An article I wrote recently, in response to so much over-hype for Alabama.

On paper Alabama has a great team.... unfortunately, this game is played on a court.

Expectations are definitely high, but they've gotta go thru Florida, Kentucky and LSU before I believe Alabama will win more that a couple of NCAA tournament games.

What did Bama do last year? We went 1-1 with the SEC Regular Season Champs LSU. We beat SEC tourney and National Champions Florida (we never trailed in the game, btw). We beat Kentucky at Kentucky. All this after losing our senior leader, and other circumstances that left us with what 8 scholarship players? (BTW, you make it sound like UCLA dominated us in that game when the only won by 3.)

And you also lost to some ugly teams. Sure, you beat some impressive ones - but those bad losses were still there. Which makes your season "decent" to MAYBE "pretty good" - nothing to warrant a Top 10 pre-season ranking.

We had a decent season in 2003 but still went farther in the tourney than any other Bama team.

Who says Bama will be top ten when the "actual" polls come out?
About the Final Four prediction: Who had George Mason making it last year?
Hell, how many people had even heard of George Mason?

Enough people since it's the largest school in the state.

BTW, National Champion Florida lost to South Carloina twice and surrived a buzzer beater the third time. No disrespect to USC, but they aren't exactly a basketball powerhose lately.

On a national scale as a basketball school. I believe they had zero tourney wins till 2006 right?

They aren't a powerhouse but they are very solid. Back to back NIT championships isn't something to scoff at. There are a lot of teams in the NIT that deserve to be in the NCAA but get burned by gooby RPIs, small conference champions, back door politics, etc.

Once again...not to disrespect USC...

I think Bama is going to be very, very good. I mean Gee, Hendrix and Davidson are amongst the best players in the SEC at their respective positions. And Ronald Steele, don't even get me started on him. He's hands-down the best PG in the league, and that's saying something. One of, if not the, best in the nation, too. Bama's class is kinda under the radar, but I think it's solid and Gottfried fit his needs. I especially hope Mykal Riley does well. He's from my hometown and played at my high school. I'm a sports writer down here and talk to his former coach all the time and from what I've heard, Bama's looking real good right now, at least Mykal thinks so.

I think a big reason the Tide only won 18 games last year was the fact that Chuck D went down early in the year and that screwed with the chemistry. Once they found that, they were pretty damn good save a letdown to MSU late in the year. Alabama was also very, very close to knocking off UCLA, the team that lost to Florida in the title game, in the 2nd round, too.

I expect some good things from the Tide this year and right now, if I were predicting the order of finish, I'd put Bama in the top slot in the West. They need to find some more depth than they had last year, but I feel like they've done that with their incoming guys.

Basically, anytime you have two guys like Steele and Davidson - a great inside-outside combo - you're going to be a good basketball team. Final Four may (stress that, please) be too much this early, but Western Division Championship certainly isn't.

That's my two cents on Bama. Keep in mind though I'm a closet Alabama hoops fan. I did a series of stories on Riley and where he was going, etc... When he signed with Alabama, I had the pleasure of talking to Coach Gottfried for about 45 minutes. He's a great guy and I wish the Tide the best of luck (minus two games) in 2006-2007.

Man that's a tough article considering we are talking preseason rankings. I'm going to wait until January when the Tide has come back from trips to South Bend, Raleigh and played Oklahoma at home until I break out the overrated smack.

Bigger then VA Tech?

I think not.

I always figured UVA and Tech were the biggest schools in VA.

Gee you beat me to it. That is exactly what I was going to use to defeat your argument above. You're right we are no powerhouse. It is consistency that will take you over the hump. We also played LSU pretty tight. The problem was we lost to UGA, Ole Miss, Clemson, etc. The first step to greatness is beating everyone you are supposed to beat.

Alabama will be good. Not as great as some seem to believe. But great. Definitely a Big Dance team. Their fate rests more or less on how Big Baby and Brady deal w/losing Tyrus Thomas, and having no incoming recruits to boot. How LSU can be ranked so high after LOSING people is beyond me. Bama matches up well w/them, and I see the 2 splitting their series this year.
Will Bama beat Florida this year? No.
Will Bama beat Kentucky this year? No.
Will Bama beat Tennessee this year? Absolutely
Will Bama beat LSU? Once
Arkansas and perhaps....oh, lets say one or two non-cons will take 'em down. Anyway, Bama will be good. But not top 10 good. Certainly top 20 though.

It's the biggest enrollment wise. It's basically a commuter school for the DC/MD/NOVA area.

<--- watches the team before he passes judgement on teams. I don't care who says what until I see them play myself.
