I still remember as a child watching GT's mascot Buzz making fun of our Majorettes during a halftime performance, then BAM, Smokey comes out of no where with a giant Fly Swatter. I'm sure it was all pre-arranged, as buzz was seen a few times walking around with a dog collar. But to a 6 yr old, it was the high point of the game! :D

I take it that you attend NATS. How else could someone be a fan of two different schools like that. I grew up in a NATS family. Four generations worth of Tech graduates. I couldn't care less about them. My sister and I were the black sheep of the family or rather "the red and black sheep" of the family.

Half our games are against tigers and bulldogs. I really like and I have said this before on this site that being original is great when it comes to mascots. Gamecocks, Razorbacks, Gators three to name quick. Wish we could come up with something since Ole Miss is the only D1 school with no mascot!

No. That was a story about a fine man that wouldn't miss a game period. He loved Ole Miss. The mascot was never modelled after him. It was a choice of two steriod Col Rebs. Either not cool choices. at all. no way.


Someone in an article called him a mascot one time and I felt that wrong. He was a great fan of the school.

Well, when ppl think of Rebels, they think of ppl trying to start trouble or someone from the streets. Memphis isn't too far from Oxford, and there are a lot of rappers there that could be also considered Rebels.

My point is that maybe you should have folks like Three 6 Mafia as the sort of Mascot you guys need. These "New" Rebels would be more like a 3-set of mascots, pimped out and iced out too.

Black ppl thought Col. Reb looked too much like a rich white Slaveowner. And, when most of the football and basketball teams are made up of Black students, you don't want them to feel like they're representing a slaveowner;

There still exists a wealth gap between Blacks and Whites in Mississippi, and culture gap as well. In time future generations will ease the current problems of the day, but I think right now it's time to go forward and begin the process of cleansing ourselves of the sins of our fathers and grandfathers.

I have always hated the common and unimaginable names.

"Cocky" has won that capital one thing like 2 out of 3 years and while I am not crazy about him in particular, I guess the kids like him and he certainly is unique to say the least.

There's a small high school in north central Arkansas that has basketball only, too small for football. The name of the town is Deer. And believe it or not, it's mascot's name is, the Antlers. Who would have thought, The Deer Antlers. Another classic high school mascot is a small town south of Fayettville called Winslow, it's mascot, the Squirrels. I swear to god. I always wanted to go to one of there pep rallys. You got to believe you would hear....."Who are the Squirrels, We are the Squirrels, What kinda Squirrels, Nut eating Squirrels!!!!!!!!"...Well eat those nuts Squirrels, eat.

I love Big Al, and the elephant on the Jumbotron is really cool. That being said, my high school was the only school in Alabama to be called the Huskies. That was cool, and we even had a little husky on the sidelines at games.

Why is it that if you are a white Mississippian you need to be cleansing yourself of your fathers and grandfathers? Mine never were a part of what the rest of the nation thinks with their prejudice. Nor am I! I was raised to treat others as I would have them treat me. PERIOD

Getting back to the mascot, which col reb can't be a part of, there are few left to be original. As I said earlier, origianal is the best but after all these years origianal means choosing maybe a skunk which ain't cool. Maybe with the song "Forward Rebels" a pointer would be an idea? Still like that with the quail hunting. The best hunting. imo. I don't really have an answer to it. Nothing traditionalist would like and maybe just another dog to some. It just feels empty without a mascot being the only d1 school without one.
