I was wondering what all of you thought about Brent Schaffer. I have my mixed opinions. He is a great athlete with great mobility and a heck of an arm. But he cant hit an open reciever for anything. He cannot throw a touch pass. He throws a bullet on every pass and alot of time that isn't necessary. I understand that the recievers are dropping alot of balls too but there are alot of passes that aren't hitting them in the hands.
Recruit some top-tier OL and receivers and then Schaeffer will have all the tools needed. He can't do it all by himself.
Overall, I think Schaeffer is doing a decent job so far.

It just hard to overlook the fact that he was giving the starting job before he was ever enrolled

Thats the only thing I don't like. How can you give him the starting job before he is even on campus? GEEZ! And as for as the recievers...These guys are supposed to be good. Maybe they are still just too young. I hate that excuse though.

Fair comments from an MSU fan.......
I think it really hurt Brent to come to this Ole Miss team late. His timing could be and probably is suffering from it.
I DO think BS has the tools to play in the SEC , mobile and has a great arm. Yes he does need some help around him , but given some more time he has a chance to improve his play by a lot.
I expect him to show some improvement this year and next year he could be really good.
No doubt for me , He was a good pickup for Ole Miss.

It's not an excuse, it's a fact. The WRs are young. You can tell because they don't run crisp routes and when Schaeffer had to bail out of the pocket, they don't run scramble drills like they are supposed to.
Also, the moment Schaeffer put his ink on the LOI, he was the starter. Was it wise for Orgeron to pronounce it to the world? Doesn't really matter. Anyone with half a brain knew he was the starter. His competition is a walk-on who bounched from Delta State to Hinds CC and finally to Ole Miss. Adams is a nice guy, but still a walk-on Name a coach in the SEC would start a Jr. walk-on over Schaeffer's credentials. Not many.
That being said, the OL doesn't like him very much. He reportedly showed up for school out of shape and with less of a grasp on the playbook then expected.

He's obviously really comfortable throwing to A.J. Jackson who committed to the Rebels from CoS earlier last week. Their chemistry and the fact that Jackson is 6'6" should help tremendously.

The kid has talent, that's for sure. He is a superior athlete that is trying to shoulder the load. That may work in some mid-major conference, but not in the SEC. As his help on the offense gets more experience and maturity, you'll see his numbers increase accordingly.

IMHO: He should consider another position(if) he want so advance to the NFL.
As of now BS is at a disadvantage due to lack of reps with his team, little time to establish himself as a leader at the last minute, etc.. All of those things are working against him, but the guy is a player with skills, if not he would not be back in the SEC nor would Tennessee have given him a look the first time around. It will take time for the Ole Miss team to pull everything together. I for one think they have made strides in Oxford and truly upgraded their talent. BS will do a fine job next year and may even find his way before in the end of this season. I would classify BS and Ole Miss in the dangerous category as of now maybe dangerous for another team or themselves.

BS has the talent to play in the SEC. This is all about Coach "O". I said preseason, either BS would lack the knowledge/reps to be successful or Ole Miss' offense was waaaay too simple. He should have been used in the same fashion that Tebow's being used this year or BS was used at TN. Put him in certain situations that he's comfortable with and bring him along as the season progresses.
Also, he needs off-field direction and guidance ( he ain't self-motivated until he's in a game, and then its too late).
BS will be as good or as bad as Coach "O" makes him and so far I give the coach a C-.

Just ask Coach O himself, "Ooohhheeyooo Oheeyyyoooohhhoooo Ohheyoooeyoo eyyooo, Brent Schaffow". Sorry, couldn't resist.

Maybe it's just me but Brent is not currently working in an offensive scheme that utilizes what I think are his talents.
He looks better to me on the move as compared to being pocket passer. They need to allow him to pass more on first down and to do so short.
I think he is a better player then this offensive allows him to be...

He needs to realize that his running around has actually hurt the team (taking them out of field goal position) several times. He needs patience.
I question him as a competitor. He actually went to three different high schools because he was not named starting QB at either of the first two. Sure enough, he was at Tennessee for one year, got pushed aside to some degree and got in trouble, and the next year he is at JC. And going to Ole Miss, probably because he was named starter going in, is the same behavior.

I think he's got plenty of talent. I think the offense lacks chemistry as a whole, and the receivers lack either experience or discipline or both. I thought BJGE would be having a bigger year (thought he is having a decent year), and that he'd be able to take some heat off of the QB spot. I guess UM doesn't quite have the OL to knock people off the ball and run at will. If your guys don't get demoralized, they'll start to jell soon and be a better unit. Coach O had better get it rolling by the Egg bowl, at the very least. If UM loses that game this year, I'd think the Ole Miss faithful would run him right out of town.
As to BS's character.....if he's not being a team guy, and that's part of the problem or THE problem, then the coaches should have already dealt with that and benched him. If a guy's not playing FOR the team, he shouldn't be ON it. And like someone else mentioned, if the O-line doesn't like him, he's meat! HE ought to be buying the hosses a steak dinner every now and then!!

i remember a kid by the name of spurlock that was a great athlete, had a helluva arm, but threw the ball 100mph every time he threw a pass. by your description, the only difference is one is right handed and the other is left handed.
imo, it is more than obvious schaeffer isnt comfortable with the playbook. that said, who would be in 2 weeks of practice. i would like to see adams get a chance...he has looked better than schaeffer so far in the playing time he has been given.

I don't like him because he seems self centered and big headed, he does not have any trust in his O line at all, everytime he spikes the ball he rolls out before even looking down field. Seems to me he is just playing for himself and trying to make a name for himself for the NFL!!! Put Adams in, even if he sucks to, at least he will believe in TEAMWORK!!!

I am convinced that Orgeron is a coach in the mold of R. Zook & Ray Goff.
Great recruiter who really believes in what he's doing...the only problem is he doesn't even know what he is doing.
BS may or may not be the problem. The blame should be placed more on Orgeron for some bonehead coaching decisions (i.e. like the decision to start BS simply to attract him to Ole Miss). Orgeron is still not ready to be an HC.
