I expected empty seats Saturday. I expected a lot of silver in the upper decks. But when I looked at the student section it made me wonder about the state of our university pride. I sat in that student section for 5 years before I started at USC with my brother and 10 more after a graduated. I swelled with pride when Hank Campbell stuffed the 2 point conversion. Every hair stood up on my arms when Brad Edwards brought the interception back against Clemson. I was there when Robert Brooks made a move that would have made Reggie Bush take notice between 2 Georgia defenders and then racing to the endzone. And Raynard's knee did not touch. But I also sat there when Bob Fulton said you could cut loose with an automatic weapon in here and not draw blood when Florida State drubbed my 7-1 Gamecocks 59-0
But I was not alone in the student section. I was there when my 4-1 Gamecocks dropped 1 to the Citadel. And I was there when a long haired freshman from Pennsylvania took over the reins of my 0-5 Gamecocks and won 5 of the next six. And yes I was there for 1-21. And through it all I was not alone. The student section was always crowded. Always loud. Always swelling with Gamecock pride. Last Saturday I looked to the North Stands and almost cried with the empty seats I saw in the 1st and 2nd quarter. I thought surely they've just tailgated too long, they will show. But the seats never filled. And after halftime, they got emptier. I challenge the students and all the fans of this university, if you want to be a winner act like a winner. Show up and support our Gamecocks. Be loud and Be proud, but most of all be present. When I was in school professors would not have even expected anyone to show up Friday. GO COCKS!!!!!

GAAAAAAAME!!!!!!!

spurrier and the other coaches want carolina fans to do a better job of being quiet when we have the ball...spurrier just now asked for that on his radio show....

COCKSSSSSSSS!!!!

Looks like you had as much fun with that as a drunk girl did at a superregional game I went to a few years back.

On another note, if anyone doesn't like to go to games anymore or doesn't want to sit until the end, then give your tickets to this needy cock. I used to go to games with my Aunt and Uncle, and they NEVER left early.....no matter the score. I vividly remember the 59-0 that roosterbooster spoke of. There to the last minute. The one year we had the "Black Out" against Florida and Spurrier handed us our @$$e$, I was there until the bitter end. I don't claim to be saying nice things at the end of the game, but if I bother to drive an hour to Columbia and deal with the traffic, I DON'T LEAVE EARLY!!!

Sort of reminds me of the basketball games, where the rich fuddy duddies want to sit courtside and be "seen." We should have the student surrounding the court and make it intimidating like Cameron. Guess that shows where most of the money's true loyalty lies.....their image.

I of course realize that the vast majority of students leaving early are simply going to go home and party more or watch another game, but for some of us leaving is simply the smart thing to do. grad students, professional students, and any undergrads with demanding schedules/assignments work extra hard to make sure they can go to the games. if the game is a blowout or just not that interesting the smart thing to do is leave and go get more work done.

the only reason i bother bringing this up is because the last thing i need is to have it become more common for people to start screaming at people leaving early and telling us how we're not real fans.

if the auburn game turns into a blowout (please god no) i'll probably be leaving at the end of the 3rd so i can get a little studying in. and yes unfortunately that goes for saturday games too....i have no life, hehe.

I as well. An 8 in the morning calculus class doesn't sound to friendly when I'm just now getting in around 12 or 1.

Never ever leave early. It's embarrassing to see empty seats. We've been fooling ourselves for a long time by calling ourselves the best fans in America. That's a huge myth.

YOU'RE NOT REAL FANS!!!!!!!!!

hehe, well alrighty then. you've just lost any chance of a discount if you ever come to my practice!

[disclaimer: that was just a joke. no one gets a discount!
  ]

in all seriousness though...football ain't life folks. i love the game, and i truly love the Gamecocks, but i have my priorities in order and sadly neither football nor athletics can ever be in my top 2. granted this is a fairly recent development, but getting older sucks, hehe.

ii understand the point everyone is trying to make because it definitely does look bad to have the student section empty and people filing out in the 3rd, but in my personal situation it is what it is....i can't worry about the other people leaving.

i suppose i might as well also throw in the little tidbit that i have yet to leave a game early cause i either don't get a ticket if i know i'll be too busy or i know i wouldn't go home to do work anyway. that will be different on thursday IF auburn whoops up on us tomorrow, however. i can only hope and pray that is enough to appease you, booster, and maybe i can have my fan card back now

My opinion is that if the team on the field didn't show up and is playing like a bunch of losers, then why should I have to sit there and watch the whole game???? That goes for any team in any sport. If they are trying hard and just aren't as good as the other team that is one thing, but if they don't put in any real effort on the field, I don't understand why it is my responsiblity as a "real fan" to stay and watch that crap. Now Spurrier seems to be trying to instill the philosophy that you play hard all the time or you don't play at all, but I have seen some Carolina teams in the past that looked like they didn't give a s**t about what was going on on the field. If they seem like they've got better things to do than play football, then I've got better things to do than watch another team "practice" on us.

Because your pride should be in your University and not only in a bunch of 18-22 year old kids on the field at the time. How the heck do you think it will make the future of our program look if Thursday night in the 4th quarter ESPN is talking about 40000 empty seats at Billy Brice. Steve Spurrier has us in the homes of some impressive prospects. He needs every advantage he can get to make them Gamecocks.

if i have tickets to the game i am there and stay to the very end. it is a two and half hour drive for me so im not wasting all my gas and time just to leave the game early. im going to soak in every minute of being in that stadium.

I'm going to have to fall on the "dark side" of this thread. I think we sit through mediocre football seasons over and over because we do show up no matter what they put on the field. If the USC family started having trouble selling tickets maybe they'd work even harder to put a more competitive program together. I felt ripped off when I sat and watched Alabama run for 10 yards a carry last year, and I'll feel just as ripped off if we have a repeat of the joke that was last year's game on the Plains.

here is an interesting quote from Kenny Mckinley.
McKinley knows people are picking USC to beat the Tigers. Frankly, after the way the Gamecocks played in their first three games, who can blame them? McKinley doesn't.

"The way we played in the first three games, if I was a fan, I wouldn't give us a chance either," McKinley said. "But I know in-house, the coaches, my teammates, we are all pulling for each other. If we know we can do it, that is the way it is going to get done. The fans, that is their decision. But, real Gamecock (fans) will stick with us."
