger direction, with an active Head Coach who actually coaches in the game," the introduction to the Web site reads.

However, Bowden remains upbeat.

"I know it sounds crazy, but I feel real good about our program right now," Bowden said Sunday after the Seminoles lost their second straight league home game.

"I can't worry about that," Bowden said. "Find the sun. The glass is half full, not half empty. That's always been me."

With the season's final road trip on tap Saturday at Maryland (5-2, 2-1), Florida State needs a win to avoid heading into the season's final month at .500 for the first time in Bowden's 31 years at the school.

The Seminoles' three losses to Clemson, North Carolina State and Boston College are by a total of 16 points.

"We've been in every ballgame until the last dadgum minute," Bowden said. "We're playing so many younger people, we should get better."

When, however, is the question for the defending ACC champs, who have now lost seven of their last 12 games dating back to last November.

"I don't want to present this as 'Oh boy, next year,'" Bowden said. "I'm talking about this season. [But] we've got some growing up to do."

Injuries have forced Bowden to play 17 true freshmen this year, including five who started in the loss to Boston College.

"People win with freshmen. You also get beat with freshmen," Bowden said. "But they're going to be good."

Reaffirming his positive nature, Bowden said his years in coaching have taught him good follows bad.

"We're going to come out of this doggone thing," he said.

Typical F$U fans and alumni. Ive said all along that if there are two teams in the land who need to suffer a losing season in order to show their arrogant, ignorant fans that their team is not immortal, its FSU. The other team being uga. Like him or not Bowden is a legend. He has a ton of wins, and as long as hes head coach, talent will want to play for him. Its just that simple!
If he gives in and leaves after this season, recruiting will be the lowest its been at FSU in a long time!

That along with the fact that Coker will be gone should help other schools go into Florida and take away some great talent. Plus it will give UF a huge advantage in recruiting(not like they need it though).

If Bowden is going to retire, he needs to announce it now, sort of like Alvarez did last year at Wisconsin. With FSU and Miami down, UF will no doubt sweep the recruiting sweepstakes. If FSU would go ahead and announce a young gun as the next HC, they'd get the rest of the recruits and leave Miami in shambles. Oh how sweet that'd be.

Bowden has proven that he thinks he is bigger than f$u football...5 years ago when he promoted his son as OC...after a couple of games it was apparent that Jeffy wasn't cut-out for the job...they blamed Chris Rix....yet, Bowden refused to do anything about it...even more, you'd think that Jeffy would step down on his own...to save his father the embarassment...go figure.

Bowden isn't going anywhere....for all his wins...in 25 years of f$u football...he only has 2 MNCs...and the first was disputable...besides, Joe Pa is only 4-5 games behind Bowden and in much better health. Bowden wants the "wins record" more than anything...dignity, self-respect....Bowden will retire the day after Joe Pa does...that's all that's holdin' him.

Funny thing about Bowden's win total is...30+ games that are included in his total came from his stent as a HC at Sanford College...which wasn't a Div. 1 school.

I think that's the key right there but somethings got to give. Whichever one leaves first is basically giving up that record. It's a tough call for everyone concerned. I certainly understand both coaches' position. In the end, it's going to be the guy that had the recruits to go the distance. It ain't looking too good for Bowden right now, but he should have thought twice about bringing in Jeff. I guess he felt the fans would put up with it for all he's done for the program. It's sad watching a legend go out in Holtz Style.

"Chickens coming home to roost"....f$u has committed blatant recruiting violations...shredded NCAA rules...had scandals swept under the rug...let guys play that were pending prosecution for theft, battery, etc...St. Blobby has been runnin' a dirty program in Tallecrappee for a couple of decades now...he's gotten away with it because he is a media darlin'....he gets in front of a camera and starts the whole "ol shucks....daggumit" and the media eats it up. I'll never forget when one of his top LBs was arrested for beating up his girlfriend several years ago...when asked about it during a pre-game news conference...Bowden said..."I'm praying for a misdemeanor"...that guy played that night.

Jeff Bowden should quit to save his father in this situation. See the difference it made for Phil Fulmer this year when he fired one of the coaches (offensive coordinator?) and brought back Cutcliffe? It has made all the difference in the world. If Jeff would just step down, let Bobby hire somebody else, alot of this may resolve itself and let Bobby go out on his own terms. I would imagine Jeff could probably get a head coaching job at a smaller school somewhere and start working his was back up. The whole thing is sad for Bobby, just as it was for Jo Pa when he was getting so much heat.

Just a thought.
