LSU will get $22 million as part of $145 million in federal homeland security appropriations for the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium, U.S. Rep. Richard Baker's office announced this morning. LSU, New Mexico Tech, Texas A&M and DOE's Nevada Test Site make up the consortium, which is preparing first responders to deal with catastrophes caused by attacks on U.S. soil with weapons of mass destruction. The goal is to train more than 2 million first responders. Baker, who pushed for the funding for LSU, says the award is proof of the university's "continuing excellence as a leader in this field."
