GAINESVILLE -- The Southeastern Conference announced today, after reviewing tape of Auburn's 27-17 win against Florida, that game officials were correct in ruling a crucial pass attempt by Florida quarterback Chris Leak a fumble.
Leak attempted to throw a pass on third-and-3 from the Auburn 6. The ball was knocked away by the Tigers' Tray Blackmon at the 16 and he returned the ball 22 yards to give Auburn the ball at its own 38 with 9 minutes, 19 seconds left in the game.
Florida coach Urban Meyer challenged the ruling on the field but it was upheld by the replay official and the Gators lost their final timeout of the game. Meyer and Leak both said after the game they thought the call would be overturned. Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley today referred all calls to the SEC.
Rogers Redding, in his first year as the SEC's coordinator of officials, today explained the call and replay official Al Ford's decision not to overturn it.
"The referee ruled a fumble on the field,'' Redding said. "If he had ruled an incomplete pass we would not have been able to review it. Once that pass is ruled incomplete when the quarterback drops back like that, if the referee rules an incomplete pass it's not subject to review because the play is over. So he ruled fumble on the field so it went to replay with the coach's challenge.''
