I watched the FSU versus NC St. game last night.

I was trying to decide if the game had passed Bobby by or is it coordinator problems as many fans think. After thinking about it for a while. I thought FSU was by far the more talented team on the field last night.

My conclusion was that the conference (ACC) with the new addtions and the other existing teams improving their football programs have just caught up. In the early days, FSU just use to out talent the other ACC teams. Not that FSU didn't have great teams in the past. I do think it is somewhat easier to get your team up for a major bowl game then 3-4 times during the regular season as we have to.

My take is that league parity has now gotten to Bobby and FSU. Another example of this would be Miami. They moved out of the Big East and look to be troubled. Both are good teams but not dominant like they use to be.

I was wondering what some of you think?

Dave -
I agree with everything you typed. However, I also think it may be time for Diddy to retire. Funny thing about last night. The talking heads seemed to be making excuses for F$U, noting how tough it is to play in a volatile setting on Thursday night, against a good coach. Didn't hear that after our game against the Cocks. Ah well, I know I'm just another AU apologist...

Excited about tomorrow's games. I hear Tubs really got fired up in a team meeting the other day. Basically told guys it's time to show whether we are for real or not!

Man! What a quandary the FSU AD must be in. If I am not mistaken he is an Alabama grad who must eventually decide what to do. I think his decision makes him a non-winner no matter.

It looks to me that Bobby will never surrender the ship until Joe Pa does. When Bobby does step down it will surely end his sons job at FSU and I would be willing to bet that the DC will not stay either.

This should make Florida recruiting quite interesting the next couple of years. Bobby's age will be used against him and Coker may not be around after this year. That leaves us just needing a paid sniper in Gainsville to help the rest of us.

Did anybody catch the post-game interview with Amato?

What a nutt.

The thing is; everyone was saying this last season and who ended up winning the conference again. The fact is FSU has never been the same since Richt left.

If you think he is a nut (I agree) what do you think of Lou on the halftime reports.

My belief is that not enough oxygen is getting to his brain. I often wonder how Mark May keeps from busting out laughing.

Did you see the quote earlier in the year from Joe Pa saying he checks the obits ever day to see if Bobby is still kicking? Classic!

I think Richt's leaving was a factor but like in my earlier post. I think the rest of the conference has moved up and FSU hasn't or couldn't. I tried to think back to a time when I thought FSU staff actually out coached someone. Maybe it's my age, but I couldn't point you to one game where I thought they out schemed anyone.

FSU won't win the conference this year, because they already have 2 losses in thier division of the ACC.

Here is FSU record since the year 2000.

2000 11 2 0 Orange: Lost to Oklahoma, 13-2
2001 8 4 0 Gator: Beat Virginia Tech, 30-17
2002 9 5 0 Sugar: Lost to Georgia, 26-13
2003 10 3 0 Orange: Lost to Miami, 16-14
2004 8 3 0 Gator: Beat West Virginia, 30-18
2005 8 5 0 Orange: Lost to Penn State, 26-23

and it looks like another 8-5 or 9-4 type year. Which isn't bad by the way... But it will not play well with the faithful.

Some interesting stats:

Florida State lost a total of 13 games between 1990-1999.
Florida State has lost a total of 24 games between 2000-2006.

I think , in large part, you're dead on with the whole Conference improvement thing. Personnally, I don't really think Bowden has lost "it". The teams he's playing are better and they are rivals. Not only have they improved, but they are playing him (FSU) year in - year out. THAT is huge against a good program.
Teams/coaches have built up experience against certain programs.

NC ST , as well as the other ACC teams, have gotten over the awe of FSU ( and MIAMI, for that matter), and now look at them as another really tough game to play. They have last year's game to analyze, the year's before and numerous common opponents. That familiarity, in itself, eliminates a lot of jitters.

I'm tickled to death that MIA n FSU are in a real conf and having to fight against familiar foes on a regular basis - Welcome to our world!

As far as Bowden outcoaching others, he's probably done more than his share. IMO, the truly best coaching jobs are when your team "appears" to just have better all around players and dominate the game.
Unfortunately, we as fans, look for the winners of nail-biters, where somebody resorted to a trick play or gamble to say " Oh, Whatta great coaching job"

Jay,
My favorite statement last night was from Lou. He wanted to applaud the Pac 10 for scheduling another league game when the schedule went to 12 games.

Dear Lou,
They scheduled that because not all the Pac 10 teams play each other every year and they don't have a conference championship game. So, it was possbile for the number one team in the Pac 10 not to play the number two team from season to season.

My impressions:
1) I'm not sure that Florida State had the most talented team by far that some of you think. NC State has had talent for years and just haven't been able to achieve with it. I think they're by far more talented overall now than they ever were when Phillip Rivers was there.
They are in a similar situation as USC this year. The offense was absolutely horrible at first, but the right QB is now in there. I'm not sure he's more talented, but he makes the big throws and the team responds to him.
2) I'm not convinced that it's just FSU and Miami having to play in a "tough" conference. FSU struggled with Troy and Miami barely beat Houston. They both don't look very good to me at the moment.
3) As for the "awe" thing with FSU, NC State has never had it...at least since Amato has been there. He knew it was a mind game and apparently convinces his players of such. He's now 4-3 vs. Pops Bowden.
4) As for Amato being a nut, I personally thought the "What critics?" comment was one of the single most hilarious things I've ever heard a coach say. He left the commentator speechless for crying out loud.

Yeah, they won the conference but they also had 5 losses...something that an SEC Champ. has never had.

I missed it. Did catch him pickin' the Hawgs over AU. What a surprise coming from ole Lou.

I read where Holtz also announced that Russell will be the starting qb for lswho vs. the gators! Now that's cutting edge reporting right there! Holtzheimers is alive and well.
