Sitting in the stands with his wife Saturday night, Curtis Leak said he felt a little stunned and a little hurt when the fans at Florida Field booed his son.

“We heard it," Leak said. “People are saying the fans were booing the decision of the coach (Urban Meyer), but I’m not sure I believe that. Last season, when Chris (Leak) came in and took over for (backup quarterback) Josh Portis at the end of a drive, nobody would boo that decision.

“Either way, booing people is wrong. I think the majority of fans there really like Chris. When they announce the lineup before games, he always gets one of the loudest cheers. It’s a shame that some fans did what they did the other night. It really bothered the players."

Loud booing erupted early in the fourth quarter when Leak was sent onto the field to take over for true freshman quarterback Tim Tebow, who had just run six yards for a first down on the Kentucky 15-yard line. Leak finished the drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Cornelius Ingram.

In UF’s previous offensive possession, Tebow had started the drive and was relieved by Leak after Tebow had three consecutive rushes totaling 62 yards.

Chris Leak said he did not hear the boos.

“People have come to me and asked me some questions about it," Leak said Monday. “My main focus (is on the game). I’ve got headsets on, I’m on the sideline, I’m talking to the coaches about play calling, so I really don’t notice it.

“My main focus is on communication and my teammates and making sure we get all the play calls in right and all that stuff. I totally missed that, I guess."

Meyer said he thought the fans were booing him.

“My wife said, 'Hey, don’t worry about them booing Chris, they’re booing you,’ " Meyer said. “I can deal with that. They should boo; we didn’t score a touchdown. Chris is better than that. We’re better than that."

Some players said they didn’t hear the booing. Others said they heard it but were not disturbed by it.

“Not at all," junior defensive end Jarvis Moss said. “That’s for the fans and stuff like that. We know who our quarterback is and we’re only going to go as far as he goes, so we have full confidence in our quarterback."

Senior wide receiver Jemalle Cornelius said the fans have the right to boo if they want to.

“Of course we heard it," Cornelius said. “That’s the fans. They’re entitled to do whatever they feel like. It ain’t that big of a deal. Tebow drove us and I guess they wanted to see him run the ball more. That’s up to the coaches. The fans can do whatever they feel like doing once they’re in the stadium."

Many of the fans tried to drown out the boos with cheers. When Leak jogged the length of the field after doing a television interview after the game, he was cheered wildly by the several thousands fans remaining in the stadium. Leak acknowledged the fans by raising his helmet in the air.

Curtis Leak said it’s time for the booing to stop and for Florida fans to unite behind all the players and coaches heading into Saturday’s game against Alabama.

“The fans have to stop all this stuff and be the 12th man," Curtis Leak said. “Any time you boo your own team, it’s not good for the team, it’s not good for fan unity. (The fans) really need to come together like the Alabama fans did last year (in Tuscaloosa) and like the Tennessee fans did (two weeks ago in Knoxville).

“Those fans were unified regardless of what calls the coaches made or who was playing. If Florida fans unite and become that 12th man, we can get The Swamp back to being what it used to be."

Your title is misleading....Leak wasn't "booed"...the decision to take Tebow out was "booed"...it had nothing to do with Leak. Just another sportswriter trying to "fabricate" contraversy. Is it just a coincidence that this was posted by a bammer?

i firmly believe they werent booing leak....did you hear the enoumous cheer for him when he threw the td pass after the boo?? that said, booing anybody at their home field is bush league at best. it pissed me off that 2000 people are dumb enough that they cant see the forrest b/c of the trees.

btw, did you notice the contingent of cheers overpowering the boos as soon as they started??

I just think they're pissed cause we don't have to worry about booing our players or *cough* kickers *cough* or coaching decisions. About the only thing we have had to boo about all year is Tebow not finishing a drive. Pretty sad, really...

Who are you trying to convince me or you?

I believe the man that Florida owes an apology to is named Curtis Leak.

so you think the universtiy of florida should issue an apology to someone b/c their son was booed??? lmao, you are grasping for straws now.

remember, fans pay money for their tickets. when this monetary exchange is completed, the fan has a right to cheer or not cheer for whomever they choose as long as it is done within the realm of the law. are some of these fans dumb?? yeah. should he of been booed?? no. does uf owe curtis leak an apology?? lmao.

should curtis write a letter of thanks to uf every time the fans cheer leak?? 2 way street.

Fans boo players and they boo even sons of famous players, as Archie Manning would tell you. I think the majority of Florida fans have this well in perspective. They have an exceptional quarterback in Leak and they know it.

Excellent post...and you are right....it's kinda funny how this all has been blown out of proportion...

I wasn't there...a friend of mine who was said...a few fans booed as Tebow ran to the sideline....when Leak came onto the field...the fans began cheering...the cheers drowned out the boos and that was the end of it....until now...

I like Chris Leak. I think Curtis Leak is a dip@#$ who is going to
wind up having every fan hating Chris for no reason. What is the
man's problem? His son is grown and seems to have a lot of class.
Is the old man jealous? Why the constant media circus with this
joker?

This is almost as bad as the Kenny/David Sr. escapade with USC. Both Curtis and David Sr. need to shut the hell up.

If the fans did in fact, boo Chris, then they need to shut the hell up as well.

There are a couple of reasons that I find it interesting when fans choose a favorite second team player and then booing the starter.

1 - It can have a huge psychological impact on the player being booed. Your own fans are turning on you and especially when it's the QB. Fortunately, Leak has had an outstanding year. Alabama has a similar situation brewing with Ken Darby and Jimmy Johns. And I will regret the day that Darby gets booed.

2 - QB controversies always get way too much press and are easily overblown. People may be a little to eager to play the race card in Leak vs Tebow. I will regret the day that Paul Finebaum makes this an issue on his show.

Yeah, I guess class isn't inherited, nor is it something you have
to be taught at home! Otherwise Chris Leak wouldn't be the guy
he is.
